Microsoft releases a free eBook that provides an introduction to Internet security and covers various topics, including how to identify and deal with scams, phishing attempts, and browser BHO's / malware.

Microsoft has released a free — and lengthy! — e-book covering a wide range of security topics. Although intended for teenagers, the book offers a solid enough look at using the internet safely, and it’s suitable for anyone who needs a primer on internet security.

Alt text

It’s difficult to write books for teenagers that don’t fall into the “trying too hard to be cool” trap, but Microsoft has done an admirable job. The text is a comprehensive guide for teenagers (and new computer users) that covers everything from how to spot phishing tactics to setting up your browser to protect against browser-based exploits to dealing with cyberstalking and bullying. It also provides interesting history and real-world examples of the harm that can come from security vulnerabilities.

I've had a skim through the chapters. It appears to contain some useful information not just for teens (IMHO, the recommended readers age is about 14+).

  • Show me a teenager that will read a book by choice ? ebook even

  • not a bad read, read through a chapter. thanks for the post

  • This is great, I might show the school I work at as it looks like it teaches more then their cyber safety units.

  • It seems appealing with some colour here and there, not an eye-sore like some ebooks. Probably worth a read thanks :)

  • Downloading it now!

    • Wow, downloading from MS is fast! ( 5 sec?)

      • holy crap! that was really fast, less than a second for me :/

      • Thank the Akamai CDN.

        • 20 seconds for me.. sad face.

Microsoft Security Essentials is arguably the best free anti-virus security going around. Shows how much you know.

oh comeon, lets not start flaming. Think of how many zero day vulnerabilities microsoft has produced.

      • Yea, its a really light weight and good antivirus for windows 7, taking it has inbuilt firewall.
Though I am using the free Norton 360 internet security, which is also surprisingly fast as per the previous versions.

  • i particularly love this line: "Warning! Uneducated programmers + programming mistakes = security holes!" this is a gripping read :D
