  • Anybody tried the cheaper overseas version like this one? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Chromecast-2-Digital-HDMI-Media-V…

Most of those say 'For Google Chromecast 2' or some ambigious wording. That particular one doesn't but for that price you know it's no good, confirmed in feedback:

its not chromecast, is miracast g***o
Chromecast 2 Digital HDMI Media Video Streamer 2017 2nd Generation For Google (#401325279622) AU $19.99

      • Yeah, I thought so. Just wondering whether it works just as well as they're half the price.

i just bought one of those as it was advertised as a chromecast 2, as i paid $27 for it.
once received, it was a miracast. tried it out and it drops out every often. i wont' recommend it.
i'm trying to get my refund now.

        • @silverhawks:

Ok, cheers for that! I'll get the original one, then :).

I am still using Chromecast 1, working fine. Any reason to upgrade to 2?

    • +1

I don't think so. I'm no expert but Chromecast 2 doesn't have any drastic new features, just small connectivity improvements and design change. Get a Chromecast 2 if you're looking for a Chromecast but not worth the $ to upgrade if you already have Chromecast 1 and it works fine. Still the same video resolution. Unless you have connection issues with Chromecast 1 then upgrade may be a good idea then.

You could get a Chromecast Ultra or something different down the line with 4K compatibility, or an Android TV box seem even more popular - so you'll get some benefits/new features in upgrading.

      • I agree. I bought the Chromecast 2 for fast streaming but there was virtually no difference.

    • +1

I reckon it runs better in chromecast 2. I notice the slower connection in chromecast 1.

    • I have both on different TVs - there is no difference at all that I can see and speed was never a problem on my original chromecast. They look different and I like the 1 as it's smaller but the 2 hangs down so I have to attach it to the back of the TV so I can't see it.

    • The Chromecast 2 have 5GHz Wifi, which helps you stream high bitrate content especially if you're suffering from congestion or interference in your 2.4GHz Wifi band.

      • True, the Chromecast one also had 2gb ram whereas the two only has 512mb, so it can't build as big a buffer.

  • I'm looking to buy one of these, but what's stopping someone from jumping towards the Chromecast Ultra which cost twice as much aside from the price?

    • The main advantages of the Chromecast Ultra over the Chromecast 2 is that it supports 4K streaming and has a wired ethernet port. If you want a Chromecast but don't have a 4K TV or 4K streaming/HDR isn't important to you (some may like to future proof), then you I'd say just get a Chromecast 2 for $40 or so less.

    • If you're going to get the HD version, just get the mi box 3 instead. Way more powerful and useful, includes chromecast capable and the same price.

      • Where should I buy it from? Any link?

        • They come up on OzBargain fairly regularly. If you do a search on here something will come up.

  • What ia the difference with wd tv live?

  • +1

Chromecast 2 supports faster wifi ac from memory so you would have less of a bottleneck if you are on fibre or faster connections

  • chromecast 1 is able to cache more of the movie compared to chromecast 2, however has s slower theoretical wifi throughput. i got both and only notice slightly fast loading times when you first send an app to it.

  • Android TV devices also work as a chromecast, you can get the Xiaomi Mi Box 3 which is 4k for under $80 on a good day.

    • Heard good and bad things about this though.

    • Does any "octacore Android media player" available on eBay count as an Android TV device, or is that a separate thing?

  • Thanks OP ordered C2

  • +2

Bought one and Im not impressed as its a dumbass device and YES i know how to use it.

I think an android smart tv or a intel box is way more use as these are smart, use a remote & otherwise way more useful.

Its worth, $10 max. Anything more Id rather get a smart box…

    • +1

Depends on your usage. If you're just playing video files then a cheap android box. But if you want to send your non-smart tv YouTube videos or stream from plex cheaply then this is a good buy. You probably should have done a bit more research before your purchase.

  • Anyone tried streaming an emulator from their phone to the tv using one of these?

I can only find info regarding the first Chromecast, which most people say results in too much lag.

Any first hand experience would be appreciated.
