I think they are still banned in the EU…I stand corrected. I read a list that said updated 2017…but it was lifted in 2009 as stated.
Actually flew them back from Bali on the way back from Europe after KLM and they were HEAPS better. The aircraft was modern, the service and food great, and the leg room was more generous than on KLM. They're no longer banned from Europe and although the price is pretty standard, I would say that they have the best economy leg room, when compared to Virgin/Jetstar short haul international
Much better than Qantas in my opinion, aside from overall safety record
Modern interior, built-in entertainment unit, generous leg room, 30kg baggage allowance, on-time schedule, great food and service.has multiple question marks on safety (still banned in EU) yet demands the price of a mid-tier airline? The ban was lifted in 2009: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/16/business/global/16air.html. And they actually won a couple of awards including best economy class in 2016.
I fly Garuda every month on MEL DPS/CGK. Honestly, holding on to old 1990's perceptions is a personal choice - they are Skytrax Five Star, both the Economy and Business Cabin is far superior to Jetstar and Qantas on the same route(s) and service is exceptional. On the EU ban, not sure how that works, but they fly to Amsterdam 3 times a week? The only reason they're not flying ex USA is airport security in Indonesia, which a broader impact than Garuda.
