  • Anybody have experience with Samsung grey imports?

Any case to recommend, im ready to leave Sony z3, my grey import is 2 years old and pretty much stuffed now.

    • Not sure mate, I bought Samsung galaxy 7 last year from a Chinese website. never had any issues but you never know.

      • My missus has an S7 from Malaysia and she dropped it, busted it… I went to Samsung shop to pay for some kind of repair and they basically told me to jog on.

        • so Samsung does not have the international warranty like Apple?? that pretty unprofessional

        • +1

I think Samsung Australia refuses to fix anything not from Samsung Australia even if it is the same model as Australian model and even if you want to pay to fix it. Ridiculous if you ask me.

        • +3

@letmesingh: I knew they wouldn't honour a warranty claim locally, but the phone was out of warranty and I wanted to just use my own money to pay for the repair… my issue with the whole thing was they wouldn't even take the phone off me to do anything with it.

They recommended I ring their Australian number and they'd give me a reference number that I could bring back in to them and they would be able to do the repair after that, once it was logged in the system with Samsung and there was a reference number.

However, the lady on the phone from Samsung said that is completely not how the process works and they don't touch non Aussie phones and I would need to take my repair up with Samsung Malaysia.. :(

        • @letmesingh: International warranty on phones are very very rare. I think only Apple does it and even that's bit finnicky, since they can refuse to fix your model.

"Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device."

          https://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ipad-english-a…

        • @Oversimplified: Yea but once they replaced my iphone 3gs here in Adelaide which was bought in India.

        • +1

@letmesingh: I was going to add but basically they can refuse it so it's not guaranteed. That's what I meant by finnicky.

Anyways the bits that I was going to add were:

I have heard that that rarely happens though. I do think the reason why they say they may restrict the service is because the models they sell for Cellular iPads and iPhones are different depending on the region (if you look at the model numbers, there are several model numbers). iPhone 7 for example uses different modems depending on what country you bought it from.

That doesn't, in the slightest way, make what Samsung Australia does less dodgy.

        • @Oversimplified:

You think another site might price match? $796? I got a grey import from Android enjoyed in 2015 and from eglobal in 2013 so I'm more then happy to get an import, warranty either way sucks usually.

But yeah not much confidence in this site I've never heard of before.

        • @fruitmansapote: Dunno, grey imports never were my cup of tea for things that do not have world warranty :S

        • +1

          @Oversimplified:

Refuseds to fix my watch after 4 months bought from telstra … as get this 2 year warranty doesn't apply to the watch strap as that's an accessorie even though the strap was recalled in other continents for faulty glue in the bracekt… sour taste and while I was in the store various people cracking it for various things and they seem pretty bloody inflexible… seemed they dont really give a stuff after it sold. Makes me think about samsung in the future or just deal direct with a 3rd party… or buy from officeworks they just replace no questions asked.

    • +6

I buy grey imports from eBay with the expectation that they won't offer any warranties.

I think if you pay the non-grey import Australia tax whatever you want to call it you pay more money than if you buy grey import and replace devices as and when they break. Which for me has happened a total of 1 time.

I'm still ahead buying grey imports.

      • On the other hand, my S7 Edge which I bought on launch last year, had been replaced 3 times under warranty. After buying a Xiaomi which busted after a few weeks, I am not buying anything without at least 1 year aussie warranty.

        • how much jizz juice are you getting on your devices that you need to replace it 3 times?

    • Just get yourself a chinadroid. Quarter of the price and does the same thing.

      • +1

        example

    • Got my S7 from Kogan. Had no problems until Android 7.0 came out and the phone couldn't detect it (Had South African firmware). Had a bit of a panic but found out from fellow OzBargainers that I could flash an Australia rom onto it. Good as new after that.

Save future heartache - read the threads on this company and take care!
They have been caught diddling their eBay feedback and outrageously lying.

    • mate for $150 more you can get Australian stock

  • +6

Don't go near Shopmonk, they have no rep whatsoever.

    • Oh, do u have any experience with them, someone just posted a deal with Xiaomi phone which was delivered in 3 days.

      • +4

They have a bad wrap in terms of fake feedback during their first eBay sale. I'd stay well away for a purchase so large.

        • Holyshat, 78 negs from the first deal.

        • +4

@MadMaxBargainRoad: people please have a quick read of our customer reviews.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/shopmonk_australia

Those negs were justified on the day because our prices were very high. We realized that we made a mistake and we are never going to repeat that mistake.

        • @shopmonk:

Reputation - takes a long time to build and a second to destroy.

Fake feedback aside, that deal with prices jacked above RRP was dishonest and only a month ago, still too soon to commit $800 if you ask me.

    • +7

Hello, how are you mate :)

      • wow!! that's harsh..

        • +12

        • -3

@Stealthzor: lol..that was for the first negative i received on "Hello, how are you mate" comment. 5 positives made it +4.

      • I don't know who you are or your shop but I still like your comment.

    • +1

I just bought a Fitbit from them on Wednesday and it arrived this morning. All original packaging

Something doesn't seem right about this user hurz22. Member since October 2016 but signed in today to post his first comment which is to support the deal. Sounds suss to me.

          MODS pls investigate.

        • @titan0r:

Reported for sockpuppeting, the mods will ban @Shopmonk soon

        • @titan0r: Yup, I already reported the comment however mods didn't reply….

        • @titan0r:

Does seem suss, but in his/her defense, he/she hasn't commented on the other crappy deals shopmonk had posted in recent months.

        • @titan0r: Moderators have investigated, however without significant evidence we will not ban accounts for sockpuppeting. Please do not accuse other users without sufficient evidence either.

  • Posted between June 22 and sometime in July. Wtf is with that if the phone is in Spore? Even where I live Cairns, there is a direct flight.

Anyone know how the price drops for grey imports might trend over the next few weeks? I'm keen for an upgrade in the next month.

    • Our current delivery times are between 3-9 days. Quickest deliveries have taken 3 and average is about 5-7 days. We show longer delivery times on ebay listings for some reason which we will fix when we have multiple shipping options.

      • Postage
Est. delivery: Thu, 22 Jun – Tue, 11 Jul
        Economy delivery from outside AU
        Free

        That's what I see

      • Have Ordered from places like dwi, e-global, t dimension and received phone in around 3 days.

        • That's right. 3 days is the quickest delivery time. 'SOME' of our customers also receive items in 3 days but not ALL

I am sure even DWI, T-Dimension etc can't advertise 3 -5 days delivery because 10-20% of the orders might get delivered in 5-9 days because of multiple factors.

How did OP manage to make a post from a non-Top Seller?

    • not sure @baebs. Its my 2nd post only.

this seller has less rating than mine :P

  • Hi,

I'm currently in Singapore for an extended work trip,
Can I purchase and pick up instead of getting it delivered back home to Australia?

    • Hello, You are welcome to come to our Singapore warehouse/office (PM me for address) but unfortunately, We have to ship it through our system because it involves custom declaration and other formalities. The sale must go through eBay/Paypal system. We can try and ship it today/tomorrow, should get delivered in 3-7 days.

      • I'm keen to purchase thru eBay and collect in Singapore as well. I'm not able to pm you as it states an error due to overseas user

        • Please send me message through ebay- Contact seller option, and We will send you address of Office in Singapore. you might have change your location in eBay to Australia in order to send me a message.

        • @shopmonk: have already done so earlier

        • @aroetemmm: Sorry, didn't receive any messages asking address- could you please send me new message giving Ozbargain ref and address.

        • @shopmonk: I've sent multiple messages on eBay but no response tho

        • -1

@aroetemmm: Sorry, I haven't received any messages from your side. looks like there is some problem somewhere.
Please send us an email at [email protected]

FYI- Singapore office opens on Saturday. Let me know if you are visiting.

  • +1

Probably no different than buying from Mobileciti

  • Excellent Devices has it for like $749 but seems pretty dodgy too.

  • Any recommendations on a screen protector (glass) and case (with grip but not too big and fat?)

I've found the new phones are getting hard to get glass covers for due to curved screens and when you do find one that fits often the case will not fit well.etc..

Before people say why a case or glass protector we have found them great as follows:
    - Glass screen protectors have saved me a number of times in the past (cracked mine and my wife has smashed a few but we've never lost a 'screen' since using them!)
    - Cases we like ones that wrap around sides and back with open front screen but like a cover that has a little texture, trip on the sides at least.

  • Know the risks you take when you purchase grey market stock. Sumsung Australia doesn't care about you.

If you have a problem, you'll need to send it overseas. And people got burned from a Shopping Square S7 deal because once they sent it, they didn't get a refund/replacement. Basically the lost the phone and their money

    • +2

Please note that for all warranty claims, item needs to be sent to our Yarraville VIC office which is little convenient compared to if you have to send it overseas.

      • -1

can u explain warranty more please
who pays for postage there n back to us and what is covered and how long?

        • +1

Australian consumer protection requires the seller to pay for postage each way.

        • @matt-ozb:

Tell that to LG. They wanted me to pay for the postage of my G4 to be sent to their Sydney repairer.

        • @BlitzR:
just do some googling on the accc website or acl website. it's definitely there.

        • @matt-ozb:

All good. I ended up taking it to their repairer when work flew to Sydney and the board was replaced within 1hr. But I will never buy a LG phone again.

        • op can you confirm who pays for postage if warranty claim thanks

        • +1

@jes: if there is anything wrong within the first 30 days- we pay Postage for both sides but in case there is any warranty claim after say 6 months. Buyer pays to send item to Yarraville (which would be ~$10) and we will pay for return postage.
We have done couple of replacements recently where we paid both ways for DOA units.

        • @matt-ozb:ACL may not apply as the phone is sourced in a different country (Singapore) than the user is seeking support in (Australia). I could be wrong on this.

        • +1

          @russty:

I think ACL still applies it is just harder to prosecute with an international seller.

Regarding postage costs, here is an example … just a first random example from SA …

          https://www.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/174474/Ret…

"As a general rule, if the item can be posted or easily returned, you should cover the initial cost of returning
faulty goods to the supplier. You should keep the receipts for those costs because if the returned goods are
later confirmed to have a fault – whether major or minor – you can recover your reasonable postage or
          transportation costs from the seller."

I think the typical wording for 'return responsibilities' on ACL websites is written for the majority of transactions which would be bricks & mortar purchases. ie you drive there to buy, so you can drive there to return. But when buying online, it is a bit different.

Anyway, I researched this pretty heavily a few years ago as I was selling grey import goods in Australia from my website.

  • As cheap as this is..Grey stock to me is just a no go in case of those 'accidents' which I usually don't encounter when purchasing aussie stock but as soon as I buy grey stock something happens..lolol

        • Hello, ebay messaging service was down yesterday. I can confirm it's working now. Could you please drop us a message that you want a dual sim via ebay.

  • -2

    I wouldn't pay $300+ for a phone without warranty.

    • +1

Well lucky the seller provides warranty.

  • So what is the best aussie stock price out there, and how might they trend soon?

Mobileciti $1104 I think, aussie warranty stock right?

  • +7

I don't get it, all these people wanting warranty and Australian Stock.
If you smash the phone, it isn't going to be covered under warranty anyway. Also honestly don't know of anyone personally that has ever had 'hardware or software' issues that require a replacement phone under warranty anyway either Grey Stock or 'Local' stock.

    • +2

Erm… I've had plenty with the iPhone
      - Speaker stops working
      - Camera stops working
      - Earpiece stops working
      - Home button stops working/insensitive
      - Volume rocker loose

      All covered by local warranty

That's why I bought a local S8+ from Mobile Citi

      • +1

yeah because it was an iPhone

The reason why everyone wants Australian warranty is because even if they smash their screen which isn't covered by warranty, Samsung Australia will not touch it to replace the screen (even if you pay). Your only bet would be those rip off mobile shops (Samsung replaces screens for cheaper too).

        • +1

Those things above can fail with an S8 also, which is covered by local warranty. I didn't mention above a cracked screen. Neither Apple or Samsung covers that.

        • @cyrax83:

we all know that apple makes their devices with a lifespan of only 2 years (longer for ipads), after which they start failing. If not, they release software updates to slow your device down intentionally.

        • heatgun + hair dryer

5 screws to remove the ribbon cable

$150 to $250 for a replacement screen if depending on how old the device is

          follow youtube instructions

          couldnt be (profanity) simpler

even easier with other components like speaker

    • Given my issues with Sony (mainly the headphone jack) I wouldn't mind aussie warranty, I know here I am moving over to Samsung but hey already some aussie stock is under $999 which is pretty good.

    • +3

Ask anyone with a LG G4

      • yeap had to send mine overseas to HK to get the bootloop issue fixed. Around 6 weeks.

      • +1

Took the hit with the G4 but I think refusing to repair a product made by the same company just because it is not bought locally is just unreasonable, especially when the customer is ready to pay for the repairs.

      • I've had the bootloop issue also which was fixed by a replacement board. I still get shitty battery life and will never buy another LG phone again.

    • +6

Relax people stop screaming at rep. If you don't like it leave it to others. What's the point of keep repeating the same stoy

  • Hi, what is the origin of these samsung S8 set, Singapore or? i.e. to say do they have valid warranty in Singapore in case we can't get repair in Australia?

    Thanks

    • Read up. They stated that they have a repairer in VIC

      • -1

What was said is that there is an office in VIC to send your phone for warranty claims. Doesn't actually detail where it is repaired and the process it goes through. Maybe this can be clarified?
