I got the Moto G5 to replace my battling Nexus 5. Great replacement as it's the same price point with slightly better specs. I don't play games, just internet, photos and WhatsApp. No lag and battery has been great so far. Paid $265 a month ago.

  • A family member needs a new phone, so we're thinking of getting either the G5 or G5 plus. Two questions:

    • Is the G5 Plus worth ~$100 more? It looks like the main differences are faster processor and better (lower f-stop) camera?
    • Any gotcha's with using a SD Card as internal storage?
    • -2

Need to get fast memory card for write speed so SanDisk extreme or Samsung Evo. All are fast read but for photos and movies you want fast write. Else works great. Sandisk ultra is too slow.

      • +1

Cheers. I've got a EVO+ SD card so it should be OK

Looks like I might wait for a deal on the G5 plus - seems to be worth the extra $$

        • +1

Yep, agree. To me the sual sim 3G/4G function is a must for my next phone. Also the swipe/home functions on the fingerprint sensor is something I would use too. Oh,….NFC kinda wanted too if spending around $250 or more on new smartphone ( although waiting for a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Kate Edition with B28 and dual 3G/4G sim capable but won't have NFC is ok for under $250 ish. )

This is not the intended purpose of cards like those. You will write video to the phone just fine with a normal class 10 sd card..

    • +1

To be honest, it is not recommended to use SD card as internal storage. The phone will become sluggish over time (few months say around 6-8 months). You will start getting errors saying that SD card is ejected. Only way after that is formatting the SD card. This was more widespread on Marshmallow, don't know about Nougat though. But don't keep anything critical on SD card adopted as internal storage!

I haven't used either and basing this purely on specs and what I've read, so don't take it as expert opinion:

G5 has 2GB RAM and SD430, G5 PLUS 3GB RAM and SD625 - I think it's a big difference in performance. 2GB RAM might not be enough for many users nowadays. G5 Plus also has gorilla glass and slightly larger screen.

Keeping in mind the G4 Plus had a SD617, the G5 SD430 would be a bit of a step back in that case for the same price as G4 Plus. I'm a big fan of the G5 Plus but don't see much appeal in the G5 value wise (2GB RAM might not be enough for you and you'll have to upgrade earlier also). You can get G5 Plus for $90 more right now, and an even better deal might come up. Another option is grabbing a G4 Plus 32GB/3GB - more RAM, double the storage and better processor for ~$270 off DWI eBay with CLAP10 although that is grey stock.

      Comparison link

As the phone that single-handedly created the quality budget smartphone category, we hold the Moto G in high regard and also have high expectations from very new device in the lineup. The Moto G5 we tested earlier didn't quite meet our expectations in that regard. However, the G5 Plus hits the mark and reminds us again why we love this series.

      • Thanks for the comprehensive reply! I'll have a look at the G4 Plus as well. There seems to be some issues with using a SD card as internal storage. I'll probably get the 32GB version. Sigh … it always costs more than you expect.

Review for the G5 on HN…
It's not a high end smart phone but does the job - perfect for providing kids with a smart phone.
Lucky kids! I'm 'making do' with a $138 G4 Play - so last year.

  • What version is the IPad? Looks like Air.

    • 5th gen. 2017.

      • Which is no better than ipad air 2

        • Both have their pros and cons

        • +2

It has A9 processor. The only thing Air 2 has over it is a laminated screen and it's a few grams lighter.

        • @rorymeister:

Well that's why I said no better, doesn't mean one is worse

        • @lostn:

          Version number doesn't dictate everything
iPad air two with 3 cores @ 1.5GHz is still faster that iPad 5th Gen with only 2 cores, even it's at 1.8GHz

        • @aldoboy: As far as I know, Air is the 5th gen.

  • Is there a way to get office works to pricematch online? My local store has no stock of the iPad. Thanks

    • Surely your local ow will order one for you? They've done so for me when out of stock.

      • My local store is unfortunately not that helpful. Even if they did order, I doubt they would pricematch.

        • +1

My local (Southport, QLD) orderedr me an iPad air 2 about 3 months back when out of stock. At the time they were hapy to price match too. I guess it depends on store and who you get.

        • +1

Try being friendly and treating them as a human instead of a service, (not saying you dont already but you would be suprised how many do) and they might be alot more helpful.

        • +1

@Slippery Fish: thanks, yes I do like to think that i treat others as i would like to be treated. The salesperson on my previous visit was friendly, just not helpful.

    • +5

You can price match with them over the phone. Very easy and pickup from local store.

      • thank you, done

    • Call office works and state you want to price beat. They will ask your credit card details then, ship it for free if your product, like in ^ this case, costs $50+…

      • +1

thank you for the tip, they would not ship it for free unless they price matched the Harvey Norman price plus shipping so I have selected to collect in store.

    • +1

1300 Office should be able to help you out. Price matching and click and collecting is doable in store though. Legitimately they do the price match then order item. Grab your name number email. Easy

  • and $50 credit with Amex?

    • Need to spend over $350, so you'd have to buy 2.

      • +1

        i meant iPad

        • Sorry. One track mind. Only looked because of the Moto G5, so the other items didn't even cross my mind!!

        • @englfc: no biggies :)

  • +1

Looks like 5 got no NFC?

    • +1

Correct. One of the reasons I'd probably get the Plus

  • What is a OW PB?

        Good idea!

    • Thanks OP, I PB at OW….
*Office Works Price Beat (and OP is original poster)
(5% off, though my local store called and checks my local HN (Harvey Norman) had stock.
I'm guessing Officeworks will watch to see how many buy at this price and adjust by lunchtime.

      • Spoke too soon, officeworks just changed their prices when I went to buy >.> I guess they really hate those razor thin apple margins.

Don't forget our good friend Walker the Price Check Ranger

        • +2

Bought the G5 at 3.39pm. Must have just scraped in b4 officeworks matched the price. Called online and they said no stock. Went to store and someone found stock straight away. Dodgy

  • Does the Moto G5 have dual sim both able to do 3G/4G ?? Chipset Snapdragon 430 is able to do dual sim 3G/4G according to their website
    https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/430

It's not the 625 as on OW details, they do list 430 under specs though.

Also does anyone know if you can use the fingerprint unlock for swipe gestures like the G5 plus can ??

Edit: Looks like for now the G5 is not operating in dual 3G/4G mode like the G4 Plus and G5 Plus, but might be updated later on as chipset is capable. See discussion below

    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-G5-Moto-G5-Plus/Moto-G5-4g…

    • You would have to ask yourself why they haven't updated the G4 plus yet if they were going to for dual mode.

      • The G4 Plus was already able to use both sims for 3G/4G, so is the G5 Plus. Not yet out of the box for the G5, if ever.

  • can we use dual sim and memory card at the same time?

    • Yes, on this model as well as the Plus versions you can use both sim slots as well as a Separate Micro S/D Card Slot.

cant pricebeat anymore.. OW decreased their price to $258 as well
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/motorola-m…

    • :-(

    • They did it 25min ago to the iPad aswell, was just about to drive into store. Razor thin apple margins are not to be played with I guess :(

    • +1

OW Kezwick SA won't drop from $258 at 6.45pm :(
Will OW price match another OW if I get someone to send me their receipt I wonder?

  • Thanks got one OP!

  • I was browsing the Harvey Norman website and found the Moto G4 Play for $187. Officeworks had them for $180 but no stock anywhere apparently. I bought 2 for my wife and I to replace our old Nexus 4's. Very happy with the phone for the price point.

    • Moto G4 Play was $138. Received mine on 5/6. Good phone. Very happy at that price.

      • Hadn't seen that deal, wished I didn't see your post!

        • Had thought twice about adding it…
Enjoy the phone, it's still a good price.
