JW Black and Double Black are quite smoky. Maybe not for beginners.

Distinguish whiskey and whisky… and whiskey, and I see you did. The Irish, who invented whiskey, use the 'e', as do the Yanks. Mostly the rest use no e but that aint the only differences. So given you ask about whisky, and blends I assume you mean Scotch but its not exclusive to Scotch. Single v blend, generally blends are nicer IMO. Its like wine, most good drops are blended to make them good but singles can be, but will be pricey and while not necessary, you can pay hundreds of thousands for a bottle of whisky.

The difference between say Bourbon and Whisky is bourbon has no peat smoke notes as they dont use peat smoke, and is aged in NEW oak barrels so can pick up vanilla and fruits from the oak. Scotch is aged in old used barrels and picks up hints of whatever was in the barrels, and usually peat smoke. SOme of it is aged ion used bourbon barrels, or Sherry and Madeira for examples.

If whisky, try Canadian, Japanese or Tasmanian.

Bourbon v Whiskey in the US, to call it Bourbon it must come from the 5 I think towns of Bourbon county and use NEW American Oak barrels (I think theres more rules, but thats the main ones I can think of). Tennessee is not one, has less strict rules but most follow similarly to the Bourbon recipes anyway, so they are referred to as the various brands of whiskeys.

Thats my loose take on it. You have time, try it all.

      • Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated for your time to explain.

        • Thought I might be wrong on the Bourbon County thing and the label Bourbon. Google says my suspicion Im wrong is confirmed, it just needs to be made in the US to be called Bourbon in the US. I wondered where old wives tales come from, apparently me.

        • His advice was useless

The best whisky is Scotch. Don't mess around with anything else. Lifes too short.

Blends are for easy sipping and are smooth going down.

Malt whisky is for challenging your palate. Often needs water in the whisky to open the flavours.

Look up the Scotch Whisky Tasting Map on Google images and begin your journey of exploration!

      • I'm trying out the glenfiddich 12 yo. Thanks for the advice everyone!

To clarify what Tuba said, Bourbon is whisky made in America mainly from corn, and Scotch is whisky made in Scotland mainly from malted barley. There are also some other types of whiskys as noted. Other than Americans, when people refer to whisky they are generally talking about Scotch (IMO it is superior to all others). Whisky is aged in barrels and the longer it is aged the smoother flavour (and more expensive) it will be. A blend is just two or more single malts 'blended' together. Neither is necessarily better despite the common misconception that single malt is always superior.

I don't know if they still do this anymore or not, but Johnnie Walker (one brand of Scotch) used to put on free 'tasting nights'. You get to try small samples of a few single malts from different regions in Scotland, and some JW blends, along with an explanation of each. This would be an excellent way to get an introduction to drinking Scotch. Otherwise try a Scotch aged at least 8 years. Brand and region is subjective.

Ooo that would be a good one to go to. I'll have to peek around.

The problem with trying is…the bottles are big and I'd only drink a little every few days. It's going to take forever to try so many brands and regions. So that tasting nights sounds Good!

    • My 0.02c - try The Famous Grouse.

If you're looking to get into whisky I'd highly recommend a visit to Whisky and Alement on Russel street I think in Melbourne.
They do intro classes to whisky, then have a bunch of other more specific classes.
Luke McCarthy takes the classes ( at least the two I've been to) who writes for the Age and has a book or two and just knows everything there is to know about alcohol.
Get yourself down and you'll learn a tonne from him.

      • Ah much appreciated

Great deal here's how it will go down to anyone trying this for the first time….
    1. Buy Deal and throw in a $1 greeting card.
    2. Try this horrible excuse for a scotch that tastes more like I imagine a scotch filled ashtray would taste.
    3. Be very thankful bought greeting card as well to help gift second bottle to inlaws.
    4. Keep newly opened bottle for guests when they come over to make your other scotch seem like a 1K bottle, or give it to that weird uncle who likes this crap.

    • +3

You underestimate how many weird uncles are on OzBargain!

  • Thanks for the tip.
The full price online for Jim Beam Black Label Bourbon is $39.90.
Buy 3 bottles to get over $100 less $20 with COUNT20 works out $33.23 per bottle Click & Collect from my local store.
    Sensational!

  • Is it only Paypal?

  • Got this deal and it went smoothly enough, the Double Black isn't as good as I remember it being although the drink itself may be exactly the same.
