  • This was around the $180-$190 mark 18 months ago.. madness.
    Stock up in Japan

    • So your opinion, or fact… stock is so easy to find in Japan right?

There is a reason why prices have sky rocketed

      • stock is so easy to find in Japan right?

        was in Japan last weekend

yeah, you need to go to a bottle-o rather than a supermarket or convenience store.

AU$256 on rakuten.co.jp (but not available to australia - if you're going to Japan then have it delivered to your accommodation)

I was in Japan early this month and this was not easy to find but it's not impossible to find if you know where to look.. ended up buying 9 bottles at 12500 yen each (rrp)

        • How did you bring 9 bottles back? Or did you drink 7 while there?

        • I went with 3 other friends who didnt drink

you can bring 3 back per person… alcholol duty free is 2.25L

one bottle of Hibiki 17 is 700ml so you can bring 3 in per person

        • Can you share the details of the shops in Japan where you got the Hibiki from? Thanks

          Department stores

most department stores has a 1 bottle per head policy but I was in Sapporo Mitsukoshi and they had no limit per head so I cleaned up the place. got some Yamasaki 12's just to drink in Japan on the trip.

also found some Hibiki 17s in random grocery stores that sell alcohol

but if you are only going to major cities (Osaka and Tokyo), then your chances are slim.. Every Asian tourist in Japan are in the department stores looking for the same things. If stock comes into a department store, it will get cleaned up within a few hours. Despite this, I did find some Yamasaki 12s in Takashimaya in Shinjuku and I found a bottle each of 12 and 17 taketsuru at rrp which I was over the moon about as I know for sure that even Nikka has rang out of in their warehouse

        • @ynot1985: I was in Tokyo and Osaka last time and only saw the 12 yo bottles. The higher age all out of stock.

        • @dle:

the previous time I was in Japan (Oct 2016). I found a lot of stuff at rrp in Tokyo (you can still find a lot of things now.. e.g. 30 year hibiki, 40 year Nikka etc but all at inflated prices)

          12 and 18 year yamazaki
          17, 21 and even 25 (taketsuru)
          17 and 21 Hibiki

but this time, it's slim pickings.. even 12 year Hakushu was rare (people used to not buy this)

Got mine for $299 goes good with coke.lol. Before that I got one for $160.

  • Wow. I bought a bottle in Japan about 4 years ago for a LOT less. Artificial scarcity?

    • Possibly. Japanese whiskey's have gained a lot of popularity recently. The Yamazaki 18yr is also ridiculously expensive now.

    • Real scarcity, they were barely known outside of Japan until they won a pile of awards . That's why they suddenly have unaged ones as well (Hibiki Harmony, for example), because they became well known way faster than they could ramp up production. So they ramped up production, sell some of it now and in a few years will have more 12/17/25 (at likely a lower price). But it's all about trends. Like how Starward can sell for $90 a bottle when it's just a 3 year old whisky made in Port Melbourne, Australian whiskey has become a bit of a thing thanks to the Tassies.

I got smashed off a couple of bottles back in 2012 in Tokyo, bought it in a convenience store (even had a small 25 year old, I think), wish I stocked up then :/

      • I got hakushu 12, yamazaki 12 and hibiki 17. Don't know if I'm remembering right, but I wouldn't have thought I would have paid more than 60-100 a bottle

      • starward ….. actually tastes great and i asked then how they get the fladvour as it tastes older than 3 years …… reckon it's our hotter climate so the angels she is great ( we all recall school chemistry and that reactions occur quicker at higher temperatures as does evaporation) and it ages quicker …… so japanese and scots could probabaly do the same . it's all just chemistry.

I think also age in whisky is a misnomer of sorts - good new make whisky (raw spirit, just distilled, no barrel time) is surprisingly easy to drink with little of the burning medicinal taste you might expect.
