      Don't forget AC88u :)

I was future proofing with the 5300 :-)

It's only 5300 because its tri-band, id have to disagree as the protocol isn't newer or any different, just they add up the speed of the 3 bands as a marketing gimmic. Look up the reliability and reviews of the Ac88u and hope you make an informed decision :-)

        • @nizsmo:

The AC5300 has an additional band on 5Ghz. The AC88U has 4x additional gigabit ports.

Personally I bought the AC88U (although I replaced the stock WRT with Merlin firmware).

Even as an I.T. worker/gamer and with several people streaming HD Netflix on weekends, I can see no example of where the AC5300 would provide me with real world gains. If I had 10+ AC devices running data intensive services concurrently then maybe, but I find the most users I have attached at once would be during family gatherings (10-14 people max) when everyone has a device connected to the Wi-Fi, and during these times people at most look up the occasion youtube clip, or look up a topic of conversation.

        • @boredofficeworker: Yes thats exactly what I am trying to get at, the bands offer no extra speed, only concurrently with multiple devices which isn't normally the problem or bottleneck at home; hence my suggestion towards AC88u and the Ac5300 just being more of a marketing gimmick.

        • @nizsmo: I think we have overlooked the most crucial feature though… It looks like a badarse mothership/saraficial altar!

It's not my cup of tea but I can see people choosing it just for that reason. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • Got an old AC68U - has run faultlessly

    It needs more antennas.

    • I wonder how many of them are functional and how many are purely aesthetic (i.e. there is no circuitry from the antenna to the router)?
