  • what kind of devices wifi 7 mesh can we create with this router?

  • The switch part of the udm7 is 2.5gbe, and only 1 of the 4 ports is poe.

$519 is the price at landmark computers so this is at best $10 off. Often around $529 as the regular price

I have one of these - the SPF+ port can run at 10Gbe (I have a 10G copper SPF+ in mine) and the ports are assignable (so you don't have to use it as a WAN port you can use it as a LAN which is what I do)

Yeah but still, 1 SFP+ port.

Buy a switch? Not sure what else you can expect in this price range.

          • @zubzub: I'm only highlighting it's a 2.5gbe switch, of which only 1 port is Poe.

The single SFP+ port is not a replacement for a 10g switch for full 10g networking.

This is because OPs post highlights

Desktop 10G Cloud Gateway with integrated WiFi 7, PoE switch

And at first read it sounds like it's a full 10g Poe switch as well. It is not. I already know this full well, which is why I'm eyeing the XG 8 Poe switch to go with fiber gateway for full 10g networking. Also aware it's ridiculously much more expensive. I care about local LAN speeds as well, hence that, but for most people where the highest internet speed available is gigabit only it doesn't really matter.

Also in theory, if you add on future, separate wifi 7 access points can get over 2.5gbe speeds so that's already a bottleneck unless you use a different switch

The udm7 is a fantastic all in one solution I'd recommend to most people, I'm even running the old udm now.

Ugh not sure why I care to try to be helpful sometimes, gonna crawl back into my cave now.

        • What is wrong with a SFP+ port? Just get an adaptor to connect ethernet.

          • @Aliensf: Nothing wrong with SFP+ port. Desired even, over 10g ethernet. I'm saying there's only 1 of them so it is not a 10g switch, to respond to remorhaz. I personally prefer SFP+ if Poe is not required.

            • @lawyerz: AH yes, I get ya. Its an all in one entry device for the home user to get them hooked, you cant even run all the apps on it.. I understand why they call it a 10Gb router, can take 10gb connection and makes sure no one can use up all the bandwidth with 2.5Gb ethernet ports.

      • Same, got one a week or so back. SFP+ to a switch. 10gb link. Used as lan instead of wan. Going great.

  • I used different ASUS routers for 15 years and recently changed to a UDR7 and wow they are great. Good deal too.

    • Better wifi range that Asus?

      • Yes, range for me is about ~15m more on UDR7 than RT-AX88U.

        • Same I've using Asus for many years and its been great but the top end Asus routers are getting expensive. I've been thinking of chagning over to either UDR7 or UX7.

With UDR7/UX7, can it run as a standalone ie configs VLANs, firewall rules etc via web UI without other Unifi hardware or server?

Btw is your WAN PPPoE? If it is any issue?

          • @ShadowSaver:

Yes, they run standalone as an all-in-one with no other hardware/server required. The ability to configure VLANs is great. The ASUS Guest Network Pro (new feature on latest higher end ASUS) supports VLAN config but still has limitations.

Not connecting to WAN with PPoE so cannot comment on that.

            • @kizzaaa: Cool. Another question. Can you create multiple wifi SSIDs and apply Vlan to each SSID? Or 2.4g, 5g and 6g all binding into one SSID?

              • @ShadowSaver: @ShadowSaver I got expressvpn on a separate VLAN and wifi. Can either associate devices to vpn or to separate VLAN.

              • @ShadowSaver: Yep separate SSIDs can be configured with separate VLANs. Super easy to set up.

  • Just a word of caution: these devices run hot. The WAN1 port can lock up, requiring a hard reset (unplug power cable). Hopefully resolved soon with firmware update.
