Now it is 1st July, is it subject to GST?

    • +12

That bill was moved to a possible next year start, not active yet.

  • Worth waiting for their 11th of July sale?

Would like to pick up two 8TB drives.

    • +6

Not worth it. How do I know? http://amzn.to/2tb21xG

      • +6

Wow, I need one of them.
Will it be cheaper during the 11th of July sale?

        • +5

Step 1: Buy the crystal ball
Step 2: check whether the crystall ball will be cheaper.
          Step 3: ??
          Step 4: profit!!

      • Because the crowd went HO!!!!

  • Hmmm…. so the ONLY drives WD make in 8TB are the RED's & PURPLE? Good deal then for e RED and an enclosure

    • +1

      I'm waiting for tonight, oh-oh-ooo

    • Isn't that more expensive per TB?

      • They are RED drives and the NAS enclosure could be sold for $80 to $100.

    • Yeah, I'm so glad I snagged that!

      Good luck!

  • Can anyone confirm if these will be REDS?

    • +2

I got 2 of these a few weeks ago, they are not.

    • +1

Can also confirm - got 2 myself and both not reds. As someone mentioned above they're not normal models that are sold separately. they're WD80EZZX

  • I'm not convinced that this unit does in fact contain a Red drive.

The Amazon page refers to it as containing "WD quality drives".

This compares with the description of the Mybook Duo on the same page as having "WD Red drives".

And this page on the Overclockers site confuses things even more (and some of the comments are from WD staff)!
    http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/776633-8TB…

This would be a complete sticking point for me - I wouldn't consider it without a Red drive.

    • The DUO enclosure contain red WD drives.

The single 8tb externals are not reds. They are WD80EZZX drives.

this one is even cheaper if Archive is ok for you,

With Prime and referal creidt, brings it down to AUD 254.5 for me

  • 287.95 for me. How do you get it for 279?

    • Buy in US dollars and let your CC do the conversion. Amazon's conversion sucks.

I don't think we ever thought this had a Red inside. Anyone confused is probably looking at Amazon reviews. You need to drill down into reviews specific to the 8TB single drive.

IIRC you need the dual drive to get Reds.

    • What are red drives? Faster? More reliable? Last longer? The colour red?

  • Looking like $1 more for shipping gets you a hub also
    https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-External-Desktop-Storage-STEL…

Might look into getting that :D

  • You guys use a forwarder (shipto etc) to get your gear to oz?

    • Amazon ship a lot (most?) of products to Australia, including this one.

      • Yeah im looking at a security cam that doesnt unfortunately

        • I like reship

        • -1

Probably not worth it to use a 3rd party, check eBay?

  • +3

Got four of these a month or two ago for about $15 more per drive. Shucked them and now running them in an Xpenology NAS. Great drives, run far cooler than the 4TBs they replaced and far quieter to boot! I wasn't too fussed if they were/weren't Reds but apparently they're basically the same just without TLER activated. Seem to be working fine at this early stage so only time will tell.

    • That would mean they are essentially WD Green or Blue drives then, which can be had locally for as low as $100 on sale.

$100 8TB HDDs? Wow, please supply links!!

        • Sorry, for some reason I had 3TB drives in my mind, disregard my comment above.

        • @Lorindor: Ha, no worries mate. That would be nice though… 8TB for $100! I wouldn't care what colour they were ;)

  • If removed do the hard drives in these park their heads every few seconds ? Can that be turned off with something like the WD utility wdidle3 ?

    • +2

Mine haven't done that at all, all have load counts under 100 after over 300 hours

      • Thanks !

  • Great find and price too but if you are looking for something that will last even longer, just get a WD Gold and buy generic enclosure.
WD Gold has 2.5 million hours MTBF while the WD Red and Red pro only have 1 million.
It all depends on how much you are willing to spend but the Golds are sometimes cheaper than the Reds because they are less popular yet stronger and more reliable. I have the Red Pro and the Gold in my QNAP, so far I think I love the way the Gold performs, so I made it the primary in my Raid 1 setup

  • How do these compare to the WD one on offer?

    At $179.99 USD, even cheaper.

    • It's a Seagate, enough said… I've had 4 failures, 3 were the 3tb barracudas. No more Seagates for me.

  • Can anyone please clarify if the power extension plug for drives like these from the US work as is in AUS?

    • You mean the Plug Pack? Yes, they work fine. They are rated for 100-240V however you will need an adaptor to change the pin angle from US to AU. Alternatively you can use a pair of regular size pliers to carefully bend the US pins out to the AU angle. This can work well with some products but can destroy others depending how brittle the plastic is. I have done it to my WD Plug Pack and it worked really well however I've done it to others and the plastic has just self-destructed. Not recommended and must only be done at your own risk!! A cheap adaptor is much safer & more reliable.

      • Thanks for the info. Are there any recommended adaptors for US->AU?

        • +2

If you can handle waiting 3-4 weeks then buy a few of these for $1ea: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/US-EU-Universal-To-AU-Australia-3… They're 3-pin so they're earthed plus they sit tight in the socket and on top of that they offer US and UK adaption which is handy! They're $3 from a 'local seller' however there's no guarantee these aren't coming from the same place and may take the same amount of time anyway: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal-Travel-Adapter-Internat…

Lots of local shops sell these adaptors however be prepared to pay $5 or even $10-$15 for them!

        • Thanks for the links. In Australia there are incredible markups on small tech items like this(the small circular batteries are another example).
