Looking to build a cheap everyday pc and came across this beauty, if I could get a cheaper mobo I would jump on this but sadly the mobo would make my "cheap" pc not so cheap.

This is sandy bridge E NOT Current generation but it is still a i7

      Or comment like that..

      Why though?

Boards are hard to find and expensive because they have the ability to run many of the higher core count Xeons.

It's an old proc and only quad core, the lowest end processor supported by the chipset in the Core range.

A used 3930K is a lot better and around the same price, should you be able to find a board

        • Thanks very much for the explanation mate!

You're correct. The CPU is old, the motherboards expensive and hard to find by now. The whole point to get an LGA2011 CPU is to get access to Hex core or higher CPUs, this is only a Quad Core. It's a really bad idea all around

edit: Approx $330 to get a non-generic new board from eBay

You would get much better performance even from a Ryzen 5 for much less money when considering the cost of the motherboard

Plus the cost of matching cooler, a PSU to match, ideally tripal channel ram. Buy a new i7 for the same money not this pc with second hand mainboard

There's a reason why 2nd hand versions of this CPU go for like $70.

The motherboard is expensive and difficult to find. Should you manage to find one, there's plenty of alternative CPUs that are better and not much more expensive (eg, 8-core Xeon E5s for $120)

    • Socket LGA 2011 is hard to find? What?

      • +2

LGA 2011 boards have different versions on different chipsets..

        Very confusing for me too.

For example, LGA2011-V3 is on the X99 platform , so if you end up buying one of these you won't be able to use the CPU despite the number of pins being the same.

        • Ah k, gotcha.

      • The boards are relatively hard to find.. they generally sell for about $200 which is a bit extreme for a very old board

A lot of old Xeon E5s are coming off datacenters and sold very cheaply. This causes a drastic imbalance in the availability of 2011 CPUs in comparison to motherboards.

    • X79 motherboard (socket 2011 v1) is hard to find, more than 6 years old now and because they are not mass produced as the b75/z77(which shareded by i3, i5, i7).
But if you have one and a good cpu, these is not much need for upgrade. The CPU performance gain from Intel for the last couple of generation is just Meh. I am still using my i7 3960x I got under $200 two years ago. BTW I bought a i7 3820x from ebay for $200 5 years ago, and sold it about same price 2 years ago, but with a working x79 board.

My advice here, dont buy it at this price unless you have a x79 motherboard waiting for CPU and you can not find any other suitalbe CPU.

  • Lol I got a hp tower with i7-3770 free from the kerb. It was almost brand new just missing hdd and ram.

You're on OzBargain. We've ALL found PC's on the side of the road that we've brought home =P

      • Yep especially if it has license key sticker attached …

  • If I currently have these specs should I buy this CPU? would it give me much "upgrade"?

    Intel Core i5 4440 LGA1150 CPU 3.3Ghz 6Mb Cache Haswell
    Gigabyte H87M-D3H

    • It's a sidegrade. Not an upgrade… remember this is Sandy Bridge, two generations before Haswell.

You will also need to spend an extra $150~200 or so to get a compatible mobo.

      • cool thanks @scrimshaw - i will give it a miss then…but what would you recommend if I wanna upgrade just the CPU?

        • A second hand Core i7 4770k perhaps.

But to be honest, I would wait for Intel Coffee Lake. It's been delayed till Q2 2018 though.

AMD Threadripper coming soon too but it's not a CPU that's made for gaming. More for people building a workstation desktop.

        • @scrimshaw: thanks mate, the issue for me is that I dont think i will notice the difference in performance cos I mainly use it to surf the net, only play games occasionally… and I have the R9 270X graphics card which I think it's enough for modern games? (eg. GTA V)

        • @homersyd:

you don't need a CPU upgrade. Still plenty of power.

your GPU is a little outdated, though still capable. Maybe you should look at an upgrade end of this year when the prices come down a bit, as everything is expensive now because of crypto mining.

        • @scrimshaw: cool thanks…good to know i dont need to upgrade for now…

        • you don't read the above comment. the mobo along will cost $300+ (oversea stock) without warranty, then a $40 fan, with the CPU total $589 and beg it works for some years. A brand new i7-7700 plus B250 board only cost $550, guarantee faster with local warranty, just need to get new ram for it, but still that old CPU use double power than latest one, not a cheap PSU can handle it after aging.

My first comment is to warn people don't jump on it without asking, I won't explain especially on the move while replying, but seriously some ppls just like to neg valuable comment.

  • Not related to this post, was just looking at my current old PC and what socket (1150)it uses. Found this while googling
    http://www.itmadness.com.au/CORE-I7-4790K-400GHZ-8MB
    • Why is the price $999,999.00??

      • must be in Vietnamese dong

      • Lol thats what I thought.

  • Wow - I wonder where they found such old stock (assuming it is new….).
