Here we go, the competition is heating up! Soon these airlines will be paying us to fly to HK.

  • Easy way to maintain Velocity Gold status for those on the three month trial.

EDIT: actually, may just fall short of the 5000 mile, 40 SC segment.

    • Dammit you're right. Thought I could get gold status for a whome year cheaply. Might have to just wait for a cheap dom flight

      • Worth giving them a call and checking…sometimes they're more generous on the mileage calcs.

        • Didn't think this is something they can do but yeah thanks for the tip. Haven't seen you on here much these days

        • @nightelves: yeah, haven't been as active of late. They are definitely able to confirm min/max status credits.

    • +1

Really happy, had booked a Air NZ flight to Vancouver before being offered Explore Gold, which gets me 100 SC I'm pretty sure. That and a short getaway to Adelaide gets me proper Gold which I am going to enjoy to the max!!

      • Do you know if they gave you gold status for one year on top of your three months.

        • Yes, it's additional.

      • Does explore gold give you a guest allowance for air NZ lounge?

  • Sigh, bought them for $560 per person on the last deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310471

Looks like the price dropped $100

  • dat 10 hr transit time tho..

    • the joy of living in melbourne… winning!

  • Wow those periods are the hottest in HK! Don't recommend to go unless you love the sweats!

    • July is abominable but by September it's usually pretty nice. Wear T-shirt and shorts and you're fine.

The bigger weather risk is flight delays due to typhoons, particularly in July and August.

      • +1

For the past 2 years, it was muggy AF and 35-degrees up until November!

        • That's not even close to true. I was there in November, it was low 20s. And the HKO has records: http://www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/pastwx/mws2016/mws201611.htm

In September you're looking at high 20s most days. A bit of humidity but unless you're in a business suit it's comfortable enough.

        • @lionelhutz: I disagree. September is usually when the Autumn festival happens and it is still stinking hot even at night times to do the lanterns and stuff. The cool doesnt usually settle in until about a week or two after Autumn Festival going by the old Lunar calendar dates.

If it is hot - people complain. If it is cold - people complain. Awesome !

      • +1

I love my cold trips! Hot is a no no in HK!

        • You should see Hongkongers when the weather is cold. They hate the cold. Also buildings don't have much insulation so you really feel it.

  • anyone know what fare class these result in? trying to figure out if it's discount economy or economy for points earning :\
(can almost guarantee it's discount economy but worth checking…)

    • they're normally discounted economy that will reward you half the miles traveled as points.

    • +3

Discount economy. For future, the easiest way to check is to select Expedia or Wotif, these will show the fare class on the booking page. For example these are 'T' flights.

Then just go here and check out what class is what fare type (even for partner airlines): https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Info/StatusEar…

      • Excellent tip!

      • sweet thanks - i checked 3 or 4 others (but not expedia or wotif) but couldn't find the fare class listed anywhere.

if it was normal economy it'd be enough points to tip me into platinum, much more chance of convincing the wife it'd be a good idea to spend a week in HK! :)

  • OMG…spewing after booking family's flight at $930pp for HK+TW in Nov…

  • I missed Qantas deal last time by one day.
Hope Cathay will do another sale soon (I wanted to fly in Nov).

  • Thanks IWTf

  • Great price though I will still travel with Cathay as it's too hard to transit with young kids from ADL.

DAMN… if only this is available for next year… 3 trips lined up between now and Christmas!

    • wow so jealous how do you score so much leave? (if you're even working to begin with lol)

      • well 2 of them are Friday to Monday type trips… and I've accumulated over 30 days of annual leave over the last number of years…

        • ic….well in that case enjoy your well-deserved leave lol

  • Speaking on experience, I've just returned from Hong Kong after spending Christmas and New Years there. Beautiful country and such kind and caring people. We stayed at the City View hotel, with buffet breakfast included for 7 nights. Literally a minutes walk from the train station and "Ladies Market" our experience was amazing. We went to Disneyworld twice, did a few tours and just enjoyed the place for what it is. Will definitely return.

Secondly, why is it so expensive from Darwin!? Literally the gateway to Asia!

  • Seems Qantas is cheaper for MEL-HKG 19-Aug <> 26-AUG for $494. Via SYD in one direct though,

  • Booked a ticket 9th September to 22nd of September for $450 from Melbourne

    Thanks so much!!!

  • +1

Anything over $400 isn't a bargain to that part of the world anymore. Under $500 is certainly routine.

Next week I'm on a $373 return flight to China with a full service airline (Hainan).

  • It is not cheap when you add $200 for luggage and meals.

  • Unless you are really fit and have no sweat, then HK Summer is pretty good. For most bigger Aussies and fat(ter) Chinese like me, tend to stay away between April and September. The biggest problem is not the heat - but the monsoons bring about extreme humidity. You walk outside and you're basically swimming in steam within the air. I dont mind dry heat as much, but humid heat is another issue altogether.

  • Perfect for those with Virgin Velocity Gold trial membership!

    • Which gives you what exactly?

      • I believe the 80 status credits needed to maintain gold for a year

      • Lots of benefits for something that's free, easier if you just Google. Should be the first link, hope you didn't wait 15hrs for the answer.

  • Thanks IWTF, managed to book flights on the weekend for $500 return from Canberra.
The question is now, how do I manage to get myself on a Velocity gold membership trial?

    • It's tied to Flybuys membership, and possibly was a ploy to get people to link Velocity to Flybuys, and on automatic transfer. Good luck, hope they send a trial your way.

  • Damn. I think I missed this deal

  • Yeah seems like all price bumped :(..

What's the best price to HK from Sydney 15Aug-26 Aug?
