I Made a Terrible Mistake on eBay, Can I Get out of It?

So I bought an item on eBay from someone who was located in a local suburb. The item was $10, but the postage was $13.50 so I planned on picking it up.

I only saw the listing with less than a few hours to go, so I bid without asking whether I could pickup, (the seller never said I couldn't in they add). After i win the listing, i asked the seller whether i could pickup. They responded that they had moved over an hour away and could not do pickup.

What can I do? Am i obligated to buy the item. Or can i get out of it considering that they had the wrong address.

It's usually listed in the postage options if local pickup is an option, isn't it?

If pickup was listed as an option then absolutely you should be able to get out of it, it's not your fault they listed the wrong suburb for pickup.

If pickup was not listed as an option then you either need to pay up since you agreed to buy it for the listed price + postage, or look up what the consequences of not paying are for buyers (I have no idea what they are sorry).

    • No enforceable consequences for buyers (fortunately for OP).

    • Pick up wasn't an option

If you don't want the item, then don't pay.

You think that is a terrible mistake ?

You should contact ebay and see what your options are.

    • It's really bothering me. I regret it so much.

        There there laddie.

You've plenty of life left in you to make even worse mistakes.

I don't think maybe having to pay $13.50 counts as a terrible mistake.

Try forgetting to get the olives taken off your pizza, now that's a terrible mistake, almost a tragedy in fact.

      • That's just a minor inconvenience.

Finding olives on your pizza can ruin you entire night, even the entire week as you think back to that moment of your long awaited pizza arriving and then the sheer unspeakable horror of seeing olives on it.

        I still have nightmares.

I think olives have ruined my life.

I should start a post asking who I can sue.

Olives I can handle.. You can pluck them out if necessary. But mushrooms… FFS people.

Nothing that costs $13.50 to fix can be called a terrible mistake.

    • The Challenger disaster was cheaper to fix.

    • its a huge mistake.

  • Life is so hard sometimes.

  • Years ago I considered an eBay purchase and requested pickup, which was declined. We use the same sub-post office and they must pass my house to get there!

  • There are a couple of things a seller could do if you chose not to buy, they could open a dispute with Paypal and your account gets a unpaid item penalty (a strike). Typically, you won't suffer any repercussions until your account has about 2 strikes — as sellers can actually choose an option to prevent people with 2 strikes on bidding on their auctions.

However, these blocks only last 6 months so it's not a permanent debuff to your account.

The other thing the seller can do is cancel your bid and offer a Second Chance to another bidder, effectively meaning your highest bid is cancelled and the second winning bidder can buy the item.

If you write an email response to the seller explaining your circumstances, you should be able to avoid the Dispute.

  • If the listing did not specify local pickup was available then you are locked into paying for the purchase. Ebay will have already charged the seller about $2.60 in selling fees. If you contact the seller they MAY offer to ask EBay to cancel the sale.
Otherwise best to go ahead, bite the bullet and just pay for the transaction.
If you choose to simply ignore the situation then the seller can open an unpaid item case with EBay. After waiting 4 days the seller can ask Ebay to formally cancel the transaction, refund the sale fee and record a unpaid transaction defect against your Ebay account.
Some Ebay sellers (including us) will block bids from buyers that have as few as ONE unpaid case logged against them.
