At the start you're too poor / tight to spend money on frivolous things like a car wash because you can just do it yourself

Then eventually you make and have enough that you value your own time and labour, so you're happy to pay for car washes

But then eventually, you just don't give a shit and stop getting car washes altogether and just let your nice car go to shit because what's the point.

    • +5

But then eventually, you just don't give a shit and stop getting car washes altogether and just let your nice car go to shit because what's the point.

This is when one has achieved zen.

  • +3

If you can't afford a car wash, how can you afford a car?

    • +6

      And a ship

    • +1

You said it in one. And considering the cost of a tank of petrol can you imaging the next question from OP????

  • +6

Walter White was just an average high school teacher who barely made ends meet, he and his wife ran a tight ship at home too. When he became Heisenberg, he crunched some numbers and saw a pressing need to get a car wash. I guess you can get a car wash when you become Heisenberg.

    • +1

Thats over 100 grand a week. He's going to need to do more grabbing and going to be able to afford that

      • +1

PSA: pls don't be Heisenberg, cooking meth is illegal in case anyone was wondering

  • +1

Just don't wash it. I haven't washed my car since 2010

    • You always pay someone else to get it done, right?

  • +3

Once your earning about tree fiddy

  • +8

    $201,735.47 per annum.

    • Yep. Anything over $200K should do the trick. And claim it as a tax deduction too.

    • +1

Upvoted for being the ONLY person to answer OPs question.

I think you're a little on the high side but maybe right for Sydney. Probably $120k-$130k elsewhere.

      • +1

        But no upvote?! :p

        • +1

          Wow what an oversight. Apologies.

  • +2

If you can't afford to wash the car you can't afford to own a car.

    • +4

      Technically incorrect.

      • +3

Yes, but OP is obviously not very technical.

  • +1

Just wear a bikini to wash your car and bring a large bottle with tips clearly marked on it

    Your Welcome

  • +2

If you're that poor that you have to think about this, then really you should just wash the car yourself…seriously

    • OP obviously hasnt worked that one out yet

    • In all seriousness OP, it's simple concept. If you could earn more money in the time you spent to wash your car, then of course you get someone else to wash it for you..If not, then you have to ask yourself whether you could afford that money

  • +6

Get rid of the car your ship will be less tight.

    • LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

  • +1

Collect 5c and 10c coins in a jar until you have enough to go to car wash.

  • I have always washed cars myself. From having a old cheapo Ford 1995 to BMW X6.
I have bought a good pressure cleaner and good washing products. Wash it every second weekend. Good time to spend with the spouse and have tea with friends.

  • +1

If you can not afford $3-4 to go to a DIY car wash bay then you can't afford a car…I'm guessing you don't even have TPP insurance

    • What car wash do you go to that costs $3 to $4???

      • +3

The DIY car wash bays, if you are quick you can wash your car for $2.

        • I can't see how anyone could do a decent job in such a short time.

        • +1

@John Kimble: If your car is properly waxed or have paint protection like cquartz or opticoat, a rinse down with the pressure hose and shampoo is enough.

        • @John Kimble: You do a quick rinse, switch to suds and suds it all over ($2). Time runs out. Keep using the suds you put to scrub down. Another $1 or $2 and rinse it off, all done! $3-$4 exactly

    • Maybe OP need to get rid of thier car.
Next post from OP will be
"I had an accident but could not afford car insurance. What should I do now?"

      • +3

I got a speeding fine for being 40kph over, how can I get off?

I found out Hawaii is in the ocean, what should I do?

        What should I drink?

        How do I breathe?

  • +3

Skip the automatic wash - most of them will ruin your paint.

I usually pay $20 at the local Westfield to get it done by hand while I'm doing a shop at Coles/Woolies.

If that is too steep, check Groupon as there are usually deals for hand car washes in your area.

I am definitely what you would call "low income", but a car wash once a month at <$20 is an easy thing to budget for - especially as it falls under routine car maintenance. Plus, you don't have to drive around in a dirtbox of a car - especially if you are giving someone a lift somewhere.

On the other hand, washing it yourself (if you are able to) is an easy way to save money. You just need to work out how valuable your time is vs how long it will take you. Ie: Is that $20 really that expensive if you are busy and doing it yourself would take >1 hour?

    • You're not taking this OP seriously , are you?

  • +3

I am no financial advisor, but you should be able to run the Car Wash for about 2 years, without full income.
So before you get yourself a car wash, save.

  • +2

Maybe just maybe, the op was referring to the high end car wash places upwards of $50.

I think most of the responses in here were a little too harsh without clarifying what his question really was. I am sure OP is capable of making a decision of whether to get a car washed by himself or spend $10-15 per wash.

What if the question was rephrased to what income levels would be justifiable to get one of those >$50 car washes?

    • Upvoted. Trolling is not always the answer. Always think on the other side of the story as well.

  • +1

Car wash around the corner at work - if you go into the servo first, you can get it done for $4 :)

    Car wash for me :)

    • Awesome! Which brand of servo?

      • It's an Apco branded one. The car wash in owned independently of the servo, so not sure if this helps anyone else.

But for those that live in Thomastown/Bundoora, it's an awesome deal (plus the petrol prices are always much lower, ie. $1.10 vs $1.25)

  • +2

Is this for real? - Never thought I'd hear such a ridiculous question from a person on this site. Wash it when it's dirty! Or if you don't have a hose bucket or cloth, take it into one of the many drive through or hand wash operators available or buy a Groupon ,Scoopon etc. voucher to get it detailed. GordonBennett - I will have to share this one with Facebook friends who aren't members of this site ( that's English terminology to use instead of swearing ) Unbelievable!

    • +1

You haven't delved deep enough into the forums then ;)

  • Are you F..g kidding. What sort of stupid question is that? What happended to turning on the hose and using a car wash brush or car sponge. OMG. The stupid posts we get here. Next one will be how do I wipe my ar….

  • +8

Next stupid post topic - At What Stage Can You Go to Buy Lunch Financially?

    • +1

      In about 5 minutes actually.

  • +3

Normally I would dismiss a post like this, but given the context of this forum, we are all here because we're trying to maximise our savings whilst retaining some semblance of quality in our lives.

To that end, I have developed a simple mathematical formula to declutter this thread:

Take your Hourly Wage (A), divided by the average time, in minutes, it takes for you to wash your car (B), multiplied by 100.

    • If your score is above a 1.0 Point Average, you can most assuredly afford to have someone else wash your car
    • If your score is within the 0.65 - 1 Average, you can consider having someone else wash your car, though you may need to tighten your ship as a result
    • If your score is below the 0.5 Average, you will probably have to tighten more than just your ship before even considering to have someone else wash your car

    Example:

    • [ $67.50 (A) / 60 minutes (B) ] x 100 = 112.5% - You can pay to have someone wash your car
    • [ $40.00 (A) / 60 minutes (B) ] x 100 = 66.67% - Consider tightening your ship
    • [ $25.50 (A) / 60 minutes (B) ] x 100 = 42.5% - We're going overboard boys
    • Is this what is referred to as technically correct?

    • I like this. A few issues though.

      a. You seem to have assumed, or made an oversight, that the car wash is $60.

      b. You need to take into account your fixed costs. Sure you can spend 1:1 on maids, car cleaning, etc, but at the end of the week you will having left for rent and bills. So you need to build in a "tax" to account for that stuff. For example if you earn $30 maybe you should use $20 as the yardstick, not $30 itself.

OPs post history (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/64096/nodes) is full of the hard hitting questions.

At What Stage Can You Go to Get a Car Wash Financially?
What Age Is Ok to Start Leaving Kids at Home?
Just How Much Is Enough to Have?
Right Age to Talk to My Daughter about The Birds and Bees?
Should I get a German Shepherd dog and prepare for the bills or just not get a dog?
Went on Holiday and My Cousin Whose Husband Is a Doctor, Gave Me an Embroidered Toliet Roll Holder
I helped find a guys lotto ticket. He is not talking about a reward for me. What should I do?

    • +12

Summary - OP is a classic time waster on this forum

    • +1

May be we renamed this forum to comedy, this is just plain hilarious!

    • If forums and Ozbargain didn't exist, I'm sure some people would be either dead or up against a wall cause they accidently glued their tongue to the wall.

  • Stop complaining people. You only have yourselves to blame.
Stop dignifying this troll and responding to his useless attention seeking.

    • +1

      lol the irony!

  • When it costs you more not to work the amount of time it takes to do the car washing

  • +2

When (hourly work rate) * (time to wash car properly) + (Material cost) > (Professional Car wash cost) * (potential risk of damage)

Material cost can be broken down further: (Cost of pressure washer) + Materials / Life of materials (number of washes)

  • OP should have asked for the best bargain car wash place.

  • The question is, how much do you love your car? If you do love it, then you wouldn't trust some stranger at a car wash to take proper care when washing.

  • +1

If you dont want to wash your car then just hose it on a different part of your lawn daily. wipe off the scum and dust which settled the night before. wipe down the windscreen but the rest of the car can be left as is. no need to sweat. then go back to reading ozbargain.

  • lol these forum posts are getting…

I thought this thread was about buying a car wash (ala Breaking Bad). How wrong I was! Its about how much you value your time. I couldnt be bothered bringing my hose out the front, filling the bucket, buying all the kit required so I just spend $8-10 once a month to give it a good clean at the servos (manual washing).

  • +4

Car Wash?…..I just see weather forecast for heavy rain and park outside.

  • +2

I find it cathartic to wash my cars. I don't I'd ever get someone to do it for me except if it was for difficult paint correction. It's a very relaxing thing for me to do on a nice day.

If only I found satisfaction in a clean house or office.

  • How much do you like your car? Most of the lower end car wash place is not that good. A decent detailer will run for hundreds of dollars.

If you are running a tight ship. And do actually have a time on your hand. And a place to wash it in. Just wash the car yourself.

Get the autoglym car kit for the exterior.
    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Autoglym-Bodywork-W…

Get interior shampoo (for textile seat, carpet, and roof lining) + leather balm (if you have leather on your car) + vinyl/rubber protector (for dashboard, trims, and any rubber/vinyl bits and pieces on your car)

    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Autoglym-Interior-S…
    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Autoglym-Leather-Ca…
    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Autoglym-Vinyl-Rubb…

These things is so good, you only need to wash the car every 3-6 months. (my personal experience)

With cheaper car wash places, they only wash and not wax, so the car tend to get dirty after about a week, and without wax, the paint is vulnerable to sun and other chemical damage.

    • Autoglym rep? :p

Seriously though, thank you for the recommendation. Going to try some out during the 20% off at Supercheap auto this weekend.

      • +1

No, I'm not an Autoglym rep. Just a happy customer. :)

My favorite product of theirs is Rapid Aqua Wax, make cleaning car so easy. First time I use it, I was blown away at how quickly i can clean, wax, and dry my car streak free. The finish is better than when my car is brand spanking new and it last ages before the coating wore off. Just amazing.

        P.S.
For their exterior kit; get this one if it's available near your place.
        http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Autoglym-Smart-Wash…

It's on clearance, usually 100 something dollars.

  • Im gonna start a thread :

"Should I buy a car wash"

Then depending how it goes, another one:

"How do I buy a car wash"

    • Both questions have already been answered earlier.

      Hint: Heisenberg

  • I never tell my chauffeur to was my car until I've pulled in $20k that week.

By the way, I've got $50mil to invest and thought you guys could help out!

Also, flying to Ayers Rock, but just realised I'll be flying over land. Should I cancel?

  • +2

After crunching the numbers for many hours and analysing all the data at hand I think it's fair to say OP is a troll.

    • takes one to know one.

  • If you are crunching numbers to justify the cost of a car wash, don't bother

  • With a good game plan, I can smash mine out in $3 of car wash bay time.

Grab the power soap gun, good whip around extra attention to bird crap and bugs and at the same time give the soap brush a good spray to clean out all the stones and mud left by the weekend heroes cleaning their 4x4s.

Next, the second dollar is the soap brush, but whip around nice and quick dumping as much soap all over the car as possible. That way, when the timer runs out you can still take your time and scrub away with the brush.
Last is the high pressure rinse to finish it off. Do this oncec a week, every few weeks I'll spend a few $ more and do a wax coat.

I could afford to go get it hand detailed if I wanted, but enjoy the satisfaction I get out of spending the least possible while still doing a good enough job.

    • Make sure you have good footwear. Last time I did this while whipping around almost fell on my butt… That would of been funny though.
