  • Here are the fine prints:

Promotional offer valid on new .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, or .us domain name registrations only. Promotional period expires February 29, 2008 11:59PM EST. $4.00 charge applies to the first year of registration only. The domain name will renew at $8.95 each year thereafter unless cancelled according to HostMySite.coms Terms of Service.

So basically they are getting you to buy for $4 for the first year, and then try to charge you $8.95 for the following years, hoping most people will be too lazy to change registrar…

@18Googol2 — while you are there, can you see whether there is an easy way to get he EPP code so you can transfer the domain out before the expiry? I hate it when some dodgy registrars require you to call them to obtain the EPP/authorisation code….

    • $8.95/yr isn't that expensive for domain registration.

Godaddy is $9.99/yr for renewals, and they're generally the cheapest.

      • $9.99 is nowhere near the cheapest. GoDaddy resellers can get as cheap as $6.93/year, and even then it is not the cheapest! It will only be significant if you register lots of domains though…

    • I think 8.95 usd per year is not a big deal, just a couple of dollar more. Hostmysite is a large company with good service, Im happy to stay more than 1 year.

  • Just curious.. What is the point in buying a domain name?
If I have a website can I link my website to the domain name I purchase from this website?
And it will only cost $4?
So I can have a dot com website for $4?

    • A domain name is only the address, and you still need to find a place to host it. Yes with a website, you need both a domain name and a hosting package.

  • Hey if you can get $6.93 where from as I am interested in that.

    • Well USD$6.93 figure comes from GoDaddy's Reseller Pro program where you can sell a .com/.net/.org domain names for $6.73 (+ 20 cents ICANN fee). The catch is — it costs you $199/year to be a pro reseller so the benefit is only there if you register lots of domains.

Andrew (who I think is also a regular here at OzBargain) is a GoDaddy super reseller I think, and he has set up a website to resell domains for $6.99 + 20 cent ICANN fee ($7.19 — so he makes 26 cents for every domain sold?), and it is here:

      http://getyerown.com/

I think he registered so many domains and it is cheaper for him to become a reseller. Since he has already got a reseller account, he doesn't mind passing on the savings to others.

But as I said, there are places cheaper than even the GoDaddy resellers. Australia's Domain Central for example, sell domains for $6.50 on their .com site:

      http://www.domaincentral.com/

One registrar to avoid though is EstDomains.com, who has $6.39/year for .com. These guys are usually linked with the scam/phishing/spyware sites so although they are ICANN accredited regitrars, I have actually heard forums banning people whose domain is registered with them.

  • "Godaddy is $9.99/yr for renewals, and they’re generally the cheapest."

There is a GoDaddy coupon code for $5.99/yr for renewals :)

  • this one is much cheaper $1 per month only

    • @krescent2 — I have edited out the affiliation link. Moreover, how is $1/month cheaper than $4/year?
