Used these guys before, coughed up almost a full month's payment just to get away from how bad all aspects of it were.

    • +7

Can you share more? its very cheap and lots of people saying "its bad" but hard to find more detailed reviews

      • Yeah, either it works or it doesn't?

        • +10

          not that simple.

your home terminal -> NBN access & transit network -> NBN POI -> Your ISP backhaul -> their peering node -> your destination

          during this entire process,
          1. your ISP buys bandwidth for NBN access & transit network, they could over-sell means all their client congested in their limited bandwidth.
          2. they rent POI (cheap ISP tends to fewer or even only 1 POI), means it could take a really long route before you even hit your ISP's backhaul
          3. how good is their backhaul anyway? cheap ISP tends to rent Vocus Backhaul, which isn't amazing.
          4. how many peer node do they have relation with? less peer means likely longer route to your actual destination.

          • +2

@OMGJL: They are on Vocus. Your trace route is approximately correct.

You are also default on CGNAT although you can get dynamic IP if you request it.

I had a massive problem after the 1st month with work VPN (Zscaler Melbourne). Use cloudflare internet test then figured out it was CGNAT. Got off that. Then used Zscaler tools to figure out what the problem is. Turns out download and upload is using different routes. Upload route was dropping at Vocus nodes in Sydney (why it is routing through Sydney is strange in itself) Had to escalate to AGL (person I emailed has AGL email) and the issue is basically resolved after that.

I was on Southern phone like 2 years ago and didn't have the same problem.
Didn't have the same problem on Mate or Tangerine (also Vocus).

@netjock: Don't get into the hassle of even thinking about taking their service.
My NBN has always worked fine until I came across them. Last 5 years, no issues with different providers (been churning), except them.
Took their service and every second day there was some issue or the other because of some upgrade from their end.
My internet will go down and I'll have to call them and get in touch with their tech support.
              I've left them for good.
Unless you want to make you life a misery , and spend countless hours troubleshooting why your internet isnt working , dont go with them.

I principle agree. I had a good experience in the past so went back and maybe ran into bad luck. On 12 months 100/20 for $65 so will see what happens.

      • +1

Mainly user experience/customer support related. Also none of them knew how fibre upgrades worked. Actual connectivity was not as bad but still worse than most.

    • Bad as MyRepublic?

      • Given that MyRepublic don't trade in Australia anymore, I doubt it's on that level… yet.

        • +1

          Bad as superloop custo.er support?

  • Thoughts on Southern Phone?

I've been with Superloop HFC for 3yrs now and have been very happy with the service on the 50 meg plan at $76/m with $5 lifetime discount. But I'm still running it on a 5yo Telstra router so that is also quite tempting.

I remember seeing a post recently from ABB that NBN plans were about to get a major speed upgrade across all plans… I'm wondering if this isn't the best time to be committing to a 12 month deal.

    • I have been with superloop for more than 3 years, no $5 discounts though. They sent me an email recently for free wifi router if i stay for 24 months. Maybe have a chat with them. I have free static IP with them, and their service is quite good (not so much with customer service when i first started with them, but might be different now).

      • +5

Yeah that Superloop free router offer almost made me leave. It was insulting. The offer was massively in their favour, being a cheap piece of shit for a high ongoing connection price. They clearly think I'm an idiot because I've stayed with them so long.

        • They are not the cheapest but it has been reliable so far (few years).

I didn't take their free router offer as I have my own and I have to pay for delivery. Can't be bothered. I can see that I will stay with them for the near future unless someone ABB dropped their price significantly.

      • Have been with superloop for over a year now. Fantastic service. I have my own router which is a cheap one from Amazon with wifi 6eand have been getting 1000mbps speed

      • Yeah so we're about to get 500Mb plans at current 100Mb prices. I'm gonna hold off I think. I also don't even get the gig plan show up on my address?

        • For whatever reason you have to call Southern Phone to get Gigabit HFC. Most ISPs have Gigabit HFC with online signup.

    • I got lazy with life discount too but on Exetel HFC, owned by Superloop, free static IP, 100 for $75 ($10 life discount) you can churn for discounts between the two as well, I had Superloop too, I don't get drop outs on these 2 but got bad ones on Telstra Belong so reluctant to try small providers

    • I left superloop for Leaptel HFC 1000/100 for $99 a month for first 12 months $109 afterwards. Very happy.

  • Topcashbacks has 50% cashback offer right now too. Seeing mixed reviews about Southern Phone here though.

  • Great deal. Not the best ISP.

  • +3

I signed up and there was a outage for close to a week, similiar to others, i cut my lost and moved to another.

    • I have had a number of issues with their service as well after signing up, which was super annoying. It has settled down though for now. They are not the most amazing ISP.
I'm on the 250/20 or whatever it might be for $75. It's pretty cheap for that speed for 12 months.

    • I had the same experience after signing up, but no issues since and I get the advertised speed (250mbps plan for $75) better when I was with Exetel. Cons with SP is no Ipv6 and dynamic IP which could be a deal breaker for some.

  • +1

Depends. When it works, it works when it doesn’t …well that is a fair bit of pain BUT you can mitigate that by having a backup service such as launtel to kick in those times.

FWIW prior to some works they had been amazingly stable but the upgrade was a bit of a Charlie foxtrot…good now though afaict.

    • Was the so called upgrade around start of April? That is when all these problems with Zscaler started.

      • earlier. Not sure what it was about to be honest. I'd be surprised if they are using zScaler or did you start having grief with your zScaler deployment?

        • Think I joined end of Feb 25 and it was going good until end of March. Then zScaler for work started acting up and had to go through tech support and escalated into the resolutions team at AGL.

CGNAT opt-out and IPv6 support on Southern Phone NBN? Anyone?

    • +2

You can opt-out of CGNAT. Not sure about IPv6 support though.
I am using them currently and have opted out of CGNAT. Did it through the web chat. Pretty painless.

      • +1

        No IPv6 support.

  • +1

Cant sign up, keeps saying incorrect AVC ID

  • +3

I have been with this isp for 2 months fttp, no issues whatsoever. Paying $75 for 250/20

  • +1

I went to cancel my Optus and they offered me a free modem if I stayed connected for 6 months at $74 a month 100/20. Wasn’t too bad

  • According to their docs they use PPPoE (which could be not ideal for pfSense/opnSense).
    https://www.southernphone.com.au/help/nbn/troubleshooting-yo…

According to their support they also use CGNAT for FTTP but you can opt-out for free.

    • I have been using a OPNSense F/W for my connection and can confirm it's DHCP.

      • Also confirm DHCP. PPPoE seems like old info.

      • for this particular ISP?
Then they definitely should update the docs.

UPD: just checked with their support

me: are you using PPPoE for FTTP or is it DHCP?
        support: We use PPPOE
me: is there an option to use DHCP or PPPoE is the only mechanism?
        support: We only use PPPOE

        • +1

I am on FTTP. Didn't get PPPOE details. Just put on DCHP and it is going.

    • But when you do opt out it causes your Internet to go down every few weeks for days at a time with no solution. It’s absolutely the worst.

TLDR worth switching temporarily from Superloop?

    • +3

No, Superloop have better backhaul network.

      • Does that also apply to Exetel as well?

        • Yeah the same applies to Exetel.

      • Thanks @Twix - You seem to be in the know with this kinda stuff. Why are Aussie so expensive? Is their backbaul better than Superloop or just as good?

        • +1

Aussie BB has more peering capacity, AU support, expanded to 8 offices across AU and so on. It all adds up. Some paths are better with Aussie and some are better with Superloop depending on the location.

Superloop support is based overseas so they can cut costs there.

          • +1

            @Twix: Thanks mate, much appreciated.

          • @Twix: Hey Twix. What about with Telstra nbn? Telstra seems to be most expensive but are they better than the rest in terms of backhaul and their network? Or are they overpriced rubbish?

            • @Monty1089: Telstra has good connectivity however they are overpriced. Are you using Telstra?

              • @Twix: Yes I am with Telstra fttp on the 100/20 nbn plan. I want to change with someone obviously cheaper but good network performance. I do want the next speed tier of 250mbs. What would you suggest? Right now I pay $110 a month with Telstra.

                • +1

@Monty1089: Buddy Telco 1000/50 $99/m ongoing. They don't have 250/25. Buddy Telco is using the Aussie BB network.

                  Leaptel 250/25 $89/m for 12 months ($104/m ongoing).
                  1000/50 $99/m for 12 months ($114/m ongoing).

                  Superloop 250/25 $85/m for 6 months ($99/m ongoing).
                  1000/50 $99/m ($109/m ongoing).

                  Cycle between them.

nbn speed tiers in 5 months time.

Old Speed Tiers New Speed Tiers
                  100/20 500/50
                  250/25 750/50
                  1000/50 1000/100
                  • +1

                    @Twix: Thanks for this.

Buddy Telco it is. That plan is crazy good. I can save $10 a month from Telstra and my speeds could be up to 8 times faster. I have been ripped off for too long now.

                    • @Monty1089: All good. What model router do you own?

                      • @Twix: I have the standard Telstra router that they gave. We have 3 actually: The frontier modem, Smart modem gen 1 and smart modem gen 3. We actually use the gen 1 but the others are boxed up.

                        • +1

@Monty1089: Gen 3 should be the fastest. Factory reset the router if you don't get max speeds.

                          • +1

@Twix: Thanks. I have checked we still have the gen 3 and it is still brand new in the box.

I will sign up tomorrow now. Cheers for your help.

      • I think they have switched to Superloop backhaul. My traceroutes all passthrough superloop.

I'm on Southern Phone through AGL.

        • That would be good if so. Can you please post a trace with your IP address redacted?

          • @Twix: Note: hops 2-4 are not my devices. They must be the something on the Southern Phone side.
I wouldn't be surprised if 10.0.0.1 starts conflicting with some home private networks.

That's a fancy way of saying you're too lazy to do your own research.

      • +2

This ain't easy for us non churners, doubly hard to look into some things if you're time poor too

In my uni days I would have been in the know. Now as a dad I just need my time back and not to make life harder over small things

  • Do these guys have PoP in Melbourne?

    • +2

      Sydney PoP.

      • Weird considering AGL that owns them has majority of their employees and operations here. They have their registered head office in Sydney with like 2 floors.

  • im on HFC but cant see any options faster than 100/20, am i doing something wrong?

  • Im with Southern Phone in Sydney through AGL on 100/20 for $65 for 12 months, not halfway yet…so happy to sit waiting for September to tick around.
I havent had any issues with them and speed/ping is always good for myself, but of course cant speak about the 1000/50 speed.

Most providers I have seen offer that speed or similar and then advertise its typical evening speed after the $$/speed amount, are vastly less….

But no issues for myself using Southern Phone on FTTP

    • they are helpless when you have issue.

      • Isn't just about every provider with cheap plans? 😁

        • Occom and abb are pretty they solving the issues pretty fast.

  • Thank you for postings but shipping

  • Has anyone submitted an order? I had an issue with incorrect AVC number then on the final review screen it keeps saying connection date is today even though I set a future date. Also, it keeps saying looks like something gone wrong.

    • +1

Yep, that's a good synopsis for what you have in store.

    • Did you manage to get through?

  • +1

When it works it's good. When you need to contact support, hang on for a very long ride. We got a full dropout. Called them up, went through 8000 steps,"Have you checked your washing machine water is spinning in the right direction?" (well maybe not that, but as useless as). Pulled out an old router, old cable and still couldn't make it work. Finally, it was working. She said she had changed something at their end and hung up the call. That's 45 minutes plus I will never get back.

Next, intermittent outages, proven by ping tracer. Same BS, different rep. Modem is the same as router apparently, for HFC. I think not. Have I checked nothing is plugged into my ADSL slot? Got pushed up the chain, then pushed up again and finally got to speak to an Australian. He changed a few things at his end, said the signal was low but not lower enough to get nbn involved and it has been better. Not perfect, but better. Not as many dropouts.

    • +1

I found superloop support to be as, if not more useless. On hold for 45 mins then auto disconnect. When you do get someone and you push them beyond the basic reboot modem or try a different cable advice you go on hold for an expert who you have to re explain the issue again and then gone through the same troubleshooting.

      • I agree with daabido- super loop support is a million times better. I spent probably ten hours trying to deal with support for southern phone. They are absolutely the worst!!

        • Similar experience with SL to the point where i dumped them for leaptel and it was like coming out of the stone ages. And I naively thought optus was the worst.

  • Southern Phone has been 10% faster than Superloop for me. Neither have ever had a drop out, only a couple of NBN planned outages with Superloop over 18 months.

  • I think AGL is using Southern Phone. I won't use them even if they pay me.

  • -1

NBN co is the biggest piece of shit company in oz!

I live on a street where everyone has fibre FTTP, but because my townhouse is called a "unit 1", the spastics at NBN think I need strata approval and application!

There is no phone number to call, no email that they will reply to!

Everything is based on their dog shit website! So when I call an isp to get the fibre upgrade, I'm told "we can't do anything unless the nbn website says you're eligible"!

As a result, I've been stuck on 50mbps speeds!

    • You have to talk with your building management.

      • You're missing the point. The NBN address database is often wrong, listing houses as though they are units. Even though your house is the only building on the block and has never been units.

    • There is no phone number to call, no email that they will reply to!

That's because NBN Co are a wholesaler and do not work with consumers.

You need to work with your RSP who are the NBNs customer to have it resolved.

If your RSP is unable to help then change to a better RSP like Aussie, Leaptel or Lunatel

    • Call up Launtel or Leaptel asking for a review. How many townhouses are there?

  • Cannot see the 1000/50 offer - home is HFC so should be able to support this speed

    • I wouldn't use Southern Phone in Perth. Southern Phone has higher latency from Perth to Sydney.

Call up Southern Phone if you still want this deal.

      • Ah right I thought they had a PoP here in WA - all good

  • +1

These guys were awful when I was with them, once every few weeks I’d be without internet for at least 36 hours. I have fttp and was on the 1000 down plan. I would never ever ever recommend these guys. It took me hours and hours trying to get them to fix my internet each time. After three instances I escaped and will never go back.

My advice, stay away. Stay far far away!!

    Edit: I’m in Perth.

  • Superloop is the best

    99$ 1000mbps plan

Connecting speed always 800 mbps plus.

    Zero buffer

    Never had a single issue.

Only problem is, if u want to cancel and switch.
You need to notify them 30 days before.

So try to do it on or a day before monthly cycle.
So that u only pay for next month full 30 days.

  • Southern Phone was horrible as an ISP for the short period I was with them. Was extremely painful when they bought up MyNetFone and migrated me over for that last month I was living at my old townhouse.

I considered myself lucky to be moving in with my now wife in her new townhouse which had HTTP.
