Ah Regaine, you've done it again.

  • Is this the same as minoxidil? I've been using this for about a year now.

    • does it work?

      • +4

I don't really know to be honest..

I definitely think something is happening but I can't tell whether it's like a more even balding pattern or that the hair looks thicker.

I feel given the (small) cost, it is still worth a "shot" for potentially working.

        • +2

Just buzz it dude, girls like it ;)

      • It does not works to everyone.I had use it for 2 years and nothing improve.( I try something else ).

    • Yeah they both contain minoxidil. Some people prefer Regaine as generic brands may cause scalp itchiness.

      • Thanks.

If it's the same thing as ocoolio suggests, then I see no reason to buy this at 4 months supply for $69, because the one I linked can easily be had for $30-31 (2 months supply, i.e. $60-62 for 4 months supply).

Though it makes me wonder why the generic bands cause scalp itchiness while Regaine doesn't..

    • It's exactly the same thing so buy the cheapest you can, there is no patent any more.

    • Want to save even more money http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kirkland-Minoxidil-5-Extra-Streng…
      approx $95 for 12 months

  • does this stuff actually work? i ended up just shaving my head and never looked back

    • No idea. I've used hair-a-gain and so far it has been pretty effective. Using Regaine at the moment but only 1 bottle down so can't really see the effects yet. I've used the one @illumination mentioned but haven't really seen any significant gain.

    • Replaced the hair with a goatee and sunglasses yet?

      • +1

lol no sunglasses but had a goatee before i shaved the head ;)

    • It works for hereditary-caused baldness, not other types (stress, chemo, etc). It takes time to work (a few weeks at least) and it will stop working once you stop using it.

  • +2

Will this help me with my facial hair?

    • +1

      Was curious about that too.

      • I bought some once and I'm pretty sure it says somewhere to wash it off your hands after applying as you'll start increasing growth on there? I'm almost sure I read somewhere that minoxidil (the active agent in regaine) was used in decreasing blood pressure but when people started taking it they found they'd have abnormal hair growth in many places. So this is just anecdotal but looks like a possibility?

—-edit seems that I may be incorrect based on below. Apologies mate.

        • the blood pressure tablets are monoxidine / physiotens, i have never heard of the hair stories and google only found one story about hair loss with this medication.

          edit seems someone already commented

wondering if i could grow a unibrow with this

        • @juki:

Minoxidil was originally an experimental topical antibiotic in the vet world, had a bonus side effect.

        • @womble: so wouldnt it create some kind of future resistance for the users?
I just wanted to point out that minoxidil and monoxidine are different.

        • @juki:

No it's just a topical antibiotic, not linked to any form of resistance and it's not used anymore anyway so even if bugs became resistant to it, we don't use it anyway, and was only used in dogs/cats previously (BTW I'm a Human Doc rather than Vet).

I would suggest it wasn't a very successful antibiotic as it's not used anymore.

    • +1

Yes, minoxidil will make any hair - head or body - stronger.

  • I have been using the Regain - Extra Strength since May 2017 and I can tell you it is working. It was so itchy when I start using it, but then after 1 month, the itchiness is gone and I can see the hairs start to growing back. It has been nearly 3 months now and my bald spot is about 60% gone (it was big spot on top of my head tho).

  • +1

Currently have a healthy head of hair but the ozbargainer in me wants to stockpile this for later!

    • +5

I've pulled my hair out so I can buy and use this.

      • Anything for a bargain!

  • +4

    Just so you know.

It takes around 2-3 months for the effects to really show in terms of hair growth.

If using for the first time, the first month generally will have the itches, as the hair follicles do their thing, you may even notice some hair loss. But that's all normal.

Finally, it will work as long as you use it, once you stop, you'll start losing the hairs again.

And for some reason it does not seem to work for the facial hair mainly only for scalp, and I suggest avoiding the face, to avoid irritation and rash. Note: this is based off some of my patients feedback.

    AND as a pointer.
Be careful about Ashley & Martin, their products work. Why? Cause they use a compounded mixture of about 7% minoxidil (vs the 5% in regaine) but they charge thousands for consult and the product.

EDIT: this is a great price for a branded product.

    • +2

So you are saying once you start basically its needed for a lifetime? What if you had a small bald spot and you stopped using it would it go back to how it was or would the spot get bigger?

Is there a reason you lose hairs once you stop using the product?

      • +2

Unfortunately, Regaine isn't a cure for balding. It's a temporary fix. Like any medication, the effect will gradually fade, a few months after you stop.

Meaning once you stop, you won't see new hair growth over the balding area, you will see it stagnate in growth, then hair starts to thin out, and back to that bald spot you would have had naturally (that you would have had if you didn't use the product at all).

So in reality, you are temporary delaying the inevitable.

    • The 1st month isn't hair loss, it's shedding. All hair sheds as part of the growth cycle; it just speeds up that part of the cycle at the exact area you apply the minoxidil.

  • If your going bald, your going bald. Honestly don't waste your money on this and just accept it. Shaved heads are attractive, just be a man.

    • boom

  • I prefer finasteride- it has the bonus that the wife knows I can't be cheating on her

    • But she's not getting any action either ;)

      • He's married, neither of them are.

  • I would recommend getting non-branded ones from eBay. Costo sells the Kirkland ones so lot of Americans re-post it anywhere in the world through eBay
That's what I'm ordering as well and it's a fraction of this price.

    • This is a wild guess based on some things I know about other products but you can probably buy the active ingredient yourself for almost nothing at close to 100% concentration. It will come in a clear plastic container with no marketing on it, just a label.

      • This is a wild guess based on some things I know about other products but you can probably extract the base chemical elements from material you can find for free ;-)

  • So any issues with this stuff from long term use?

Touch wood I have no hair issues but would be interesting to know.

  • If you want your hair thicker , have a try ( DOVE Men fortifying shampoo for Thick & Strong with CAFFEINE + CALCIUM. )made in usa.
But not easy to find it .
I had use it & it works .

    • +1

DOVE Men fortifying shampoo for Thick & Strong with CAFFEINE + CALCIUM.

How much of it do you have to drink?

      • Yes , you can drink & add some sugars if you prefer…. LOL..

  • Can I use this to prevent hairloss?

    • As I know is only make your hair thicker ( not easy break ).
At the mean time I am waiting for other brand shampoo arrive from usa which order online.( will update if it works. ).

  • It works if you take a tablet called Finasteride. Google "Finasteride minoxidil".

The combination of these two is what Ashley and Martin provide basically, but they charge thousands for it. You need to goto the doc and get a prescription for Finasteride, but it works in that combo.

Do some research on those two, heaps of info out there.

As stated above, it can take months before anything noticeable, and you will probably only grow back 20-30% or maintain what you have. Finally, you have to keep up the routine, or else you will go back to where you started.

  • Seriously you wimps

if your going baldy your denying the inevitable

    start buzzing!

  • The Kirkland foam is about half this price on eBay, except it ships from the states and I'm not sure if that's gonna be a problem because it's an aerosol and might not be allowed to be shipped overseas? Does anyone know if this is the case? Cheers
