Great deal in my opinion from Telstra. Unfortunately I am on contract until next year.

It's quite misleading how they are now advertising Apple Music as an inclusion in plans, particularly on 24 month contracts. The reality is you only get a 6 month free trial.

      • +1

I recontracted late last year from a previous BYO deal and it was advertised as 6 months but I got 12 months. Anyone else experience the same?

        • Some plans do have 12 months but AFAIK there is no 12 month contract that has 12 month Apple Music.

      • +3

Too true, Telstra aren't as skilled as OzBargainers with the T&Cs:

All new and existing Telstra customers with a consumer plan can claim a complimentary 6 month
Apple Music membership with data-free streaming.

        Simply follow these 3 steps:

        Log in to My Account
In the "Plans & Usage" tab, select your" Mobile" service
Click the" Add-ons" tab and add Apple Music
Your trial will automatically renew to a $11.99/month membership on your service.

Apple Music membership offers from Telstra are not available on business, enterprise mobile
services. Membership offer for new Telstra Apple Music customers only.

I have recently recontracted and got the medium plan for $50 ($20 discount) which give 15gb of data. All I did was chat to them online and politely asked if they could do a better deal as the medium plan suited me more.

    • Yes, I did exactly this as well. I did it via online chat, asked for the 15GB for $70 to be discounted to $50 / month, they said no problem.

      • They weren't able to go lower?

      • +3

I'm dealing with them online now and they won't go lower than $60 for 15gb.

        • I haven't been able to get them to budge at all

        • @Mort: would this be a good idea to go with telstra resellers in comparison? or telstra is better when you have foxtel, etc as per packaging products

        • sign up for free as an amway vip and use telstra.com/amway simonly offer for $52 a month 15gb (so they can do it if they choose)

        • @srhardy: You have to contract for 24 months. The way included data is increasing, in 12 months, this may look like a bad deal

      • You don't happen to remember who you chatted to?

        • +3

          From my chat script

          Joseph Christian:
How about I give you 15GB of data allowance for just $50 per month. This includes unlimited calls and SMS/MMS already with Data free music streaming plus 6 month Apple Music membership, exclusive to Telstra mobile customers.

        • @misa: Thanks that is awesome! Do you have a reference number that they can check?

        • @mitch21:

Sorry, no mention of a reference number.

      • +2

maaaaaaaaaan. I asked the 12GB for $40 with utter politeness , but couldn't get it.

        • +4

Make sure you are chatting with disconnections, assuming you are already with Telstra…I managed to get 20GB for $60 a few months ago

        • +2

          @petemod: I just got 10GB for $40 which I'm happy with.

        • @mitch21: I shall aim for this

        • @sssbp:

I am happy to take 5gb for 3$0

        • +1

@ghostdom: if it's $3 then count me in.

        • @petemod: $70 gets me 25gb

    • Just on this, negotiating with the chat support… I'm on the Telstra $40 Prepaid plus (3GB day + 3GB Night). I know that Amaysim is doing $30 for 5GB anytime, with the other inclusions as the same. Do you guys reckon, I'll be able to negotiate to something closer to the Amaysim deal with Telstra?

    • I just did the same. If you do it via chat, go to the disconnection team. Sales don't have the ability to do it (I tried twice).

      • How do I get to disconnections? Is there a special menu to reach them?

      • Yep worked for me! Got 15gb for $50. The disconnections option is under mobiles on a plan in the chat screen.

  • +1

Yes Telstra are finally catching up ….same as what I get from optus for $40 but now Telstra calls are unlimited …….. Optus has free day sharing SIM …..I think Telstra is $5 per month.

    • +1

maybe optus is catching up with speed and coverage?

      • +4

If it's like their broadband offering, I would say no, they continue to oversubscribe the pipes.

    • +1

I don't think Optus do that anymore, last I checked, you need compatible plans to data pool, you can't just get a SIM.

  • Anyone know if these sim only plans are usually eligible in the NRL pass that telstra usually gives free to mobile customers at the start of a season? I'm guessing since there is a 12 month lock in yes, maybe not if it was just month to month?

    • +1

I got this exact deal Oct last year (nearly end). $50/12g/unlimited national & international calls & txt. All you need to do is chat online. You may try to talk it down to $40.

    • +1

There is a 10$ Valued Customer credit applied for me because I use them as an ISP. It will come to 40$ if you are already using Telstra Broadband.

      • I have broadband with them for years but they couldn't do better than $50. Maybe they can now

  • +13

    nowadays….$50 is quite expensive

    • +7

Yep the inclusions are getting better but prices are creeping up, the sweet spot would be more around the $25-$30 mark with something like 5Gb and 1000 minutes.

    • +1

I only ever pay $30 Telstra Prepaid grandfather Freedom plus plans….$50 is expensive. You can get a new phone with that price not a flagship though

  • does anyone reckon this is "as good as it's going to get" with telstra….. or will the release of iphone8 boost competitiveness?? i am currently off-contract and paying $70/mo for 15gb BYO sim. i am not going to port away from telsra, so i am wondering if i should jump into a contract now or wait…??

    • +4

probably better off getting something like this then buying the iPhone 8 outright when it's released

    • How long have u been with Telstra?

      • 5 years maybe?

        • Are you still sure Telstra is the only carrier for you? You pay a premium for it

        • @cloudy:

yes. the coverage and data speeds are excellent, and in any case my boss reimburses me for the cost of it.

        • +2

          @dannnnn:

if that's the case who cares about the cost, lol.

    • +1

Get onto the Disconnections live chat. You might be able to ask for a $20 loyal customer discount, but they'll probably ask you to recontract.
But you shouldn't have an issue if you want to recontract again if/when you want to on a higher plan.

    • hell yes! $50 15gb. $70 20-25gb

  • Hmmm.. currently pay $40 for 7.5GB, plus data share my partners 12GB.. now to procrastinate over $10/m for a few days!

    • Similar price/plan here. Thinking it might be worth negotiating with them online to do it for $40…

      • That's what I'm trying to do now…

    • I recontracted last week got the $50 plan for $40 with loyalty discount , just tried live chat to get same price with extra GB and they couldnt do it , I had to pay the extra $10to get 12GB- I just stuck with 8GB for $40

      • I guess if you've just re-contracted then there isn't any incentive for them to do it again for less margin.

  • How much time do you have left on contract? You should jump on the phone/live chat and renegotiate :)

    • +4

I have 8 months left but I called up and they upgraded me to this 12GB plan without termination fees. I did a chat and called up to confirm 3 times so I have the evidence if Telstra charge me(Chat transcript and email from Telstra)

      • +1

        A true ozbargainer. Well done!

      • Were you just on a byo plan without a phone repayment? You can changed Telstra plans early without any fees if there is no phone repayment contract attached to the plan.

  • +2

If you want a good plan, get it now, before the new iPhone comes out in September. This is the telco's way to contract everyone before the new big device release. Then have them break contract early and give them a small fortune to do so.

Optus also has 25% plan fee's.

  • +3

i wish they have another option (half of everything), $25 for 6GB
    then i will switch over.

    • Right on.

    • Give them a call, you never know your luck.

    • premium service or not it should be competitive enough if they decide to keep more customers

    • "i wish they have another option (half of everything), $25 for 6GB
      then i will switch over."

Good luck with that. Your calculation seems to assume that the whole monthly fee is a variable based on the data included. In reality, the included data is just a part of the variable component of the monthly price. The monthly price also has a fixed component.

  • Plan is eligible for Data sharing as well.

    Critical Information Summary

    Information about the service
Your Go Mobile Plus BYO Online plan is for a post-paid mobile
phone service. You must continue to meet the eligibility criteria
    to receive this plan.
It gives you access to our network, a mobile phone number,
lets you make and receive calls, send and receive messages,
and access mobile data. Your plan allows you to share mobile
data between other eligible plans on the same account

  • what is data share? I heard it so many times… can anyone guide me?

    • +1

you pay $5 per month for a data only sim that shares your plans data.

      How does data sharing work?

    • +1

It allows you to share your data allowance between all mobiles on the same account. For example I two mobiles with a 15GB allocation which means we have a pool of 30Gb to be shared between the two mobiles on the account. There is no charge for this.

However there is a monthtly charge if you get a sim specifically for datasharing for $5, without having to have a sim only plan that costs more.

      • If i sign up this 12gb/$50 offer, can I share date with my other prepaid number?

        • if u sign up for this offer, u take the option to purchase a data share sim.. they will send you an additional sim with new number… u dont combine with other prepaid numbers…

      • Getting them to sell you a 5 dollar data share sim in the thing though. They dont want to.

        • not sure what you are saying there…

every new sim only plan, mobile on a plan, or a tablet on plan i've signed up for i've had the option to select a data share plan (whether the basic $5 one or options for ones with more data)

  • I've been looking to go back to Telstra after the company switched us all over to vodafone… this is very tempting

  • +2

I was on the previous Mx contract of 5gb/month. I used online chat to upgrade. Thanks OP great post.

    • me too, international calls is just a bonus though. It's all about the 12GB data for me

  • This will get me off Boost; thanks OP!

    • Same. I am needing better regional coverage.

      • +2

Hey bud, just so you're aware, you won't see better coverage from Telstra vs Boost.

My understanding is that some 4GX bands are throttled on Boost, but footprint is identical. It's not like Aldi where regional coverage was rubbish.

        Reference: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/boost_mobile

The service is provided over Telstra's full 3G & 4G networks. Boost Mobile have full, unrestricted access to the Telstra network in terms of coverage. Boost customers, however, do not have access to Telstra's full 4GX data speeds and have restrictions on 4G Speeds (up to 100Mbps) as well.

        • Bugger.
Will test next time I am at Mount Surprise.

Also would be nice to receive a tax invoice for a change.

        • +1

@THE FLUFFY ONE: Haha yeah - I have to buy my recharges at the supermarket so I can claim them back through work, which is just a pain!

  • +2

I've been looking at joining telstra for a while.. comparing plans etc. so i just signed up to this deal yesterday, after being with Optus for 10+ years. I was told by the telstra rep that its actually 14gb of data not 12gb by reading the bottom of the mx plan it says +2gb data by signing up by 4th of Sept. I've double checked but this could be misleading!

now I've tried to get more out of them by numerous amounts of live chats considering optus are offering me $30 a month for $15gb cause the mrs is still with Optus…. but telstra would not budge that's the best deal they could do. I'm still unsure if I really need all that data coming from $40 and getting 10gb from optus

    • +7

Not so much the data, but the consistency and speed at which it is delivered.

Telstra is much better a service than Optus, and I say this as an Optus customer.

    • +1

I am in the exact same boat. Optus for 16years. Ported out to take advantage of the yomojo deal.. Now after the yomojo disaster have been checking out Telstra and I think for the $10 difference I'm willing to give Telstra a go

      • I see everybody getting the $70 m plan for $50, with $20 discount.. so that seems the way to go, i just got in contact with telstra through chat. and as i thought it's only 12gb of data in the plan… which i was mislead i was told 14gb!

        • +1

EDIT above called telstra disconnections and they Confirmed it IS 14gb .so the plans 12gb + 2gb signing uo before 4th of sept.

the $70 plan with $20 discount so $50 is better anyway haha.

        • @humanpudding:

          for 12 months or 24?

I don't want to sign up to anything for 24 months

  • Is the extra 2gb permanent?

  • Just tried talking online salesperson down to $40/month with no cigar unfortunately.

    • Damn. Current telstra customer?

      • Yep tried that, both mobile and home broadband customer. I didn't bother going to the disconnections team though, that's one option. Seems as though when it's an online only offer they can't make any adjustments. But that could just be fluff.

        • Probably getting inundated right now, hence not budging

        • Yeah no luck here either, wouldn't budge :/

        • I managed to get $40 per month. Got lucky I guess…
