Great deal in my opinion from Telstra. Unfortunately I am on contract until next year.

    • Doesn't amaysim use the Optus network?

  • What is the best number to call Telstra on. Pardeep on online chat couldn't offer me any better deals and gave me a 1800 number but number is wrong.

  • Paying (or paid for 1 year in advance) $20 a month for 10gb data, unlimited calls and sms, with Kogan. How can you lose?

    • +2

      because it's not Telstra

      • For $20, coming from Vodafone, paying $10 less, for over twice the data… I'll take it.

        • Depends on your circumstances :)

  • thanks for the head up - i just got the $70 plan for $50 per month on online chat as suggested in the comments. i was already on a $50 plan out of contract for 12gb and this refreshes my apple music for free for 6 months so worked out for the best!

  • Chatted online under disconnections category, advised I was looking at Optus $40 15gb plan and asked if they had anything suitable, was offered BYO Large plan 15gb for $50 which is was perfect, thanks OP

  • Im still in contract with telstra at 95/month (got a handset at start of contract). Have about 5 months left and will be looking to go to a cheaper BYO, has anyone had success negotiating in these circumstances?

    7 gigs
    Unlimited talk

    • Yep, was on same plan I think with 8 months left but had to pay out handset (still cheaper in long run for me)

  • wow it is hard work to get any better deals. No luck with online chat. No luck with calling main 1 800 number and then transferred to disconnections who was helpful but didnt offer anything better (and she had no idea of this 12GB $50 plan until I told her) I am currently on $50 Plan with no contract with 5GB of data and was trying to get more data on $40 contract.

  • Just negotiated 18.5GB for $50/m. Not sure if it helps that I am already on a SIM only plan and not locked into my contract anymore. Had a nice operator, and also had Optus open in another window haha.

Operators name was Om if it helps anyone!

    • Damn lucky… Negotiated 15gb for $60 only a few days ago :(

  • Can anyone please comment on mobile internet coverage on Telstra, I know Telstra has the best network, but I want to make sure before I tie myself with 12 months contract.

I am with Virgin for years now, but about six months ago, I am experiencing problems with their network. I take train to work from Sutherland to Townhall on a daily basis, and between Hurstville and Central station, I get really shitty internet reception, although My phone shows 3-4 bars of 4G reception. I tried Optus prepaid, tried another phone. But still the same problem. I would be grateful if someone can let me know their experience with Telstra on the same train line.

    • +1

Not sure why this was negged?

Most likely due to congestion. I had the same problem with optus in Perth on the trains. I would go get a prepaid sim with Vodafone and telstra and see what you think. Vodafone was brilliant for me on the train and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg :)

      • Thanks, mate, appreciate your input :)

  • Using the 24x7 app I just got 15gb unlimited calls and sms for $50.00 on a 12 month contract

    • how

      • Go to "Help & support" click on "24x7 Chat" then "launch 24x7 chat", in the drop down select prepaid mobile in the next select disconnection then "start chat"

Tell them that you are looking at the optus $40.00 15gb plan. They will offer you the new $50.00 12 gb tell them it cost $10.00 more for less gb. They should then offer you the $70.00 plan with $20.00 discount per month.
Well that how it worked for me
        Good luck

        • thanks man!

        • What happens to unused prepaid credit?

Edit: covered further down. Unused credit Is added to your postpaid account

        • they discount $10 for the MX plan for me! $40 for the 12gb! thanks man!

        • @imahapyboy:
Great news, Im happy that it worked for you as well.

        • Thanks also. Worked a treat.

        • @OzBargin:
          Thats good news.
Im happy only $5.00 more than my old plan and 13gb extra

        • @imahapyboy: How,d you manage that mate? They refused when I asked last week.

        • @Borrie: I asked them to discount $20 for the $70 plan to compare with optus, they said they can only do $10 discount, so I asked them to discount $10 on MX plan, and she said OK :)

        • @imahapyboy: Sounds awesome man, gave it another shot today and got knocked back again. Will try mentioning Optus now though.

          Still no luck 😭

  • Just tried to get it for $40 for over an hour and sent them links to the Vaya offer.
Still didn't work and they reckon they aren't in the business to price match competitors.

  • Wow great deal, and what upsets me about this deal is just a little over 2 months ago I went on 24x7 chat and asked if they can better my $70 BYO mobile plan and they said sorry we cannot help you.

I decided to jump ship and got a Kogan $250/365 day (averages to $20/month) plan on Vodafone network and I have to say I am impressed with coverage and speed.

One way I am upset that telstra could not offer me anything better, another glad they rejected me as at the end of the day I am saving $30/month..

    • Vodafone is great now, I have to go with the telstra for work as no other option where I travel for work :(

  • I'm on BYO 90 plan that's advertised at 20gig per month but i'm getting 26 gig per month

  • I've had no luck with sales, how do you get to live chat disconnect? Asked to be put through to disconnect? I've left telstra mobile a while back as they wouldn't budge on my plan so I went with Optus and haven't really mind it. I'm currently in Darwin and have notice telstra coverage is better than Optus once you leave the cbd.

My wife on the other hand doesn't want to leave telstra so I may get this for her.

I do like the post above about the $75 iPhone 7 deal.

    • Go live chat, and then the drop down choose disconnections.

  • Damnit just signed up for $60 per month for 15gb (disconnections special)..

  • +1

September last year i got the Telstra $50 MX plan with 8GB data and $20 credit each month for $30.

I spoke to telstra support today and they gave me an extra 4 gb to my plan. So 12gb for $30/mo.

    my contracts almost up too!

  • Maan! I literally jumped on the BYO $50 under a week ago. Is there some cooling off period so that I can get this plan?

    • On the byo plans you can normally just move between plans. Ask them what they can do

      • Interestingly I didn't realise that I was on a casual plan so I was able to move, there was some 60 day block which they bypassed, shweeet! 9GB to 12GB, before I was on 11GB for $60. No chance of a loyalty -$10 though, haha.

  • Great deal !! ported both my numbers across from Vodafone..

  • If you don't need Apple Music, Telechoice $48/13gb a month is better value.

    • Does Telechoice use the full Telstra network?

      • I've done some digging at Telechoice uses 'Telstra Wholesale', which is not as good as Telstra. I know this because my employer changed to Telstra wholesale for the substantial savings, but we reverted back to Telstra after 2 months due to unstable reception, including daily dropouts and slow internet speeds, compared with Telstra.

They were a rough 60 days I tell you… rough.

  • -1

Based on the live chat convo I just had, 15gb for $50 MX BYO is getting close to be widely available.

  • Just gave it a shot but they say i still have to pay handset fee. I would save about 20 bucks over the 4 months If I swap from my plan to this plan. Might just hold out till end of contract for more leverage.

If you swap plans within telstra is there any downtime with your connection? Or is it just accounting changes and no disconnection/ reconnection?

    • just accounting changes, done this many times

  • -1

Although Telstra has better coverage, I'll stick to my $40 15gig,which I pay $27 p/m after discounts

    • Who is that with?

      • Optus

      • Not Telstra

    • Interested to know how you get it at $27 per month, I am on $44/month with another optus plan

      • Home internet optus = $10 off + student discount =10%

  • +3

I have some new information which I feel has not been mentioned before.
If you are currently a Telstra Pre-Paid customer it is possible to change over to to this plan without changing SIM cards.

Also, as a bonus, if you are like me and have recently recharged, the credit that you have left i.e $40/recharge -minus days used. Will be credited to your account.

I'm just on 24/7 chat now to see if I can negotiate 15gb for $50.

Hope this is helpful to someone.

    • Let me know how you go. I'm also on prepaid but would prefer $40 for 10gb.

    • I was hoping that would be the case for Boost as well, but have just been told I need a new SIM :(

  • +2

Guys who managed to grab 15gb for $50.00 plan, are you already Telstra customers?

I tried my luck on chat but as non telstra customer, they can only offer $10 porting discount ($60 for 15GB) and No discount on $50 (which is already discounted).

    • I'm interested to know the answer to this too. Looking to move my wife from the original Woolies (Optus) prepaid plan to something on 4G with a bit more data and unlimited calls (ideally including international) and obviously looking for the best deal.
Kogan are cheap but don't have the international calls included.
Seems most of the users posting here are already with Telstra.

    • I was offered the $50 for 15GB when I mentioned the current Optus offer ($40 for 15GB) to the disconnections, they won't budge on the $40 for 12GB though… and yes I am currently with them on a previous MX BYO deal for $40 for 7.5GB, but I don't think that is a necessity.

    • I think most of them are, I tried (coming from Optus) and they couldn't do it. Instead said it's $15 extra per month for 3gb more (to make total of 15gb a month). I also got offered the same as your last sentence.

    • Yes I'm an existing Telstra customer. I also went through the Disconnections team.

You can try mentioning the Optus $40 for 15gb plan maybe…

  • I spent about half hour on chat to get eventually be promised 15gb/$50 when the number finally ports over. See what happens I guess.

Have the chat transcript and reference number saved anyway.

    • So you're obviously not with Telstra but still got that deal? I tried but no dice. Can you PM or post your chat transcript at all. Cheers

      • I am happy to PM you in a few days after I actually get it applied. I don't want to be spreading information till I actually get it :) Please remind me in a few days?

        A snippet looks like this:

R*****: Approximately when will my number be ported over? do you know?
Abhijeet: Thank you for this R*****
Abhijeet: It will take 24-48 hours to port out.
Abhijeet: And once it done, I will add extra 3 gb.
R*****: okay awesome, thank you very much
R*****: can I please get a reference number for this conversation?
        Abhijeet: My Pleasure R*****.

        • No problem, will do. The reference number will be the biggest help. Thanks.

        • @Bautista:

No worries, just let me get mine and I'm happy to share :)

        • @Bautista:

          INT 1-1225321527711

        • Thank you. I'll see how I go :)

        • If it doesn't apply you just live chat with ref number.

  • No-go with the 15g/$50 combo. Tried both sales and disconnections departments. Was told it 'can be applied' to EXISTING Telstra customers. Still a good deal, but I won't be able to use the $10 per month porting credit, nor the $10 per month loyal customer credit (have Telstra Broadband).

    Jonathan at 13:22, Jul 27:
In regards with the $50 for 15GB it is actually a case to case basis.
    Jonathan at 13:22, Jul 27:
In which "it can be applied" but only for existing customer
    Jonathan at 13:23, Jul 27:
This is because the account is going to be assessed.

  • 5 minutes on disconnections chat and got 15GB/$50. Existing customer.

  • Any advice on whether I could secure this since my contract still has 20 months (Normal 3GB Medium plan with handset $75/m)?

    • Looks like it doesn't matter, you just need to pay out your device!
$680 upfront but it's $25/m cheaper for quadruple data and my contract ends in 12 months not 20 :)

  • Currently on casual plan $45/month, Anyone got luck getting the $50/month mx plan discounted?

  • After about 2hrs, trying two separate times through the 24x7 chat, eventually got an upgrade. Still $50/month, but instead of 10GB/month, now have 15GB with free calls + OS to 10 countries, they are: China, India, UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, USA and Canada. Whatever system Telstra have the 24x7 chat people use in their backend, but the first chat offered me 12GB+4GB, which only went through as 12GB in the end. So had to chase it up again. Was a hell of a struggle but got there in the end. Still would've preferred another 5GB, just to round it off though…

  • $70 byo (15gig) for $50 was the best I could do via disconnections chat. Took about half an hour. Now to upgrade the wife's. Existing non contract byo customer.

    • +1

Couldn't do much for the wife. $40 for 10gig was the best. We wanted something at $30 with less gb but no luck.

      • What did you say to get 10GB for $40… I was trying to get something along those lines… either 10 or 12 was fine with me.

      • Nice work. How to you negotiate the $40 for 10Gig?

        Thanks

        • Hi, chat, disconnections team. Asked for 10gig 12 month contract. Was offered $50 plan with $10 per month discount. So $40. This was with same person who did my phone. Perhaps he did better because I negotiated both. I also threatened to leave.

  • +2

This worked for me! I am existing Telstra customer (~5 years) and my contract had expired :)

    Steps I took:
    * 24/7 chat > select Disconnection (this is the team that can negotiate the contract)
    * Mentioned Optus 15gb for $40
    * They tinker a little and come back with $50 for 15gb ($20 discount from the $70 plan).

    Additional comments:
    * If you are an existing customer go to the disconnection team (can't emphasise this enough). Initally I went through the sales team (had not read through the comments properly) and they did not budge on the price at all.
    * Thanks so everyone's advice on OzB for this gem!

  • +3

I've gotten mine switched over! Thanks OzBargain :)

TL;DR success with 15gb M plan @$50/month for an existing customer.

    To help others:
    * The chat link - https://www.telstra.com.au/chatnow/landing
** If you are an existing Telstra customer, pick Mobiles and then Disconnections - this routes you to the retention team.
** If you're still in a contract, you pay out your device in full in your next bill so you start on a clean BYO plan.

    Regarding discounts:
    * By default, they are probably only authorized to give $10/month off. However, if you are an existing Telstra customer, they might be able to do the $20 off deal (seems like this is what is referred to above as the Loyalty discount). Unsure if they'll give you this if you're completely new.
    * I did mention that Optus are advertising $40 for 15gb during the chat - that might help nudge them a bit…
    * Retention team waived the contract termination fee.

I ended up switching from a very old plan onto the M plan (15gb) with $20 off since I'm an existing customer, so it works out to $50/month for me.
I asked about the Data share sim but they don't seem to know about it, so I went to a Telstra store and they need sort that out for you ($5/month it seems). Would've been great if the online chat team could bundle that in for me…

    Hope that helps!

    • Thanks for that info firzen - I've tried a few times via Chat>Disconnections to get a better deal like yourself. It appears they base it on your current account. I pushed and pushed them but all I could get was $10 off M plan ($60 PM) for 15GB unlimited calls etc. or $10 off S plan ($40 PM) for 10GB with $1000 calls and no international calls. $40 PM deal sounds pretty good, but for $10 more on Mx plan ($50 PM) I get 2GB plus unlimited calls, text and the international call offer… I think I will go with the $50 plan, but the $40 is pretty good really. I'm currently out of contract on another BYO phone plan paying $50 PM for 8GB and $1000 calls.

      • I saw this mentioned in one of the other comments, the Mx plan might actually be 10+2 for the base plan, +2 again for if you sign up before Sept? The way it's written is a bit confusing.

Instead of pushing for more discounts on it, you might be able to ask them if they can do anything like a bonus 1gb data etc..

    • Thanks this worked for me. 2 days left in contract.

  • I tried a few times - First time they said they couldnt do anything.
The second time i connected to the retention team and mentioned i was looking around but if they could offer me something i would sign up a 12 month contract.
They were pretty quick to offer $10 off the M (8GB) plan or $20 off the L ($50 for 15GB).

No luck on anything cheaper or more data though.

Existing Telstra customer out of contract on Casual 45.

  • The only thing stopping me jumping ship from Vodafone (currently $40/month 10gig) is that Telstra want $5/month extra for Visual Voicemail.

    • A bit of a late reply, but the T&Cs they just sent me say that it is currently included in the plans:

Your plan includes unlimited MessageBank, or if you have an Apple iPhone, MessageBank Plus is included.

I'll try and set it up once the plan has been setup, and will let you know if there are any problems with it.

  • $40 for 10gb $1000 of calls @ $2/min was the best i could get…
    another 12 mth recontract though.

would've liked 12gb or under $40 but i guess will need to wait for next wave of deals…

    • I got that with no contract 5 months ago.

  • +1

I managed to wrangle the $20 discount on the $70 Medium 15GB plan. Had to use the 24x7 chat and select Disconnection though. Two previous chats without this were not successful.

    • +1

Exactly the same for me. Happy with the result.

  • So weird, went on to negotiate a better deal and without even asking, the 'billings' team guy gave me a $10 discount on my current plan and 6gig extra data no new contract needed. So the $45 deal I got on here a couple of years ago with the free Samsung galaxy is now $35 with 8gig. Good enough for what I want.

    • I'm in your boat… Got the deal from 2 years ago which expired last month. Your $35 deal sounds perfect for my wife. Wish me luck!

    • You didn't get the name of the person you spoke to?

I tried the overseas Telstra online chat on Friday. Told the woman I was going to disconnect our two business mobiles and go to Optus. After lots of umming and ahhing, she said someone from Telstra Small Buisness would ring and see what they could do. They just rang (Australian Telstra Business - not OS) and I said I was considering the Optus $40 + 15GB plan. He said the best they could offer was $70 + 15GB. I said I guess I'll switch to Optus. He said, "Fine. Goodbye", and hung up. Wow, 20 years of business relationship doesn't count for much these days.

  • Tried to get $50 plan with 15GB through disconnections, this was the response:

"I will provide that to you without any hesitation If I can, but our system already updated our offers, as We see that there are discount rumors floating around some sites, we validated and there appears to be some misunderstanding , that is why the system is now restricting us to do it,
And some consultants is now under investigation about the offers they have provided that also appears to be invalid."

Highest they would go was 13GB.

    • That was the gist I got too. There was no way he was going to come near that Optus offer. Not even the 13gb you were offered.

  • I'm going through hell trying to get this provisioned. Moving from Boost Prepaid.

How the hell do you get in touch with Telstra complaints? I've tried twice over the phone and have been transferred to the wrong area each time?!

    • port to optus/vodaphone prepaid then back to telstra, it saves a huge headache
