Is that 11 and 99 and extra 5 at the end?

    • No, he missed a decimal point

  • That's not a bargain. I was offered this price without trying when I walked in a few months ago (all I said was it's expensive — could have haggled down further). They had the $1000 EFTPOS card and were doing free delivery and installation at the time.

  • Wouldn't be so bad if screen was at least 75 inches or more
Is this the best 65 inch in the world?

    • I think it's the same panel as the much cheaper C7/E7, but it is super thin and can be mounted on the wall.

Not for me. It won't fit into my Santa socks

  • Meh… I think I'll wait until the 75" OLED comes down to realistic prices.

How long you reckon? 5 years?

There's no 75" model in Aust yet.

I'd say in 3 years you'll be able to get one for $5k. But that is on the assumption that other manufacturers get on board OLED to drive down prices via competition. And new TVs with new features come out between now and then.

The TV industry is struggling. It's hard to get people to buy new TVs every few years unlike tablets, phones and laptops. There's not a whole lot new you can introduce that are must have features for people who own TVs without them. That's how you get gimmicks like curved screens, 3D, smart TVs and stuff. Smart TV functionality can be replicated with a $30 dongle. 3D is a fad that came and went. And curved TVs give a good view only to the one person seated directly in front of it. Everyone else's view will not be as good.

If TVs continue innovating with new in demand features, prices will fall. Otherwise they will mostly stagnate.

People normally only buy TVs when their current one breaks down or is too old. Even if someone sees a nice new TV and want it, there's is the problem of what to do with the existing one. Disposing of it is not as easy as disposing of an old smart phone. That could work out in your favor if manufacturers are having a hard time shifting them though.

At some point, 4K content will catch up with the TVs. More of them will sell, and they'll be produced cheaper. For now, it's still aimed at the enthusiast and early adopter market, OLED especially.

      • Are people really buying OLEDs for 4k? I wonder what the % of 4k content is watched on 4k panels atm. 1%? Free to air HD isn't great, won't be 4k for a long time.. A long, long time.

Experts are still saying that 1080p -> 4k is not distinguishable on a 65" panel at a conventional 3.5m-4.5m viewing distance too. The OLED advantage is the important one, contrast. 1080p content will still look much, much better on an OLED than the same content in 4k on an LED.

        • Only the ones who can afford the best are buying OLEDs at the moment. Eventually they will get cheaper like 1080p sets were when 4K became all the rage. But that does mean that there will be newer more desirable TVs than the current OLEDs that might tempt you. Of course the new sets will take the price tag of the existing OLEDs.

That;s how the tech cycle revolves. You want something but it's too expensive so you wait till it becomes affordable. But when it is affordable, you will want something newer and shinier and face the same dilemma.

At the moment not much 4K content is watched on 4K panels. I think some streaming services do 4K. There are also 4K blurays but a very limited selection. It took a long time to get all the DVDs converted to 1080p BD. It will take a while more to get them converted into 4K, if they bother to do so at all. It's a lot of work, and not everyone who purchased them in 1080p is going to rebuy the UHD BDs. Maybe they will only do UHD for new releases going forward and not try to remaster the back catalog.

Games support 4K right now, but it brings the best PCs to their knees. And PS4 Pro is for the most part not a true 4K machine but an upscaled sub-4K experience. There is Xbox One X coming soon that will do better than PS4 Pro but not better than top end PCs.

Unless you're consuming any of the above entertainment, it's not the best time to buy a 4K set. It's ahead of its time. Wait till more content is available and has become standard. Will be cheaper then. That is unless you have content now that can make the most of it.

Depending on how far back you sit, 4K may be difficult to resolve. Meaning that it's hard to tell the difference between 4K and 1080p after a certain distance.
