If anyone hasn't played Star Control 2, you can download it free as The Ur-Quan Masters (they couldn't use the Star Contol name, as it was trademarked). Created from the 3DO version of the game, from the original source code.

    1. Battlefield Bad Company 2 - I neglected my first born child horrendously on account of this game. 1500 hours +.
    2. Team Fortress 2 - 300 hours plus. Spent so much time on that game.
    3. NBA Jam on Sega Mega Drive, again huge time sink.
    4. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Revival on GBA SP. The GBA SP's recessed D-pad made special moves a cinch. I must have spent hundreds of hours on that game.
    5. Original Super Mario Kart on SNES. My brother and I used to play battle mode for literally years and years, probably up until 2003 or so.

          Great read, thanks cannedhams :)

        • +1

That was a really great read, highly recommended. Amazing how much legacy a truly great game can create.

        • @Agret: Yep. When a game was big in the 80s or 90s it was truly huge. EVERYONE played Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Streeties, Mario 3 etc etc. It doesnt matter how big a game is these days, it will never have the same legacy as those old games did.

As for the even older games, Pac Man grossed over $10 billion in revenues in the arcades (over $20 billion adjusting for inflation). Nothing except bloody Candy Crush Saga will ever come close to that.

Funny. I've always unconsciously separated Dota from War Craft 3. They've always been two separate games in my mind :P

    3. Pokemon Blue (red and yellow suck)
    4. Can't decide.
    5. Can't decide.

OP says it's simple as it gets! But this would take ages for me to decide!!

Warcraft 3/Dota, Bioshock, Batman Arckam City, Super Smash Bros, Golden Eye, Wonder Boy 3, The Last of Us, World of Warcraft (thank god i managed to get away from this), infamous, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie, COD 4, Metal Gear Solid….how the hell are you meant to separate these????

I think you'd agree that the music for Star Control 2 was amazing for its time on the PC. Needed a Soond Blaster 2 iirc for best results! Would you believe I can still remember the disco tune when docked at the Earth starbase…

And the hilarious dialogue, like with the Orz.

Random memories: Orz marines, the brave raccoonish Shofixti and their ancient allies but lately enemies the Yehat (who feel ashamed for their behaviour…), the funny crablike Spathi, Mycon fungi, Zok-For-Pik. And the smiley Melnorme traders.

      • +2

The music for SC2 IS amazing on PC, absolutely. Then I bought a 3DO recently and a longbox copy of SC2 for it, because I'm ridiculous and I like longboxed versions. Now that version is BANANAS fantastic (except for having to use crappy 3DO controllers)!

I would like to do a stream of that version one day.

Yep, that game is very silly and still holds up surprisingly well. Shame that SC3 was such a let down.

I'm curious to know the new Stardock developed prequel will hold up, when (or if it ever) it sees the light of day.

        • +1

Thanks, didn't even know a prequel was in the works. Looks promising.

You know, I believe I still have the original SCII Star Map poster somewhere… Wonder if it's worth anything?

        • @Member 0230:

Yeah I hope it pans out.

A starmap might be worth $10-25 bucks by itself on Ebay for sure, considering the longbox versions of the 3DO game go for $80+ for pretty ordinary condition ones.

    • +1

You ever give the remake of Wonder boy a crack? It is awesome and lets you go back to the old school graphics (not that you can)

      • Haven't played the remaster yet, but they are releasing a physical collector's edition on the 4th, so i'm absolutely getting that. It's got the master system original art and grid lines on a reversible sleeve with the new art on the other side, schweet!

Plus I own the original master system cart :)

    3. Battlefield 1

Surprised no one mentioned it earlier

    • +1

A lot of people shit on BF1, but I think it's an amazing gaming achievement. The gameplay in multiplayer can be exceptional (with some frustration thrown in at times) and the campaign was short but fun. The music is incredible, the graphics are top notch, the mood/ambience is captured perfectly. The only thing that frustrates me is the lack of weapon customisation but there's not a whole lot you can do with WW1 weapons.

      • It is one of the best games ever made with so much realistic maps ( as per WW1 ) and great team play. I don't play any other game now.

There will always be haters who will hate anything.

    • To be honest for the battlefield franchise my personal list would be

      1. Bad Company 2
      2. Battlefield 4
      3. Battlefield 3
      4. Battlefield 1

Something about the gameplay just isn't as satisfying as the older titles, maybe the fact that the maps are just so open with the capture points so far away from each other and turn into a massive sniperfest more often than not and that you don't have access to vehicles to get you around quickly at most bases.

    Animal Crossing
    Runescape
    Pokemon Go

    Comand and conquer
    Warcraft 2
    Diablo
    Tactical ops

Basically ss good as it gets. Golden ears of gaming. Gave up after that. They just were not fun and simple anymore.

    • You liked Diablo but missed out on Diablo 2??

      LOL UT. MMMMMMonster Kill.

      • Part 2 became to complicated one character couldn't do everything and I got stuck for hours figuring how to get out of town. Had to break through rocks blocking the way. Shrugs. Lost its charm. The butcher was awsome.

        • Don't remember having to break rocks to get out of town, too long ago. But yes, D2 was much more complicated. You could in fact do everything with one character but you would have to spend hours doing research on what build and gear to use so it's not good if you just want to jump on and start killing. I tended to like more hardcore/complex games back then.

Diablo 1 butcher was actually the most memorable boss for me in all 3 Diablos. Fresh Meat.

  • BF3
    BF1
    BF4
    GTA V
    Splinter cell

    • So much BF but no BFbc2?

      • I first started gaming during uni so bf3 was my first fps

        • Fair enough. I got an xbox 360 late and got put onto bfbc2 by a mate strait away. Great game and multiplayer. It made me buy bf3 on release which is something i never do. If you get the chance grab a copy, the single player story was much better than bf3 or bf4 i reckon.
