  • +2

The best game I have ever played for years was BF1942. Others were Wolfenstein 3d, doom3, Warcraft 3, Civ 1 etc

    • I don't hate Doom 3 like most people do, but I still have to ask;

      Doom 3 tho'?

      • +1

That was the only game I had at the time…. so love it or not…..I had no choice

    1. Myth: The Fallen Lords - Best RTS game i've played, removing resource management of traditional RTS's means you completely focus on having the right units in the right place (Bungie were well ahead of their time with this a shame they sold the franchise!) Have struggled since to find a game that plays similarly (small amount of units to control, tactical short games)

    2. Warcraft 2 - "Yes my lord!"

    3. Pro Evolution Soccer - Many, many nights with 2v2 tournaments and the occasional 7 player games on a single PC thanks to USB controllers…

    4. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 - Great challenging multiplayer co-op & split screen on consoles

    5. Street Fighter 2 - Arcade Classic

  • I didn't play many games but grand theft auto and counter strike were the two that I played and loved.

  • +2

Saving this thread. Lots of great memories… and, suggestions of games to try. Thanks OP and everyone else.

    • +2

      1.Super Mario World (SNES)
      2.Doom (old DOS/Windows)
      3.Mario Kart (N64)
4.Street Fighter 2 (Arcade and/or Mega Drive, SNES)
      5.Madden Football (SNES)

      • +1

Best list I've seen so far!

      • Very solid list.

    • +1

There's a lot of sentiment attached to these lists. As an example, Tried playing golden eye again a while ago. The controls are absolute rubbish.

The other extreme is people highly rating their most recent games.

Some old multiplayer games simply won't have the player base to be much fun anymore.

The rpgs are the ones that can really stand the test of time.

  • +2

Its sad that no one has even mentioned monster hunter.

    • Here's my list
      1: Monster Hunter 1
      2: Monster Hunter Generations
      3: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
      4: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
      5: Monster Hunter World

    • Yep. Scrolling through the comments just looking out for it. Definitely my number 1. Spent more than 3000 hours on various iterations of the series. Best coop multiplayer around IMO.

  • Diablo 2
    BFbc2
    Star Wars KOTORs
    Age of empires
    Goldeneye

  • So hard! Off the top of my head…

    GTA Vice City
    Warcraft 2

Honorable mentions to Super Mario World, Super Smash Bros Melee, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Banjo Kazooie and Metal Slug 3.

  • +1

    Baldur's Gate 2
    XCOM Enemy Within
    Final Fantasy 7/8
    Nox
    Witcher 2/Skyrim

    • +1

      I preferred XCOM 2…

      • I might too but haven't played it yet, pc is old and don't want to play it on low settings(same with the Witcher). I've heard good things though so I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as much.

  • Rainbow 6 siege
    Fifa 17
    Black ops 3
    Black ops 2
    Super mario

  • Fallout 2 was fun. Played it as a child, as a teen and as an adult. As I grew up I began to get some of the humour and pop culture references. I'm glad there's still a mod community out there for it.

    I also enjoyed

    Baldur's Gate 2
    Icewind Dale Trilogy

    • Doom II
    • Doom current version
    • Unreal Tournament 2004
    • Battlefield 4
    • Solitaire

When putting Doom II first you have to understand the context at the time (early 90s)

  • 1) Metroid Prime
    2) Final fantasy 6
    3) Battlefield BC 2

    • Metroid Prime

One day I'll get around to it

    2. Heroes of Might and Magic
    3. Super Mario Kart / Super Mario World (sorry couldn't choose, it's equal)
    4. Dungeon Keeper
    5. Pharaoh
    • Dungeon keeper didn't age well. That's the real shame of it.

Dungeon keeper 2 aged a lot better but it just crashes like crazy.

      • Such a great concept though. I should have added Alpha Centauri and Theme Hospital to that list!

    • Heroes of Might and Magic was one of the first games I ever played as a child. 3 is still the best, and 5 is quite good as well (and the one I play) when I occasionally play a match with my husband :)

    4. Warcraft III
    5. World of Tanks
    • +1

ohhh, forgot "Heroes of Might and Magic III"

      • bestest game ever. If you like HoMMIII, try XCOM. Similar genre but far more balanced and less grindy.

Much better playability as an adult.

  • +2

This is rather difficult to choose. But from most of gaming years.

    Ragnarok Online
Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne expansion just like OP
    Persona 4
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Final Fantasy X

These games consumed whole heap of time and at the time were amazing. I could never forget these titles. Just thinking that I had a chance to play them during their prime time and popularity already made me feel great.

I notice that the past 10 years haven't had much at on this list.

Others worth mentioning didn't make it to top 5, C&C series, Dune 2, Starcraft, Theme Hospital, Syndicate, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Under the knife 2, Baldurs Gate 2, Dragon Age Origins, Metal Gear Solid 2 + Sequels, Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Initial D arcade

Of all the games, these had the best memories.

    Unreal Tournament (played competitively)
    CS (played competitively)
    X-wing
    Final Fantasy 7
WoW - dear god how can I forget the countless Sleepless nights spent on progression so long ago.

    • unreal Tournament was the best! yeah! :) what's your favourite weapon? map? mode? I loved the domination, there was a rathe4 small level in the city, boy, that was so much fun!

      • I forgot the maps haha. Favorite weapon definitely the shock rifle, so satisfying to use. Ball -> side step -> Boom.
I played CTF and TDM. Good comps in au and au vs nz I remember. This was sooo long ago haha.
The subsequent UT releases were terrible, lost interest after that.

  • +1
    1. Baldurs Gate 2.
    2. Deus Ex
    3. Half Life 2
    4. Age of Empires 2
    5. Star Wars KOTOR

Baldurs Gate 2 is a fair bit ahead of anything else, for me.

  • +2

Best games, based on months of life 'invested' into them over my time on this earth (its not just nostalgia, its literally massive amounts of blister inducing time) ;)

    1) Speedball 2 Brutal Deluxe -Amiga 500

    2) Defenders of The Crown - Amiga 500

    3) International Karate Plus - C64/Amiga 500

    4) Final Doom - Playstation 1 (linked with another playstation in a separate room… first experience of separate console/pc multiplayer gaming)

    5) StarCraft - PC, dial up direct to BattleNet prior to the internet.

Have been many more since then that have been terrific, like Sim City 2000, Port Royale, Star Wars KOTOR, Oblivion, Skyrim, and of course WoW etc… but those ones above combined have taken away years of my life I reckon :).

Most amount of money earned from me at Timezone arcade was definitely NBA Jam (the original one with 'grandmamma' Johnson) :). Holy crap that game was addictive! Boomshakalaka!!

    • +1

      Load"$",8

      • +1

        Load"*",8 mostly ;).

        • +1

unless you had more than one game on it, the other great thing was to make a cutout on the other side as well to copy onto the reverse side of the disc

        • +2

          I dont miss those 5 1/4's :).

Still… I was king of the street having one of those drives instead of a tape drive.
Pitfall loading in a minute instead of like half an hour :).

        • +1

@UFO: My Dad bought VZ2000 with no tape drive… We had to copy the games code out of a book, when we got sick of the game we turned the computer off and the game was wiped… What was he thinking… Still, computer hardware cost a lot in those days and in the early 90s he bought an Amiga 500 with a second drive and monitor.

        • Jeez! I remember Computer Studies at school with the VZ2000. Typing all that code with no way to save it, knowing that if you turned off pc you'd had to start all over again :).

The Amiga must have felt like a dream after that!
