Comments

      • I remember hating life when I died in the game. It would take literally 5 minutes to load on my pc which was a Pentium II 266mhz with 32MB of ram.

    1. Forza Horizon 3 (XB1)
    2. Forza Horizon 2 (XB1)
    3. GTAV (XB1)
    4. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
    5. Battlezone I & II (PC)
    1. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Without a doubt the most immersive and well written game I've ever played. Every single second is strikingly well crafted and I'm my opinion this game has the highest and most realistic production values and level of pollish ive ever seen. The animationin particular are 100% uncanny valley and without another thought the best in the games Industry and in CGI that I think there is.
    2. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
To be fair I get this game tomorrow but I've already played it on Cemu with my PC though it ran at about 15-20 fps. Best open world game over everything played. The sandbox and level of detail combined with a truly freeform exploration system is utterly astounding and at pijtns ridiculous. It's also quite a technical achievement to have running on the Wii U and this is a big shift for Nintendo and their first party games. It also probably the best hand crafted open ended experience I've ever seen. Not the most graphically impressive but the art style makes up for it and cleverly hides the open ends.
    3. Batman Arkham Knight/ City
Can't decide between AK and Arkham City. Probably would lean toward City for nostalgia and because the soundtrack and story were so much better. I really felt let down with those two aspects the most in Knight and honestly people were being cry babies with the Batmobile stuff. Yeah there was too much of it but it was still effing awesome to be Batman and have the complete experience.
    4. Halo 3/ ODST/ Reach
I grew up with these games. I remember my older brother buying a 360 with halo 3, gears and crackdown and R6 Vegas. We played splitscreen on this games for like ever. I still don't really understand what the story is in halo 3 or any of the original trilogy for that matter just because I never paid that much attention because the game itself was more fun.
    5. Metal Gear Solid V TPP - Absolutely unparalleled gameplay sandbox. You can literally run every aspect of your own army from the soldiers you recruit and what they wear to the Camo On your horses mask. Never really played much of the others and fell in love with this one because of the gameplay loop and the open endedness.

I know a lot of these are recent but they are really my favourite and all demonstrate some part of the dream games/ game I've always wanted.

I'm writing this on mobile or I'd lost more but these games are like my life.

Loved Stalker. Spent most of my time trying to get my hands on a g36E before you were supposed to get one.

  • Mine are nearly all online fps.
BF 2142, BFBC2, BF3 and BF4 plus Medal of Honor and Call of Duty in their various forms. Didn't really like COD2 though and stopped after Modern Warfare.

Top 5 would be BF4, BF2142, COD UO, BF3 and MOHAA in that order.

  • Grannies garden.

    4. Pokemon Blue/Red
    5. Kingdom Hearts

    Special mention Super Smash Bros.

Spent half my life playing these games.

    • Perfect Dark! Goldeneye gets the glory for multiplayer on consoles, but perfect Dark was better in every way, it had Bots, huge weapons list, Farsight rifle ftw.

  • Fallout 1
    Civ 4
    Super Smash Bros
    Pokemon Blue
    Diablo 2

Plus: Super Metroid, Morrowind, Skyrim, Soldat, Grand Theft Auto 2 and San Andreas, Age of Empires 2, Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, Ocarina of Time, Commander Keen and Jungle Jill, Gran Turismo 6, Super Mario World, StarWing, Sim City 2000, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Thief Gold, System

  • In order of time spent on them.

    1. Starcraft 2 (team ladder and arcade - it's essentially the only game I've played for the last ~6 years now)
    2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer (the first time I played multiplayer and boy was it addicting)
    3. Pokemon Silver and Sapphire (don't know how many times I replayed them back in the pre-internet era when these, FFTA and Advance Wars were the only games I had)
    4. Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X (VII had the most replays), FFTA
    5. Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2
  • I surprised myself with my list

    1. Witcher 3 - Excellent narration, story (I live for that stuff), meaningful quests, hundreds of hours of stuff to do and immerse yourself in the world.

    2. Forza Horizon 3/2 - These games are too similar to put separately but they truly get casual racing games

    3. OG NFS Most Wanted - Way back game, the first most wanted was truly special, underground 2 before was good but truly the franchise could never make its way back after this one imo.

    4. Civilization 5 - Can sink hours into this game and be completely refreshed, supports all play styles and is actually rewarding.

    5. Uncharted 4 - Improves on all the others in the uncharted series nicely and I love the exhilaration you get in playing stealth, almost like far cry 4 which nailed stealth imo. Let down somewhat by the rush to end the protagonist's story.

    1. Wizardry
    2. Might and Magic 6 & 7
    3. Heroes of Might and Magic 4
    4. Leisure suit Larry

    Blood and Bacon

    • I've thought about picking up Blood And Bacon so many times (it's $1 USD…sometimes cheaper) but never did because it looked extremely repetitive. Unfamiliar with some others you have on the list so will need to look into those too now!

  • Little Fighter 2
    Streets of Rage

    Warcraft 3 - Dota
    Max Payne 1

So many great games over the years, hard to pick the top 5!

    1. Secret of Mana (SNES)
    2. Rock n Roll Racing (SNES)
    3. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
    4. Mario Bros. (NES)
    5. Tough choice between Dig Dug/Galaga (Arcade)

Honourable mention: Pitfall (Atari), Donkey Kong (SNES), Crash Bandicoot (PSX), Final Fantasy VIII (PSX), Command & Conquer (PC), original DoTA (PC), Wolfenstein 3D (DOS), Killer Instinct (SNES), Super Metroid (SNES), Gran Turismo (PSX), Commander Keen (DOS), Hearts (card game), Briscola (card game)

    • Still need to play secret of mana. I played either the 2nd or third one (the one that had the japanese to english fan translation) and that game was amazing.

    1. Witcher 3
    2. Oblivion (doesn't hold up now but I loved it at the time)
    3. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR)
    4. Fable (at the time)
    5. Cursed Treasure 2

Not too much diversity in there, I definitely have a preference for games. Cursed Treasure 2 is my go to for listening to podcasts

  • I always find it hard to narrow down my list but I'll try…

    1. Metroid Prime Trilogy
    2. Super Metroid
    3. Persona 4 Golden
    4. Jak & Daxter
    5. Banjo-Kazooie

There are plenty of other great ones that I'm sure I'm forgetting but these come to mind at the moment. I guess others near the top of my list would be some of the Zelda series, TWEWY, KOTOR (haven't played 2 yet), TF2, Portal, most of the Sonic games and Darksiders 1&2. Coming up with these lists always bothers me because I know I'm forgetting some.

    • Banjo-Kazooie - probably the most underrated game on the N64

    • Banjo was the best! I still play it lmao
      I was theeee besttt

    I notice you like RTS.

I would have to put Dune II on my list. It is the one that started the genre as we know it. It's not the best ever made, but it was the most impactful and influential and it is the one I enjoyed playing the most at the time I played it.

Another game I would put on the list is Master of Magic released in 1994, which is not the first ever 4X game but I think it's the first fantasy based one. There've been a ton released since but none are quite as good. A shoutout has to go to Heroes of Might and Magic II.

FF7 is my favorite JRPG ever, so that's on the list.

I think I'll include a first person dungeon crawler in Might and Magic: Worlds of Xeen, which includes MM4 and MM5. Wow, brings back memories.

For D&D, I'm tempted to include the Baldur's Gate series but I think I'll give a nod to the Goldbox series, in particular Dark Queen of Krynn.

Most of you will probably not have heard of any of my selection except FF7 maybe. Let's just say I'm old.

    So, in no particular order:

    • Dune II
    • Final Fantasy 7
    • Dark Queen of Krynn
    • Might and Magic: Worlds of Xeen
    • Master of Magic

There are a ton of honorable mentions though:

    • Baldur's Gate 2
    • Command & Conquer 1
    • Warcraft 2
    • Starcraft
    • Heroes of Might and Magic series
    • Chrono Trigger
    • Half Life 1
    • Zelda A Link to the Past & Wind Waker
    • Alone in the Dark 1 (the series that inspired Resident Evil)
    • A ton of old school point and click adventure games from Sierra and Lucasarts (e.g. Quest for Glory, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle)
    • A ton of Star Wars games (e.g. X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight)
    • Persona 4 Golden (2nd favorite JRPG and most recent game in my list)

These are not the best games ever made (you will have to go with a much more recent list for that) but they are my favorites.

    • I'd say if you where going to be unbiased just on the above list FFVII, Baulders Gate 2, Star Craft, Zelda A link to the past and Chrono Trigger - would be some of the best games EVER made.

If anything 'most' recent games dont stack up to some of the originality and creativity that those games had - My top 5 where based on personal preference.

But the top 5 best games ever is a totally different argument and list - In all honesty i wouldn't put a single game from the current console generation - it would likely be games like Super Mario, Tetris, Star Craft, Knights of the Old Republic, GTA 3 etc these games where not only a commercial success, not only fun but they revolutionized games forever (for there time).

      • The reason I say they're not the best 'ever made' is because games improve over time. But we view older games through nostalgia glasses. Absolutely the games of today are better than the games from the 80s in any metric. But back then our standards were lower. We weren't as spoiled, so we view each game as a product of its time. How innovative and impressive was it compared to other games of its time?

The newer games while technically better (any complaints you had with an older game will have been fixed plus some new refinements and features are added) than older games, they don't do new things you haven't seen before, so you aren't as impressed by the latest Call of Duty as you were with CoD4.

Some people like FFXV and I'd say it is good, but am I as fond of it as I was when I played my first FF as a teenager? Not even close. I'm just in a different place in my life now, and the things that once impressed me don't anymore because I've seen it all before and it's no longer novel. Back then there was nothing like it. Now an open world RPG like FFXV is a dime a dozen.

But you're right, some of the games are timeless in design and the only things newer games do better is graphics and sound.

If anything 'most' recent games dont stack up to some of the originality and creativity that those games had - My top 5 where based on personal preference.

This is true and the reason why none of the recent games make my top 10 of all time list. But that's not the fault of these games. If I was able to play The Witcher 3 in 1995 as opposed to 2015, I think I would have loved that game a lot more than I did. It is a fantastic game, and if you go and compare it to RPGs of 20 years ago, it probably beats them all. But it doesn't make my list because in 2015, it didn't wow me the way older games did when I was 12. It did what it did extremely well, but it just wasn't a novel experience.

And I don't think it's a case of not enough time has passed. In 20 years time I won't look back on Witcher 3 and say it really was one of the best games I ever played now that I have my nostalgia goggles on. However, the games I put on my list were games that not only enraptured me while I was playing it, they stayed with me when I was at school. They dominated my thoughts when I wasn't playing them and I couldn't wait to get home and play again. This was an addiction and craving I had. Games just haven't been doing this to me anymore, maybe because I'm older and jaded. In the last 15 years no game has made me addicted to it or crave playing it when I'm at work with the exception Persona 4 Golden.

But the top 5 best games ever is a totally different argument and list - In all honesty i wouldn't put a single game from the current console generation

I'm the same as you, which is why I didn't have any games on my list newer than 2000. Not that I don't think there were any great games after that. They just weren't as ground breaking, or didn't speak to me the way older games did, but as I said, it might not be the fault of the game but a fault of me growing up and being harder to please.

PC gamer recently did a list of top 100 games of all time, and they gave Witcher 3 the #1 spot. I kind of cringed at that.

        • Thats Fair point in 10-20 years from now im sure World of war craft will be remember with a similar nostalgia to Super Mario. It also revolutionized online gaming.

Witcher 3 is a good game but the best of all time is clearly bullshit it isnt even the best RPG of all time let alone the best game.

Even in the past decade of RPGs alone i would stay the Witcher 3 wouldnt be number 1 no disrespect to anyone who thinks it is, of course it is a good game but in the last 10 years alone I would say Shadows of Mordor, Dragon Age Origins and Divinity Original Sin just off the top of my head are better.

    • Alone in the Dark was mind blowing in '92, first experience of 3D polygon characters over fixed 2D backgrounds

      • Glad I'm not the only one who's played it. No one ever mentions that game. All the talk is on Resident Evil.

This is another example of nostalgia goggles for me. Compared objectively, RE is the better game. But AitD was a new experience for me, and I'd played 3 of them before the first RE released. RE did not feel new to me, only improved (AITD's graphics were rough).

I evaluate games not just on overall quality but the era it released in. This was the granddaddy of survival horror as far as I know, and deserves more credit. It's a shame that later games sucked.

      • Rome was good for it's time, but flaming pigs and cows for artillery and other stuff make it a joke. Warhammer has dumbed down most of the campaign and political features, the battles are good the rest is a shell.

How epic was fox's dad as you bailed out the tunnels on the last mission.

My 12 year old self was amped.

    1. FF8 - I felt the combat system was unique in its 'junction' system where it utilized the exact same magic that you could use or draw from enemies. The story wasn't perfect but it drove me to finish the game and from that alone personally it was superb. A shame it has no plans of being rewritten nor remastered. Also, the idea of kids coming out of a soldier school who have powerful skills and can affect the world? Sounds fun!

    2. Football Manager - if a game sucks 400 hours yearly of my life, I'll put it right here.

    3. Tetris - if falling blocks remain in your head as you try to sleep at night, then it gets on my list :P

    4. Hide and Seek: There's not many games you can play where your wit or lack of can be judged and remain in memories of your participants especially if they're friends of yours. No video games have caused sudden urge in me to urinate but a real life game of hide and seek has especially when hiding.

    5. Nier: Automata. There hasn't been a game I played (and truthfully I haven't played A LOT of games) where the music consistently adds urgency and emotion into its battles and adventures. There are many games that does this to their boss battles but never to the number of times Nier repeats it and in unique ways. Its soundtrack is easily the best I ever heard. In addition, its wider philosophical themes and its storytelling leads me to believe it will be rated one of the best games but only under the test of time.

    • The ff8 Cutscene with the mechanical spider. Never seen anything like it in a game before. Even the intro was epic.

And the first time you used a GF before it got annoying.

      • Holy crap yeah, that sorta cutscene was pretty much groundbreaking back then… kinda feels like we haven't ventured too far if we realize that was 18 years ago!
