Free Pokemon Toy and Trading Card with Happy Meal Purchase at McDonald's

904

Picked up a couple of these on Friday night and thought that it's quite a good deal considering it would cost more to buy these from a shop than it costs for a Happy Meal (<$5 for cheapest option). The toys are around 10cm high/long and have a built in led light that glows when you push the button. Also comes with a trading card in a plastic sleeve.

Received Solgaleo and Lunala on Friday at Gympie in QLD but might vary from store to store.

You can also just buy the toy for $2, if you're just collecting.

    • +1

Can you ask for a particular one? i.e. my daughter would no doubt enjoy a Pikachu toy and I wouldn't mind getting her one for 2 bucks, but we don't eat at Maccas and I don't want to have to blind bag it.

      • +6

You can purchase whatever they have in stock. I'm assuming they release 2 Pokemon and 2 Hello Kitty toy each week, and figure will vary from store to store (depending if they still have old stock)

Last year, I travelled to all the McDonalds in the Sydney CBD to complete a collection of Adventure Time Figures.

        • +1

Cheers, I feel like an idiot trying to buy the beanie baby.

        • I couldn't complete my collection. All the Maccas near me didn't order in the ones later in the series because they couldn't get rid of the earlier ones.

    • +4

You're kinda cheating yourself out of a happy meal if you just buy it though.

      • They're tiny anyway

        • …and so are the happy meals! Zing!

        • @serpserpserp: I meant the food portion is tiny and not worth getting

  • -1

Nope, it was a 'Despicable Me' toy here in Vic today.

    • +2

The McDonald website does say up next, so I'm assuming once old (Despicable Me) toys are out of stock, Pokemon/Hello Kitty will enter the rotation.

      • Edit: Nevermind, didn't know realise the link went to happymeal.com.au. This will be handy going forward lol

Where do you see this on the website?? I've tried looking in the past and just looked now and don't see it anywhere. Thanks!

        • +1

If you click 'Toy Box', after that its in the very bottom of the screen on 'Up Next'

    • +9

Why is this a deal? This is just standard McDonald's happy meal.

      • +5

Because the official figures are more expensive? And it comes with a free promo and food for five dollars?

      • +2

Pokemon has been popular since most of us were kids so I think the deal is you don't miss out on collecting them all if you see this promotion on oz bargain now. It is weird to call it a free toy with a Happy Meal when toys come with all Happy Meals and Happy Meals cost more than the identical hamburger meal.

      • Because not everyone who's interested in the Pokemon go to Maccas regularly to know about this?

  • +5

I never want to see another Yungoos as long as I live.

    • +1

Why the hate for Yungoos…he turns into the supreme leader, Gumshoos…

      • +1

Because I'm a (profanity) idiot that actually played the RPG.

  • Really can't buy them before 10:30?

    • +1

I think it really depends on the employee/store. The only reason you can't buy then before 10:30am is because of the breakfast menu, which doesn't include Happy Meal. But I'm sure you can just purchase the toy (for $2) before 10:30am.

      • Thanks

          He ate the patties. :P

      Its beautiful psychology.

They use the senses (notably smell which is quite powerful in creating long lasting, easily retrievable memories), its bright, friendly, its fast.

      Then add
      - The excitement of a treat.
      - Even more excitemnt of getting a present/toy
      - Sugar hit to give you a kick.
      - Mum & dad relax (its quick, easy & shuts the whingeing kids up).

Then years down the track when you're feeling a bit down, you walk past Maccas, Maybe even get a whiff is that smell and you go back for that bit of childhood happiness.

      Its very clever.

      There some more insights here

In moderation, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a treat, the excitement of getting a toy, having sugar and mum and dad relaxing. And nothing wrong with getting maccas now and then and nothing wrong with reliving childhood memories. Are you even listening to what youre saying? Take off your tinfoil hat.

        • -6

In moderation, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a treat

It's not a treat, it's mistreatment. Why do you call it a treat? Because you've been conditioned to? Because you 'like' it? It's only a treat to those who have no idea what they are eating. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/girl-tells-mcdonalds-ceo-sto…

well I don't have text to speech, but if you read what I wrote, I wasn't actually being critical, not was I saying whether you should/shouldn't indulge. I find the psychology fascinating.

But I think people should also have the knowledge when they are being manipulated, so they can chose to go along for the ride & take advantage of it (like I do with Google), or if they chose not too (like I do with Maccas).

Every wonder why when you enter one of the big supermarkets why, you are greated by the fresh produce? And the dairy is down the back? And the quickest way back to the checkout is via the junk food aisle? Why the health & beauty aisle is so brightly lit? WHy there's small junk food bars at the checkout? It aint by accident.

On the odd occasion I'm after a small cheeseburger meal I'll get a happy meal which is ridiculously 35c cheaper. Cleaned out the car and found a bunch of dodgy maccas toys under the seat. People actually buy them for $2?

Cheaper than a small cheeseburger meal, but still don't see the bargain. Normal price.

    • +10

No more nanny state please. You've already taken freedom of speech, guns, clubbing, driving and workplace dating.

    • +5

How about no. How about not bringing your kids to maccas instead of making it other people's responsibilities to take care of your own children. I'm going to eat whatever I want whenever I want and I don't give a flying f*** if it is unhealthy for other people's kids because it's not MY f***ing problem.

Typical entitled lazy parents attitude. 'Oh I'm too lazy to teach my kids about healthy eating habits so it's other peoples job to stop selling junk food to my kids.'

      F*** off.

      • +2

I'm assuming cyrax83 looks after their own kids but is thinking of parents who aren't smart enough to see through McDonalds marketing ploys. They have a point. We live in a world where parents still drink and smoke while pregnant and avoid breast feeding for the sake of convenience.

        • In that case, bad parents should be penalised, not those who are rational and responsible

        • +2

@Sike O: problem is you need to legislate for the masses, you can't exactly fine individual parents for buying a happy meal. We have a situation where these giants hire experts to gets the kids in for life (similar to what cigarette companies do). It's an unfair fight really, experts in their field vs low socioeconomic parents. The original comment was quite reasonable imo but in true ozbargain style anyone with an opinion gets voted down.

        • +1

@MikeKulls: Dude it's not anyone with an opinion gets voted down, it's anyone with an opinion most people disagree with gets voted down.

My personal opinion is that it's not reasonable to ban bundling toys with junk food.

People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions in this country. Everything is someone else's fault and not your own.

McDonalds is a business and it is their right and their responsibility to make as much money as possible. Giving toys away with meals is a smart way to do it. They are looking out for their own interests and the interests of their franchisees.

On the other hand YOU need to look out for your own interests and the interests of your children.

I get it. I have a kid. This sort of marketing really is powerful on them and not just them. When I see fast food advertised on TV I want it too. I love fast food and the advertising makes it harder to resist. Maybe I even want to buy a happymeal to get a Pokémon but again that's on me on not Maccas' fault. Teaching your kids self restraint and good decision making is much better than not exposing them to any temptation at all because guess what, life is going to expose them to temptation to things that are bad for them no matter what Maccas does.

If I go to a used caryard intending to buy a Toyota Camry but walk out having purchased a BMW with all the trimmings that happened to also be overpriced compared to market and is going to put a strain on me financially… Is that the used car salesman's fault? No it's my own fault for not being smart enough.. It is not the used car salesman's fault that I am stupid.

If you behave stupidly or make mistakes, you are going to be disadvantaged in life. Everyone will do these things from time to time. Some more than others. It's a fact of life and we can't protect everyone from themselves. They should protect themselves. Take responsibility for themselves.

        • @Xastros: that's great but as I said you have experts hired at McDonald's working full time over many years working out the best way to trick young children. It's not a fair fight. There needs to be legislation to counter this. With your BMW example there are laws surrounding how much you can borrow and the govt frequently adjusts these laws. Your idea that people should look after their own kids doesn't hold water, plenty of people simply don't and need laws like this.

        • @MikeKulls: It doesn't matter what is a fair fight or not. My whole point is you have to protect yourself not rely on government laws to do it for you.

Re: the BMW example sure there are laws that regulate how much you can borrow. However leave any borrowing aside or financial hardship for now. If I was just duped into buying a much more expensive car than I initially wanted because the salesman was a smooth talker then is that his fault for 'tricking' me or is it my fault for being talked into it? He is just doing his job of trying to make the most money possible for his company and himself. Has done nothing wrong. I was the one being stupid.

Plenty of people don't look after their kids and it is not our place to force them to. It's a free world. If I feed my kids lots of McDonalds you can't tell me not to and neither should the government interfere with a business' right to do legitimate business because of poor parenting or even adults over indulging on junk food. What's next? Make it a legal requirement to exercise half an hour a day? Make it illegal to let your kids watch more than 2 hours of TV a day?

        • @Xastros: sure you have to protect yourself but laws are there to protect people who may not be able to protect themselves, eg kids without decent parents. Should we just leave big corporations to do whatever they want? How about we install little poker machine is Macca's.

Re BMW salesman it is definitely a grey area and there is a big element of him tricking people. Possibly there should be laws surrounding that. I imagine there are all sorts of laws surrounding that sort of thing for good reason. Those laws are quite reasonable and are there because people have been caught out before. Notice how mobile phone companies have to give the total spend these days? Price doesn't seem so cheap when they say it is $3000 total. Hmmmm

As for it not being our place to tell people how to look after their kids, what a screwed up society that would be if we didn't. Think about it, people need to be told not to smoke with their kids in the car. What about people who abuse their kids, do we not tell them to stop? Of course we do and of course we have laws surrounding that. Basically there is no question these laws are not good, the only question is whether the MC Chuck's example is too trivial or not. I think it should be law because it helps reduce obesety and stops these corps selling to our most impressionable.

Btw, disagreeing with someone's POV is NOT a valid reason to downvote someone. You should only downvote someone of their comment is racist or offensive.

        • @MikeKulls: Trying not to be rude but I honestly find it laughable that you think there should be laws to protect people from their own stupidity re: the BMW example. It is not a grey area. If you got 'tricked' into an upsell to a car you weren't intending to buy there shouldn't be laws to protect you so long as the salesman didn't tell any lies.

Mobile phone example same thing. Sure they can give you the full cost of the contract but if you got sold a Samsung Galaxy S8 when you only use your phone to make calls and send SMS then, again it's your own fault for not doing research and buying a phone that suits your needs, rather than an expensive phone that can do a bunch of things you don't need. I even find it quite funny that phone companies need to disclose total cost anyway. You can't take the monthly cost and multiply it by 24? Sure it's nice and EASIER to compare plan vs outright but it is not that critical that it should require legislative intervention. This is what's wrong with our world. Too much hand holding. People never get to harden themselves and learn from their own mistakes. Everything is spoon fed.

It is obvious we will never agree. You want laws to basically hold people's hands, live their lives for them and protect them for not being prudent and doing their own research. I think that as an adult you should look after yourself and not blame other people for taking advantage of you. You don't want to be taken advantage of? Guess what. Don't be a sucker. Do your research. Have some self control.

For the record, I didn't downvote.

        • @Xastros: hi Castro's, why do you have trouble not being rude, because I disagree with you? I certainly haven't been rude so that is basically a failing on your part. Likely it is because you realise I have a point. Your argument is basically that you need to look after yourself and that the govt can't or shouldn't do that for you. You simply repeat that argument each time you reply. It's not really a valid argument because the govt does in fact protect people in a lot of cases and this is a good thing. If it wasn't for the laws these companies would have poker machines and little packs of cigarettes for kids. According to what you are saying that would be fine and people should protect their kids themselves. So basically protection by law is required and is a good thing. The only valid argument is whether this case is too trivial or not to warrant a law. If you'd said that I would agree it is debatable but I think it is warranted.

        • @MikeKulls: Sorry but just because the government does something doesn't mean I agree with it or that they are right. You are correct in fact that I believe pokies should be allowed in 7/11 and in fact ice should be legal to smoke.

Why does someone else get to tell me what to put in my own body? Why are cigarette's OK but marijuana not OK when both are harmful? It's all arbitrary and makes little sense. So yes, I do disagree with laws that protect people from themselves. Law to wear seatbelts? LOL. If you care so little about yourself that you can't even be bothered putting on a seatbelt then you wear the consequences if you have a crash. No need to have a freaking law about it.

        • @Xastros: ok, if you thunk ice should be legal I don't think that is even on a reasonable level. There are plenty of very good reasons it's illegal which I'm sure you must understand. Even if you don't care about the kids who take it, it helps with your safety to not have people driving around on drugs or breaking into your house. I presume your ok with being run over by a drunk driver too as that wouldn't be illegal. Sorry, but what you're saying just doesn't make any sense.

        • @MikeKulls: I didn't say it should be legal while driving. I don't want people breaking into my house but not all ice users do that. Punish them when they actually do something to affect someone else like breaking into your house or driving under the influence. You don't think it's reasonable but I do. Like you said we are entitled to a difference of opinion.

EDIT: People who drink alcohol are more likely to be involved in violent crime and if they drive while drunk are more likely to kill people. We know there are more alcohol related vehicle crashes than all other drugs combined. Why do we not make alcohol illegal? Why don't we presume that a person who drinks alcohol will glass someone before driving home and killing someone else? The same way you presume an ice user will break into people's houses and cause a car crash?

        • @Xastros: so the laws are clearly working, the one thing that is legal is causing all the problems. Maybe alcohol should be illegal, who knows.

        • @MikeKulls: If you think alcohol is illegal, at least you are consistent which is good.

        • @Xastros: hmmmm, I didn't say alcohol is illegal.

        • @MikeKulls: I meant you think alcohol SHOULD be illegal. My bad.

    • Need to introduce a law to stop being able to sell/give kids toys with junk food

Sounds great on paper, but isn't in practice. The government doesn't represent you and never has. It must operate on the image that it does though, or there'd be riots in the streets.

Regulation (though legislation) only gives those regulating more power. More power to be bribed, more power for collecting fines and more power equals a heck of a lot more corruption…by those corporations and powerful people willing to pay off key government officials. If you those fines collected goes back to you (or is even used for good), you're kidding yourself. Just adds to the waste, fraud and corruption of the bottomless pit that is the public purse.

We already have enough central control. If we counted the per capita figure for all the government waste we are paying for (to save us from ourselves), we'd be freaking outraged. This is the Nanny State already. Because all this waste is part of doing business with the Taxing Thieves, we accept it. A hidden cost isn't as tangible as an in-your-face one.

The only thing that can stop the mass idiocy and mass fraud is eduction. ie. Talking about the thieves and crooks for what they are. And even that (free speech) is being shut down now. Anti-bullying laws. Hate speech laws. It's all happening as we speak under these 'safe' labels. So only the corporations (who have enough money to fight the truth being yelled out of the Little Man's mouth) can shape the minds of the masses with their version of truth (also known as lies).

Doctors have been corrupted by their sponsors. Everyone has.
      http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196%2817…

The only effective fightback is education. Legislation won't do it. Too easy to bribe the central source. Everyone suffers with the toxins approved and allowed to be on sale. It will never be solved by throwing more money at the corrupt bureaucracy.
