Budget proctologist tools look uncomfortable as all heck.

    • +6

      No it is not

      • -8

        Yes it is…

I bought a Doorbell for less than $20 at Bunnings.

        • +4

Hahaha yeah sorry I'm just trolling. Its all subject to personal opinion.

        • +3

@ModernPowerSolutions: if only JV realised that haha

        • +4

Can you link to the $20 doorbell to see if it is comparable?

  • +3

Ring doorbells are totally worth it.

    • -4

unless you set up your own camera for less than a quarter of the price…

      • I have a camera system and ring. My cameras don't ring my phone when a delivery man arrives and let me tell him to leave be package on the porch.

        • My cameras don't ring my phone

Some can be set up to notify you when motion is detected.

What if the postman 'knocks' instead of 'rings?'

        • @jv: Then you set it up to check for motion

        • @jv: yes they can, but I get an email when my cameras detect motion. I don't check it all the time. When my doorbell is rung, my phone rings, like a phone call and I answer it.

The postman has never knocked. He always rings the ring.

        • @Burnertoasty:

The postman has never knocked. He always rings the ring.

Ours always knocks and never rings the doorbell. Same with couriers.

        • @jv: Get a smarter postman

        • @Burnertoasty:

          Get a smarter postman

Won't happen whilst they are cutting their pay…

Best price I've seen for the doorbell and chime. Has anyone used the cams?

    • The video doorbell with proximity alert and video talk when not at home is one of the best things ever. Yes it is not cheap but really worth having as supplement to home security. And thanks, OP, I've just ordered a stick-up camera with solar panel.

  • +1

Does this thing allow you to record to your own server or are you locked in to subscribing and paying the ongoing fee?

    • +1

Unfortunately you are locked in to only using the Ring service

      • +2

        ok, thanks.

        • You don't have to pay them to store it in future if you only want real time

    • +4

This is exactly why it's a crazy price.

      You have to:

      1) Buy it.
      2) Insure it (to make sure you get it replaced when it gets stolen…)
      3) Subscribe to record.

So in year one, you're paying:

      1) +- $299
      2) $40/$150 for recording/insurance per year. (Basic plan of $40 insures it for 1 year, $150 for lifetime replacements)

It's a clever idea… but the ongoing subscription can add up over time… up to $450 in first year, then $150 each year after that if you want it replaced if stolen.

      • No one is going to steal your doorbell.

        • We haven't really had doorbells costing north of $200 before…

        • @rodericb: no one is going to steal your doorbell. If they do, move to a better suburb.

        • +1

That's what I thought but there are @#($&@#&$ thief's everywhere. Had some jackass stand outside my house scoping things out. I went out and asked him if I could help him and he said he was just trying to get mobile reception, which was already sus because the footpath is 5m away from our house. Next day, our wireless camera was gone, the @#*&$ bastard probably gumtree'd it. Should of suspected something when he was right next to the house. If anyone is scoping out your house, be EXTRA weary, they are trying to figure out their plan of action to rob your house.

        • @overshopper:
Did you get any footage of the theft??

      • Agree, the total cost for this camera is just very high due to the subscription fee.
Currently looking at the SKybell HD which has free 7 days cloud storage but not sure how it will work here as they don't really ship to Australia.
        Anyone used the Skybell before?

  • +1

Not that great of a price. I was in JB last week and asked sales person for best price and they did the doorbell for 200… Must be quite the margin in them

  • Couldn't these easily be stolen?
Or does it always record so that you would no who stole it?

    • +1

      no who stole it

If they didn't steal it, it doesn't matter if it recorded or not…

      • +2

lol jv. you are on the bell today

    • It can be stolen but stolen doorbell might be useless.

      • might be useless.

Gimli might be looking at it from the perspective of the 'stealer' rather than the 'stealee'

        • +1

          that's not my perspective

No, I'm not wrong… What I wrote is correct.

I heard you could claim a replacement if stooen. Not sure

beware, these things have huge issues with the video streaming. Google "ring doorbell black screen" before you waste your money.

    • website recommends you have an 1MB upstream connection for it to work properly…

      • Works fine at my place (Bigpond cable 100mb though)

Must say pretty happy, although would like to to have ring tones selectable by which button they press. I only have one button, but would like more,

        • (Bigpond cable 100mb though)

          Your upload speed is 2Mbps…

  • Get a hikvision camera, much cheaper

    • +1

Got them already … different animals

  • what's the solar panel for, and how can one get it for free?

  • Hey op are these local stock with tax invoice?

  • +1

Ring states that if these are stolen they'll replace them for free.

That said, I bought three of these (stick up cams) a couple of months ago and very quickly returned them. Despite saying 'night mode' on the box, their night vision is awful. Unusable without lighting. They also have about a 6 second delay from detecting motion to actually recording - which often means that whatever caused the motion is long gone.
Also had connection issues. And the fee to subscribe to their service is per camera so quickly adds up!

My advice - save your money and get Arlo Pro instead.
Much better night vision. Much reduced recording delay (although not negligible), and no connectively issues. They have a free plan (7 days of videos are saved) and videos are also saved to USB stick (if you plug one into the router).

    • Only Arlo Pro base stations support USB recording.

Arlo doesn't exactly act as a doorbell either.

Every camera in my Arlo system suffer from terrible lag and need resetting every few days due to the night vision not working at all.

And really, without the rest of the system, what is that "if stolen" clause really worth? Who goes around stealing doorbell cameras?

Save your money? This is $225 for a doorbell. A basic 1 camera Arlo Pro system is about $450. Don't know where you learnt maths…

If you read the title this is also a deal for the Ring Stick Up camera. As clearly stated I am comparing my experience with the ring stick up cam and the Arlo Pro.

I'm not claiming that the Arlo Pro is any cheaper. I just don't think the ring stick up cameras work as advertised and they are pretty useless.
My 'save your money' comment is meant to mean save this money and put it towards something that actually works (such as the Arlo Pro).

I actually also have a ring pro doorbell, and this works well - I went for the pro because its power supply reduces issues with lag and brightness of night vision.

I hope that needlessly ripping into strangers on the internet and insulting their intellectual ability makes you feel good about yourself.

        • I hope that needlessly ripping into strangers on the internet and insulting their intellectual ability makes you feel good about yourself.

Oh, the martyrdom. I hardly ripped into you or your intellectual ability. Please feel free to point out any part where I insulted you personally and made jest at your "intellectual ability." The "ripping into" part I am most interested in.

Downvote all you like. I don't lose sleep over imaginary internet points.

          My points…
Only Arlo Pro supports USB. (Fact, no ripping there)
Arlo isn't a doorbell (Fact. It doesn't offer a doorbell add on for the system, just cameras. Ring offers both.)
I've had 11 replacements for Arlo cameras on a 5 camera system. (Fact. Unless you are Netgear, or represent them, my disdain for this product is aimed at them. Easy to google Arlo camera problems and get lots of hits.)
Stolen cameras. Is this really an issue? Unless you are the one stealing them, why does that bother you? What does one do with this stolen camera? Sounds like marketing bullshit to me.
Save your money? How? By buying a more expensive and equally flawed system that has as many, if not more issues.

          Needlessly ripping… sheesh.

For the record, I would not buy Ring either due to the subscription model and piss poor reviews they receive. But the suggestion of Arlo being better is just wrong. I would put them both in the same boat.

  • These might work well with Echo Show. I've seen videos where people say "Who is at the front door" and the Echo Show shows the video on the intercom. Quite handy, however the ability to "steal" it quite easily and the ongoing monthly payment is an issue.

  • Any xiaomi copy? The pricetag is ludicruos it's like made by yeezy.
