Canon Pixma MP990 for $245 at Harvey Norman (VIC)

140

Long time reader, first time poster. I went to my local HN at Watergardens VIC today and saw the reduced price tag of $245. RRP is $449, MSY normally sell them for $325 so looked like a good deal to me. Next I went a few doors up to OW to price match + beat by 5% so I picked it up for $232! I thought this was a pretty good price!

If your a long time reader like
you say, you should know that most ppl don't like reading "first post, be gentle"
    messages

He didn't say be gentle, did he?

      • how do you know its a he?

        • im giving you a positive purely for the fact that you didn't add "please be nice!"

that and its a decent price :D

    $245? That's heaps cheap.

  • What's so good about this printer? $250 for a a4 wireless inject seems pretty standard to me.
Not trying to be negative, I know very little about printers

    • +1

you know its a multi function yeah?

usually pictures are better quality on better quality printers..

Wouldn't buy anything unless it could do dual sided scanning/copying though of multiple pages, (as that seems to be a pretty good benchmark)

      mostly certain this one doesn't…

side note harris technology has them on clearance but at 100 bux more its laughable!

      • Thanks for the replies guys, not really sure why i get a neg for asking a valid question.

        • fair question, ill +ive you for asking a valid question.

The MP990 has a good review in this months PC Authority. The only reason they didn't fully recommend it was price, they quoted $355 as the purchase price. Their lab winner was the MP960 with a purchase price of $209. For an extra $36 you get a far better printer. I have the older MP960 and very happy with its performance (although a little thirsty on the ink). Great for scanning negatives and converting documents to pdf as well as printing. Unlike some other brands Canon don't seem to add a faxing ability to its multifunction printer range so this may be an issue for some.

The MX series has faxing/ADF/duplex…the MP is more photo/media oriented I think

I have this printer, it's good quality, but be careful, eats trough ink like an ink monster.

It cleans its printer heads even when you scan a document!

If you're thinking of buying this printer, seriously consider getting CISS (continuous ink supply system) for it, for example Rihac, otherwise you'll regret your purchase.

Btw, it also has decent scanner with ability to scan old 35mm films!

    • Thanks for the heads-up about CISS, looks like a great product!

    • Agree with the ink issue, I have an MP980 which I think is basically the same printer. Ended up getting soe refillable carts from ebay and generic ink from DX which work fine. Got it mainly for the film scanner which works well.

      • yeah i got an old i560 put a CISS on that, but wanted a good printer to print good pics, so bought an mp980… man it chews though the ink we hardly use it and burn though the ink… cant really afford it anymore so thinking about putting a CISS on it. (at 100 Bux a load of ink its redicioulous!)

This is what I bought, actually got cheaper now US$23 for refillable carts, dead easy to use, lots of placed to get ink, except the grey, cheaper than CISS, but does the same

          • @cooperdog: schweet, thanks, will def consider it, will have a chat to the misses whos printer it is, easier than dealing with the ribbon of the CISS…
            pretty good price too.

          • @cooperdog: copperdog that looks a great idea, where do you normally buy the inks from, I would invest in a ciss but with kids it could get a bit messy…

That's an excellent price, got mine from office works for $300 about 3 months ago. As other have said, this thing eats through the ink very quickly as it cleans the head when you scan, after printing, every time you turn it on pretty much. Invested in a CISS system, works like a charm. Did a review about the whole thing if anyone is interested:

  • Anyone got a scanned copy of a receipt at this price they can publish so I can go to OW / HN and get them to price match?

    Thanks

    • I can scan mine if you like?

    • Won't they call the store to make sure they have stock. While OW are at it they can check the price over the phone.

      • Yes, yesterday they rang HN and checked the price plus stock availability.

    • I just called Officeworks Artarmon and they "might" be able to match the receipt you posted, no guarantees though! They wanted proof of the Harvey Norman offer.

Here is a pic of the tag in store @ HN.
