Hi guys,

I was looking for cheap teeth cleaning/scaling and came across these guys. Cheapest I could find elsewhere was $99 and these guys are $75. My local dentists are over $170 for this.
They have other opening special too like free dental check-up, gap free exam and clean with private medical insurance, etc. I and my wife had it and found them friendly.

Have a look at their specials page: http://shinefamilydentalsurgery.com.au/specials

  • including 'with private insurance' in the title would be handy..

    • +2

It is without any private insurance. With private insurance, you have nothing to pay.

My dentist been doing that for years, throw in consultation as well. I'm in Queensland though, could be different interstate.

    • +1

Some of the dentists offering free consultation in Melbourne as well. But its only first consultation is free. If you will visit them next time they will charge you fee. but shine family dental surgery is not charging fee for consultation whether it is your first visit or second.

  • cheap. Xrays included?

Doubt that includes xrays, places that do package deals generally include in the description something like 'xrays if necessary'. I know one corporate chain that regularly does gap-free checkups/xrays/clean (or sub $200 for those without insurance - still including xrays!), and it's well publicised as including xrays if necessary (and they're clear to state the clean is a regular scale/polish, not a periodontal cleaning).

      • Man they're desperate to get people through the door… Don't Groupon take like 50% of the takings too? :O
It's hard to sell these things as well - what happens if the patient needs a deep cleaning? You can't give them a normal cleaning, but they've already prepaid for one… I just checked the T&Cs and there isn't anything that indicates anything about inapplicable services. :/

Well, best of luck to them…!

it seems like you are a dentist criticizing other dentist . Why they are doing that for so cheap. If they are so desperate then they will definitely give them a best service to retain that patient.

        • @dilraj:

How many Groupon users have received good service from other places like restaurants? You and I both know many people have received rude or indifferent service when using vouchers… and I've personally known people who have used a Groupon for a 'normal' clean, and didn't even receive a good one of those.

A dental cleaning is a form of treatment, and that can't be prescribed without an examination. Selling these vouchers isn't great healthcare, particularly when so many Australians suffer from gum disease.

These patients only stay if you are cheap - they don't care about service. At $99 a patient, the clinic can't afford to pay all their outgoings without pushing these through in 20 minute increments, and that is most definitely not enough time to do a comprehensive. After Groupon takes their cut, that's cut even more.

Yes these are loss leaders - but I've seen enough of these patients to know they'll come in, get told they need a deep cleaning, only want their 'normal' cleaning, and won't book back in for any work ("Oh it doesn't hurt" "It's never bothered me" "I'd rather have a baby" or "These people are just trying to upsell me now that they have me in the chair") - resulting in just a straight loss.

TL;DR Pre-selling actual treatment is probably not a very good idea, particularly if AHPRA were to start investigating

EDIT: Just noticed you're new to OZB (as well as being affiliated, thank you for being honest about that), so perhaps you might not be familiar with the rather terrible service people have often received when using a voucher.

  • my dentist in Tarneit which is close by has been doing that for years with NO out of pocket for xrays , checkup, clean and fluoride with my extras
