You can probably find really cheap ones on eBay. Some say the quality of ink isn't as good so it can damage the printer head quicker. I bought an $80 brother 1.5 year ago and have been using eBay cartridges since I got it and it's still running great. Even if the printer does break, you would have saved a lot of money from not buying genuine cartridges. I've gone through a around 4x4 lots of cartridges. So that's 16 cartridges and they cost me about $40 all up. Genuine Brother ones cost about $70 for a pack of 4, so that's $210. So you'd just be better off buying eBay cartridges, use the printer till it dies, then get a new one.
I have an earlier model. Thanks to my very low volume of printing, I was able to roughly calculate that self-cleaning cycles add about $60/year to the cost of the printer, based on Calidad cartridges (middle ground price-wise between the genuine stuff and eBay cheapies).

Typical with most printers though it comes down to running costs.
