good prices but only for those that can do pickup or don't live near MSY/UMART etc.

  • Put store and the actual price in title.

Price really gone down a lot so the 6xxx series should be very close.

Smart decision by pccasegear as the first release wave is the 6850/6870 is the equivalent upgrades of 5770 and 5750 which are your 'bang for buck' cards. They are reported to be slower or at the speed of 5870/5850 but probably a lot cheaper to produce.

    • +2

yes, which means you'll be getting near 5850 performance for a 5770 price - yes please.

  • +1

with the aussie dollar being so good these should be even cheaper…

In other words waste of money buying a new card right now.

Why should it be cheaper? I just checked a couple of US retailers and the price for a 5850 didn't go below $250US (without rebates). Explain how you could import something at that price, whilst paying shipping, taxes, duty, etc, and still make a profit?

It will be a very long time before we get computer products for the same price the US does. Don't expect any miracles, we do live on an island. :P

its not about importing. It about the fact that if retailers in the US can sell them at that price so should retailers in australia with the aud almost at parity. so the cost price for both retailers would be similar. just that the margin is more in aus. shipping cost are very little when you consider the number that get shipped at a time.

Remember also that they get shipped from somewhere in Asia (they aren't manufactured in the States) to EITHER the States or Australia.

Shipping might even be cheaper as Australia is closer to Asia than the States.

Their cost price should be similar (not every retailer in the States is a mega retailer!).

Therefore if a brave Australian retailer were to price the same margin as their US counterpart then given the current ex rate, stuff SHOULD be cheaper in Australia!

          • @Cap N: $250 + $25 GST = $275.

GST is always the killer here, so these things should always be 10% more here vs US.

Agree it is very annoying when we pay far more (for instance this nice Lexus I like, $50k in the US, $125k here — wtf?), 10-20% though is nothing to cry over.

          • +1

@Cap N: It should, but I imagine that there are far more buyers in the USA than Australia, so they can afford to bulk buy huge shipments with discounts. Obviously not as feasible in Australia, but we can at least get as close as we can.

AMD wont be launching the 6XXX series with thier ATI Tag, they will be launching these with the AMD Tag. I think this is a pretty damn good price!
