wow .. 5tb in a portable drive.. this thing looks chunky.. must have lots of platers

    • +1

Lol how slim can you make a 5TB portable hard drive?

      • +4

In early 1999 i purchased a 6.2GB 3.5" desktop hard drive for $199 from ARC Computers Penrith. Was hard to imagine back then that they they could make a 500GB portable hard drives let alone 5000GB drives.

          Hahaha wow how technology develops!!
It is just like the PlayStation 2 had an 8MB memory card and I never ran out of storage on it and I had heaps of stuff on there xD
          Getting nostalgic now lol

        • +3

Yes, those were the days. In 1991/92 I bought a Quantum 240MB (yes MB) hard drive for $1,200. They had previously been selling for nearly $2,500 and the one I bought hit the (at the time) Holy Grail of pricing benchmark of $5 per MB. I used it on a BBS system along with a Netcomm M5 modem that I bought for $2,200. Modems were very expensive in those days but it was 9,600 baud.

@cryptowiz: I still remember my $4200 486DX2/66 with 240MB HDD, 4x CDROM, and an awesome 800x600 Res Sony Trinitron Monitor LOL

        • My buddy purchased a 16gb thumbdrive when they first came out- from harvey norman for $1499.

      • You can get a 5TB SSD drive 3.5" form factor…

I think it's actually two drives sandwiched together into one enclosure nope, that was for the first generation, which had two drives configured in RAID0 and used a USB to Raid adapter.

I think these drives are 15mm tall.

  • Would this work on my Samsung Smart TV?

    • Don't see why not.

  • +2

That's a lot of data to lose when you drop it

    • +10

yeh the bigger they are, the harder they fall….

a 80gb drive would just float down to the ground

      • +1

How much heavier are 5TB of bytes comparing to 80GB ?

    • You'd have to drop it pretty hard to actually damage the drive inside. The actual drives are rated to about 100G's IIRC, and the casing acts as a cushion.

      • +1

I dare you to prove it.

Dropped a 2tb WD my passport out of my car (fell off the seat onto concrete) and it developed a clicking noise when started. My PC has only recognised it 3 times from the million attempts at using it

    • I would personally be using this as my back up and only use maybe once a month to back up. Saves having to get a power cord just to back up.

      • 5TB desktop drive is half price, innit ?

        • Do you mean 5TB desktop drives are $100? If so where?

      • +3

This deal is still active for anyone who wants a gigantic 8TB of storage.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324732

$234 aussie delivered, which is an additional 34 dollars for a Desktop type backup drive. That's around $30 dollars per TB of storage, very good value.

You can also shuck the drive for a Seagate SMR archival drive, which might be of interest to those running a NAS.

  • I've never ordered from Warehouse1 as I've seen a lot of negative comments online. Can anyone (not associated with the company) confirm if they have had a good experience as I might just bite the bullet on this deal.

    • +4

Have bought from them a few times during the Ebay 20% off sales and had no issues each time.

    • +2

I've done two orders through them and both were good experiences. Good prices too.

    • +1

I also have ordered from them & orders arrived each time as expected. Have not had any issues to see how their support goes.

  • Sigh. I just bought a 4Tb and now there's a 5… WD or Seagate?

    • +1

It's Seagate Sherlock … as it says in the description. Lol

      • what size is it?

      • As in the 4Tb j bought is a WD, which is supposedly a better brand.

      • What colour? Who's selling it?

  • is this a smr drive and what rpm is the spindle speed?

    • For anyone interested, it seems to be 5400 rpm smr drive according to a review. However hard specifications were not listed anywhere I looked which is unusual.

      • Aparently its TGMR which is not SMR. Have no idea what TGMR actually means!!!

  • PRESENT Code isn't working for me - says cannot be applied.

  • Is this a 3.5" one or 2.5" one and also can anyone comment how loud it is?

    • Its 2.5. Cant comment on noise level.

Title should say 'External' not 'Portable'. Portable Hard drives draw power from the USB port, Externals require a separate power cable.

    • Whats your point? This is portable without any additional power supply!!

      • :O True!

    • Well technically this is called a "Portable external HDD" (with the 2.5" drive) and while the one with the 3.5" drive is called "Desktop external HDD".
