gee that seems like a really good price :o

    • Not when currency conversion for the US one is $750. Australia tax FTW

      • Whats the HTC warranty like? International or local?

        • +2

Its really good in my experience.

They pick it up and send it to sydney and then send it back to you.

        • From what I've read it is really bad. A lot of vive owners get stuffed around by HTC.

        • +1

@JigBew: Pretty much this, if you buy from MS at least you can return to them I guess.

        • @samfisher5986: Is that with one purchased overseas or locally? Kinda the only thing hanging over the head of the US one is the deal, their warranty states it would be covered in the region it was sold so not sure if support would be local or not :/

Some forum posts say they had to ship the unit to the US and then it would only be shipped back to a US based address :/

        • @brent3000:

Mine was purchased from the AU Vive website.

I've heard bad things about US support, not AU.

      • Cheapest I saw posted from the US is about $850, was posted on here a few weeks ago.

This is the cheapest currently in Australia I believe.

      • Isn't that the tax free price in the states?

    • -7

Why bother. By the end of the year your phone can pretty much do what the vive can an 1/10th the price. http://www.techradar.com/news/zeiss-vr-one-connect-puts-virt…

      • I'd be waiting for reviews before betting on that one.

      • I think your phone is going to have a hell of time fully tracking your hands in front of you and behind your back.

        • You have a separate periphery for that. See the zeiss one connect.

With at least 3 Windows Mixed Reality HMD's coming this month or close to it it from Dell, Asus and others priced at ~$460 USD (including controllers) I wouldn't be buying a Vive ATM.

Because these helmets are "PSVR style" (comfortable), 1440x1440 per eye at 90Hz and include 6DoF out of the box you may have buyers remorse!

    • Can you elaborate more on this?

      • -1

Yes please I'd like to know more

        • +1

pretty much ACER, DELL and Asus will release Mixed reality headsets, their own VR headsets for around $500 AUD, its newer and might be better

        • +1

          @TheMoDz:

$500 AUD is very off the mark given the sort of price differences we see from USD RRP to AUD RRP. I'd expect it to be more in the $700 to $800 AUD range.

        • @Zaptruder: yea I didnt check properly, the developer editions are the $500 aud ones

        • Set up my Rift a couple of days ago. Blown away!

Best piece of tech I've bought in years.

Do you really think these will be better and cheaper?

        • @chromium: Got mine a few weeks ago. I am blown away, it is astounding! I honestly can't see these ones being released as a better product for cheaper. The rift pick up was a great deal and I regret nothing. The thing I like most about the rift are the touch controllers. The design is super comfortable and makes the experience more realistic. I haven't tried the vive controllers however.

        • @chromium:

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Definitely looks better specs-wise but what made me decide to wait are the facts that they're comparable or cheaper than the Rift, coming out in a few months (hopefully) and most of all, no external sensors.

    • +3

Worth noting that the Windows MR HMDs won't be compatible with Steam VR out of the gate, and that the controllers have less robust tracking when they're outside of the frontal camera cone of the HMD.

As a developer, I'll be picking up a WMR HMD, but as a gamer, I'd still recommend either the Vive or Rift for now. As an Oz Bargainer though… well, it's only a bargain if it's what you actually wanted. If it's not, then it's just wasted money.

    USB 2.0? Cold

  • Beginner question- do I need an insanely powerful PC to run anything through these?

    • +2

Pretty much. Especially a high end GPU.

      • Much reliance on the CPU? I've got an old X5650 (Xeon, 4Ghz OC) and a 290X. Is that going to struggle?

    • Mid-High end, minimum GTX 970

      • +1

I would recommend a 1070 minimum. Some of the more intensive games will require this, not to mention in the coming year or so games will likely become more graphically intensive.

  • Was cheaper from B&HPhotoVideo in this deal recently- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325240

Although I'm not sure what the international warranty is like for the vive and a warranty is very important for the vive since it's very easy to accidentally break it.

  • I got an Oculus Rift + Oculus Touch for US$299 during Amazon's Prime Day sale a couple of months back. Is the Vive really worth double the price? I'm guessing the price will fall dramatically over the next few months, particularly with a few new competitors entering the VR headset market soon.

    • +1

I'd expect price to see some drops, maybe not a changed RRP though. Look forward to seeing some competition and the next stage of VR tech.

I've used both, own a Rift and I consider the Rift+Touch+3rd Sensor and the Vive to be side-grades of each other. Both have pros and cons and are very similar to each other. Even when they were the same price, I struggled to pick between them.

The Vive is absolutely not worth double the price, unless:
      - you're a developer and need the Vive for testing
      - you have a very large play space (more than 4m x 4m)
      - you wear glasses that don't fit in the Rift.
      - you really hate having USB cables for your sensors but don't mind needing AC Power cables.
      - you want to burn another few hundred dollars on the TP-Cast wireless addon which currently doesn't have mic support.

If you already have a Rift, buy a third sensor and call it a day :)

    • How do you like the RIFT? for $299US i think i mightve grabbed one.
What games do you use it for mainly?

      • +1

        Mate. Get one.
I bought one in the Summer of Rift sale (~$600) which finishes some time today.
I had buyer's remorse when the pay came out of my account, but when it arrived a week later my mind completely changed. I'd probably even pay double now.

It only arrived on Friday (and I'm now away on a work trip) but I spent ages playing Robo Recall (this will blow your mind), SuperHot, The Climb, and Dead and Buried. The standout for me, though, was Quill - it's just a painting app but you can draw in 3D space. I have no artistic ability but it's amazing how fun and immersive it is.

If you've got a PC that can handle it, buy a rift.
If you don't - buy a PC and a rift.
(you could build a VR ready PC for less than $800 if you wanted)

      • +1

I have only played a couple games but straight up, Robo Recall is amazing. Comes included in the Rift bundle. The game was just designed around the oculus rift. Very realistic, great gameplay and graphics and the game can be replayed to enjoy more game time (leaderboard scores and different modes and mods).

  • if you play racing sims, IMO oculus rift is just as good if not preferable and its only ~600 compared to 900

    • Why would anyone have such a narrow interest and limit themselves though?

      • because $300 and racing games is life.

And rifts sale is over now so too bad.

  • If you are going to buy this, make sure you will use it, it is a lot of expensive clutter to keep around. That is why I bought a daydream phone, if I don't use the VR, I will still use the phone.

    • +2

Daydream VR and regular VR are not at all the same.

  • I got a VIVE since launch, very cool device with a lot of good games now, I paid nearly $1500 to import it last year
if you want to know what it like, you can demo them at MS store in Sydney Pitt St

I am not a big gamer I use it occasionally and still love it every time

    • He says with a name called HS….

      Blizzard needs hearthsone in VR

  • If you get this or the Oculus Rift there is a really good game called Onward, available on the Steam store. It is similar to Counterstrike but in virtual reality. You need to use real movements to turn your body, crouch, lean or go prone, change magazines and operate weapons. It is an amazing experience.

  • So do these VR headsets allow you to use them as a monitor? So like just plug in an original XB1 and use it like you would a TV? Or does it need to have other bits and pieces on the input side of things?

    • +1

You need a PC for these VR headsets. You cannot plug an Xbox in and use it as a TV.

      • Fair enough. Thanks for your reply :)

  • Needs more games to become mainstream, too expensive for the mainstream to buy. I worry they will abandon vr gaming soon as a result. Maybe that's the reason for such a price drop. I want to see vr succeed, but I'm not interesting in buying one now to play a vr kitchen hand game.. Also, needs to be wireless somehow.

    • Its already wireless and VR gaming is not going anywhere.

      • Probably should mention that you need to buy a $300 USD addon for wireless (TP-Cast), and atm that thing doesn't even have microphone support over the wireless.

In terms of content, I own a Rift and I actually have a backlog, I don't feel like there's a shortage of content at all. However, you have to be willing to explore outside of your comfort zone in terms of genre, and also not expect AAA franchises.

  • TBH there's not much reason to buy this over the $570 rift unless you have a really big playspace. The rift has better controllers and headset and has amazing exclusive games that can be played with vive but don't perform as well as they do on the rift.

  • Bought one at launch, and my recommendation if you're thinking about getting one is to make sure you have enough room to set it up. Ideally you'd want to dedicate a whole room to the Vive. I turned one of my spare bedrooms into a VR room.

Also I would recommend wall mounting the lighthouses instead of using them on tripods, this minimises the chance of you tripping over cables, and with some cable management, will give a cleaner look as well. I use low profile wall mounts very similar to the ones on this eBay listing.

Otherwise enjoy the Vive, I had a blast playing games like Super Hot VR and Rec Room

  • The vive is a bit of work to set up too. Need to attach the two sensors to lighting stands (we bought from DJ City). So it is not plug and play out of the box.

Runs on an alienware laptop, but was hard at first as it didn't initially recognise the 3D card.

    • Maybe if you rent its difficult.
