Probably better with the 10% code.

  • wow! 5.5 years old!

Next time we'll see antiques being sold on Ozbargain.

      wrong.

Computers have not changed so much since then. The 2nd-gen i5 is 80% as fast as a brand new Optiplex with 7th-gen i5. ie you will not notice the difference.

The most obvious thing missing is USB-3, but you could add a cheap PCIE card for that.

Integrated graphics have improved a lot more, but if you are gaming you'll probably want to add a 1/2-height video card anyway.

Its not like the olde days where speeed doubled every 2 or 3 years.

      • Ideally would like this size, with USB 3, HDMI and Wifi…

aware of any good models that sell this?

      • +2

I was interested in your claim so I checked it out. Assuming the i5-7400 directly supersedes the i5-2400:

        http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7400-vs-I…

This website claims the current gen is only 20% faster, their claim is crowd sourced data so is as reliable as you treat that.

But this is a low end CPU to begin with so let's check out a decent priced CPU:

        http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-vs-…

In this case it's 42% faster.

Take what you will from that. In the case of this type/priced CPU, I agree with you.

        • A desktop i5 is not a low end CPU, it's higher end than the majority of processors in use. I quite happily run an i3 in my desktop, I don't play games, but I do edit images.

@macrocephalic: Whatever your subjective opinion on what low end encompasses makes no difference to my point.

I never claimed it was slow. I'm just highlighting the age of the refurbs. I've seen blown capacitors off dell desktops to know that buyers must consider the risk of buying old second hand.

I've seen blown capacitors off dell desktops

of this vintage, or back from the capacitor plague days? (to 2007)

  • If anyone is looking for an ultra-small with Windows 10, this is good:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-990-USFF-Intel-Quad…

He takes offers. Only 4GB, but a spare ram slot. Has a mini-pcie slot for a wifi card, but you need to add an antenna too.

    • Would love to know what the new model of this is called - Ideally would like this size, with USB 3, HDMI and Wifi…

    • $28 shipping from WA though.

  • These are fantastic for anyone only wanting to browse the web and type documents. Bought a similar one for my parents a few days ago.

    Note: No HDMI on these.

      • Keeping in mind you lose audio this way if your expecting it through HDMI

        • No, audio over DP->hdmi works fine. Except on a Mac for some reason.

          Are you thinking of DVI?

        • @manic:
Agreed. DP-HDMI audio works just fine everywhere I've tried it, even with a Mac laptop I tried a while back.

Also, DVI does support audio. It just depends on the card.

        • @whitehall:

Ah fair enough. I should have researched a little more before making that comment - your right, looks like it passes through

        • +1

          @v00d00 AU:

I was super surprised when I found out myself! One day I forgot to plug the audio from my computer into the TV, and only had an HDMI-DVI cable. Sound was coming through and I was so confused. I had no idea it could do that!

  • Is this the best value budget pc out there?

    • +1

Yes, this is an amazing price.

      • Do u have this, how is web browsing and word docs

        • you wouldn't tell the difference between this and a new pc in those applications.

A cheap low profile graphics card would make a big difference, can be had for around $40 or so

          @anzacpaul:

A cheap low profile graphics card would make a big difference

A cheap SSD would make a bigger difference…

        • @jv: Link to ssd?

        • @SimpleRoger:

          Link to ssd?

          http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/144-ssd

8GB Ram and an SSD will fly… You don't need to upgrade the graphics card for "web browsing and word docs"

        • @jv: For PC for web browsing and word docs, but heaps of tabs what kind of dell optiplex would u think would suit me, possibly a little bit of gaming.

        • @SimpleRoger:

possibly a little bit of gaming.

It depends on what you mean by gaming… Then you do need to start to consider graphics cards…

        • @jv: Actually don't mind that just a value pc for casual computing, but one that doesn't lag when multiple tabs or programs are open.

        • @SimpleRoger:

I got one of the Optiplex 9010 from Bneacttrader on eBay during one of the 20% off sales… (around $200) I don't play high end games though, except for a bit of minesweeper.

        • +2

          @jv:
          Minesweeper @8k/60fps is awesome.

        • @jv: Is there a deal right now? Links?

        • @jv: Also will the I7 help with web browsing and word docs?

        • @SimpleRoger:

Also will the I7 help with web browsing and word docs?

Nope… i5 is plenty… 8Gb ram would be good. SSD will make all the difference.

If you're not in a hurry, just wait for the next 20% off deal…

        • @jv: U know when that will be?

        • @SimpleRoger:

I'll let you know after the crystal ball I ordered from ebay arrives.

        • @anzacpaul: The only thing I can find anywhere near that is a Gigabyte 2GB GT 710 @ $55ish.
What did you have in mind?

        • +1

          @Speckled Jim:

Did you check MSY? but yeah something like that would be perfect.

        • @anzacpaul: Yes, I didn't consider the 1GB passive one though.

It's a question of whether one wants to use the second slot as the fan version is slimmer to allow that.

I should stop being such a miserable cheapskate!

    Got one. Thanks OP.
