[QLD] AGL 26% off Electricity - Retention Offer after Leaving for Alinta (12months)

620

QUEENSLAND ONLY

After deciding to sign up for Alinta Energy, I received a call from AGL's customer retention team (21 days later but prior to the meter read) who decided to better the already very attractive offer made by Alinta. They started the call offering 26% off Electricity and an extra 2% off Gas to bring my discount to 8%. After asking the operator if that was really the best deal they could do, they come back offering 14% on Gas. After further investigation - I determined that Origin was by far the cheapest for me in QLD for GAS SUPPLY as the rates were way cheaper. (Usage First 25.51 - $0.0308 Usage after 25.51 $0.0284 Daily Supply $1.0833 Discount (with DD option) 8% )

New Electricity Schedule is as Follows
26% Pay on Time discount
12 Months Agreement but No Contract exit penalties, Quarterly Billing
Tarriff 11: 26c Ex GST (Same Prince as Alinta)
Supply Charge $1 Ex GST (1c ex GST more than Alinta)

EDIT: Discounts were Applied Immediately by AGL - I didnt have to wait for the scheduled Porting Date which was still 45 days away.

      • Ah ok I'll try that! Thanks!!

  • Is the AGL 26% offer for usage only or includes daily supply charge?

    • +1

Just usage. Only QLD off whole bill is RED and CLICK (red is cheap for low usage households click is expensive but ok for large solar customers 7kw+ systems)

      • also powershop at 15%.

    • usage only

  • +2

If you live in Victoria, look at Pacific Hydro Retail. No discount/pay on time bullshit, just low rate.

My rate with them is 79.2cent daily supply + 19.36cent per KWH (Both GST inclusive). No late payment fee. Just so good, Origin tried to counter me with 42% discount on usage but screw them. And on top of this Pacific Hydro is 100% renewable (if you care).

    EDIT: Rate page http://energythatcould.com.au/energy-plans/pricing-fact-shee…

    • Just did this switch a few weeks ago. Best part is the rates are locked for two years. I don't see prices getting any cheaper. AGL called and tried to counter with a 44% discount. If you have to discount that much then you are way overpriced. Pacific Hydro on a good thing with a simple no nonsense low rate.

    • That is insanely good. It looks like your distributor is Citipower so do you live in Melbourne CBD/Inner suburbs?
I am with Ausnet who are absolute ripoffs so the retailers have to pass on their shitty prices too…
I switched from Red Energy to Powershop to Pacific Hydro and am currently in the process of switching to Globird Energy, they are pretty much the same price as Pacific Hydro and also take Post Bill Pay as payment ;)
But yes Pacific Hydro is a lean operation, no bull with discounts etc just low prices :)

      • Mine is Jenema, I live in North Eastern Suburb. I just had a look Globird for my distributor, Supply charge is 2 cent cheaper but usage is 1 cent more, so i guess PHR is still the best option for me. It's a bit pity that they don't have Post Bill Pay so I can take advantage of Amex, it's fine given that they provide very good business. Happy customer so far

    • Pacific Hydro "Does not currently offer GreenPower to residential customers"

      Check the greenelectricityguide.org.au

      • Ah my bad, their generator business is 100% renewable the retailer side still source from the general Electricity Market.

        • Still better than the big 3 - although AGL is probably going to be up there soon with the millions of $ they are putting into renewables right now.

  • -1

Why not consider Momentum where available, no discount bull…. and 100% renewable. Their rates are clear and cheap.

    • That's false, at least for our area (NSW distributor: Ausgrid).

Below charges (not credits) include GST:
      Momentum
      Daily Supply Charge 90.563c
Metering charge per day: 251.647c (WTF is this?!!)
First 6.57534 kWh per day: 30.723c
Next 15.34247 kWh per day: 30.107c
      Remaining peak usage: 29.799c
      Welcome credit: $50
      Solar feed-in tariff: 7c

      AGL base rates:
      Supply charge: 92.4c/day
      Peak: 31.9c/kWh
      Feed-in tariff: 11.1c/kWh
      Once-Off account credit: $50

AGL discounts of >20% on usages easily take the total down below Momentum's. On top of that, Momentum provides woeful solar FIT.

      • @downtime "Metering charge per day: 251.647c (WTF is this?!!)"

Think you are looking at a business tariff there mate.

        • Nope, I did a detailed quote on Momentum site, put exact HOME address, chose a NMI out of 2 numbers (the other one redirected to contact page) and that "Metering charge per day" appeared in their quote.

        • @downtime: could be smart Meter install charge over 1 year

    • @vincib They are close to 100% renewable in terms of Generation, but you don't get your power offset unless you sign up to their green power plan (higher rates again).

Please excuse my ignorance but I'm just not quite getting it. Is this deal specifically for current AGL customers who have churned to another supplier recently? I'm currently with Origin but am moving house this month so am very interested in squeezing every dollar out of these bastards!

    • @Hinee a lot of people here would like to see how you go with Origin, their closest competition is AGL. So if you can talk to their retention team and see if they can match alinta or AGL @ 25% (their rates are cheaper tho so 23% is about equal - see how you go anyway and let us know!)

  • For WA, we can get up to 30% from alinta/kleenheat
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319864

  • Damn. Just signed up for 12 months @ 24% discount pay on time. Should have negotiated a bit more!

    • Call back? Your plan won't have an exit fee (most likely)

      • Thanks. Will call back tomorrow.

  • Same thing happened to us when we tried to leave for Smart Energy. They offered us 44% off for electricity and 30% off for gas to stay…. we must have been on very high tariffs.

  • It says the rates can vary at any time. Does that mean, for example, they can make the daily charge $2 instead of $1 in 2 weeks time and you are still locked in for 12 months ?
The 26% is locked but not the rates.

    • +1

I also noticed that just now. But it also says on my plan page "Termination fee: No early termination fee." - That sounds to me this 12 month contract thing is a bit useless, they aren't gurantee their rates, and we are free to go if they try to hike the price

      • That's the same with most of them now. It's not really a contract, more just them setting a term for that particular discount. It means that if after 12 months you don't renew for a different plan then you lose that discount and drop back to full prices.

    • I received 26% off without contract.

Also they can't change those fees as AGL and Origin are binded by Energex rates or something along those lines.

      • I thought the fixed charges aligned with Energex finished a while back, now it's free market to charge what ever in Qld.

        • All your rates are not fixed (unless you found a fixed rate plan - not many around this year). Next rate rise is expected in July next year (or January in VIC)

        • @bobzor bargain:
A while back for qld, all sellers had the same rates, they couldn't offer anything else. But it stopped a year or two back.

SUNSPOT UPDATE: Huge sunspot AR2673, which materialized with shocking speed over the weekend, is seething with activity. Today in Romania, solar photographer Maximilian Teodorescu captured this snapshot of plasma currents surging inside the sunspot's magnetic canopy—apparently on the verge of an explosion:

    • 12% chance between 2012 and 2022. Made it 5 years so far, 5 to go.

      • A SOLAR STORM IS COMING: On Sept. 4th at approximately 2030 UT, active sunspot AR2673 hurled a CME toward Earth: movie. NOAA analysts are still modeling the cloud's trajectory. At first glance, the CME appears likely to reach our planet on Sept. 6th with the possibility of moderately strong (G2-class) geomagnetic storms when it arrives. Stay tuned for an updated forecast

Well, contact AGL via web chat. Were not willing to match Alinta discounts, only offered to change me to another standard plan with higher discount of 12% with direct debit billing. I'll never do a direct debit, to hard to block/cancel if something goes wrong and retailer is a dick, friends have been caught out before.
So signed up for Alinta. Alinta standard pricing is basically the same as my AGL plan at the moment, but only getting 11% Pay on Time discount. Alinta a TINY bit lower on supply charge. Plus no lock in contract and no early exit fees. So doesn't appear to be anything to lose by changing.

If AGL do try and get me to stay, they will have to give me an even better discount I think. As I approached them to keep me as a customer and they turned me down. They will have to work for it now. Even if I don't get the call from AGL to stay, I'll be happy with the extra 14% discount on usage rate for the next 24 months at least.

  • I changed about 5 months ago from agl to a different company as they offered a bigger discount and $100 on each the elec snd gas bills

Agl rang and offered 25% and i said nah not good enough , they then offered 35% and sent an email

When i got around to checking the email which linked somewhere else the discount was 33% , agl then denied it could possibly have been 35

I told agl to shove it on pronciple for not giving what they said they would

  • +1

Called my provider EnergyAustralia (QLD) for a discount price match and the best they could do was 18%
    Time to switch!

  • +1

Instead of signing up with Alinta I rang agl, asked for their retention team, told them I was leaving for alinta and wanted to offer them the chance to beat it. They told me say no more, they've come out and blown everyone out of the water with their offer and they're prepared to beat out by 1% for a total of 26% pay on time discount, but only for twelve months. I am only an electricity customer, not gas, so didn't benefit from that too.

    Thanks OP!

    • Exactly what I did first time I rang up…but still 25% was max they would go. Guy even went and spoke to his team leader who wouldn't budge.

      • +1

Imo that line is just to have a 5 minute break. They probably never actually speak to their team leader. That's my thoughts anyway

        • +1

Ex call centre employee, can confirm that it's a 'chat to your co-worker' break.

  • +1

Pfff! No luck with AGL… This is my chat reply.. I understand and appreciate your time, the discount is only available for a specific customers for any reason and you should be able to receive the same notification if you are qualified to that deal.

Looks like I'm going to change providers now..

  • So the 26% comes off the 28.60cents Tariff 11 which makes it 21.16 cents Inc GST

    Is this correct?

Does anyone know what their Tariff 31 fees are?

The 26% doesn't come off the daily supply charge of 1.10 inc GST does it

    • Not supply.

  • +1

I switched to click energy through One Big Switch and got 27% off usage and supply charges.

    • QLD or NSW ? Also are their rates 27% higher to start with?..

      • QLD. Rates were slightly higher but still beats the 16% from previous provider. They rang me up to price match but couldn’t

    • +1

Thanks for this post. I was on the One Big Switch 18% plan, called them now and got it changed to the 27% deal.

      • Their Tariff 31 is 27cents Inc GST. Thats heaps more then others

  • Comment by downtime is not true in Victoria.
    My rate is
    Daily supply charge 0.9474
    Usage 0.1726 step 2
    0.1834 step 1
    Feed in 0.113

  • Good to get a savings on electricity where you can but it just goes to show that 26% off is a complete fiction - they just make up whatever prices they want then offer you a discount from that. There's no 'RRP' in this industry.

  • I switched to Alinta in QLD recently and Powershop weren’t interested in matching their offer. Powershop creates a stupid system anyway where they waste your time to save the most by having to prepurchase electricity packs online. Dumbest idea ever - time is money.

  • +1

    great find!
I tried to access this offer through the online chat, they could only offer max 12% discount
Then I rang them, got the same line of 12% max discount
I said I wanted 25% then they transferred me through to someone else now I have 25%

    • Just ask for retention team at the start next time :P

  • Do the discounts apply to the solar FIT as well?

    • No.

  • If anyone signs up for this deal, give me the Energy Price Fact sheet that they have to provide you and I'll add the plan to the Qld & NSW Electricity Price Comparison spreadsheet… or just you this spreadsheet to compare what you're being offered. More info here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/327799

  • I'm with AGL in Qld and I asked them to match Alinta's 25%, they offered me 12% and a one off credit of $25.I already get 14% discount from them{AGL} so they just offered me less to stay with them?

  • I can confirm the same 26% discount in QLD. Changing to Simply Energy, they called and offered me the discount on electricity.

    • What are their rates though?

  • Anything for SA? My last bill is so high…

    • +2

Alinta 25% or Powerdirect 18% (with lower rates) seem good for SA atm

    • Alinta's SA pricing is here https://www.alintaenergy.com.au/sapricing

Compared to AGL, Alinta's supply charge is higher and retailer FIT is less than half.

AGL has 3 discounted plans: 9%, 12%, 14%. I did my sums based on my last bill.
If I excluded my solar export, Alinta is slightly ahead. (note: I can't tell what my total usage is)
If I included solar export, AGL is ahead by $40/qtr at least.

So if I managed to get AGL to give 25% discount, AGL is ahead $84.

      • +1

If you get 25% off AGL in SA let us know

        • Exactly. The max I received was 15% off. If you get higher please let me know.

  • And this is why electricity prices are so high at the moment. All the companies offer similar offers to this, and will match the competitor offers. They price electricity high knowing that they can then reduce by 26% and still make a huge profit. I had the same type of price "war" between AGL and Origin when changing my electricity plan a while ago (also gas, but they don't seem to go to the huge discounts with gas). Ended up with Origin, 21% off electricity and 14% off gas. That was nearly a year ago so looks like the discounts are getting higher (at about the same rate the prices are increasing). I'm in Qld.
Just be careful to check the actual prices.. some charge higher supply charges and others charge higher usage charges - so it really depends on your usage as to which is better (that is especially the case between Origin and AGL).

  • Please excuse my ignorance but I'm just not quite getting it. If you sign up with another energy provider, you get 10 days cooling period. Do you have to pay any penalty to terminate the new contract if your current provider offers you a better deal? What are the normal procedure in changing providers? Can someone kindly providing more information please. Thanks.

  • Energy Australia gave me 32% off to 'come back' after signing with Alinta, who were going to give me 30% :)

    • +1

is this QLD though? Energy Australia could only offer me 17% max in QLD

    • Qld is a different situation though.

  • Tried to sign up this morning and could only get 10%
Mentioned my mates got 26% but they wouldn't do it for me. spent 40min on chat too

    • That sucks .. some people have had luck doing this, other's haven't. Did you speak to their customer resolution team?

      • +1

Spoke to the live chat for ages arguing about this and then they promoted me to his supervisor who couldn't help much and said they will give me a phone call within 24 hours to discuss it. Told them I wanted 26% like others or I will not sign up

        • +1

The 24/7 Guys aren't trained to deviate from the script - ask to speak to the customer resolution team when they call you.

        • @chrislheilig:
          Ok will try

        • @chrislheilig: Thanks mate. It works for me (QLD electricity only). Before that, I did try chat, call 13 number and email as well. Best they can offer is 12% and one off $25. Tried last time on 13 number and ask them to transfer to resolution team as I'm unhappy and leaving them. I tried negotiating by quoting Click Energy 27% discount(One big switch). Lady over the phone said can't do 27%. How about 25%? I said what about 26% and she said 25% is the last one. She won :)

        • @benstella:
Do you have to be a AGL customer for it to work?

        • @Twisty: Customer Resolution team is for resolving existing customer complaints. If you want to join AGL may be talk to their marketing team :)

        • @benstella:

Has anyone joined AGL and got this 26%?

        • @Twisty:
          I'd like to know too

    • Phone, reading here no one gets a deal with chat, you need to phone and talk to retention.

  • +2

Origin (in QLD), have just contacted me to try and keep me as a customer - details below -
    Your Energy Plan benefits
Guaranteed discount 21.00% on usage Charges and supply charges.
Energy Plan name Bill Saver Plus electricity - 12 months

Peak Usage cents per kWh 24.5100 26.9610
    T33-Controlled Supply(Economy) cents per kWh 20.4800 22.5280
Supply Charge cents per day 114.1900 125.6090
    Supply Charge - T33 cents per day 2.7600 3.0360
If you have a Solar PV system installed at your premises a solar meter charge of 6.43 cents per day (excl. GST) or 7.073 cents per day
(incl. GST) applies. This charge is passed through from your distributor and may vary.

If you have a Solar PV system at your Supply Address exporting electricity to the grid, we offer a retailer feed-in tariff of 7c/kWh (incl GST if
    any).
If you're eligible for a feed-in tariff under the QLD Government's Solar Bonus Scheme you'll also receive the 44c/kWh feed-in tariff. You
must ensure your continued eligibility to keep receiving this tariff - visit originenergy.com.au/solarfit for details.
Feed-in tariffs are subject to change by notice - we'll let you know if they do.

    • TT, where you able to get the $2.70 supply charge reduced?

      • It's 2.76 cents per day for t33 not $2.76

    • Just had a call from Origin QLD offering the same deal (21% off useage/daily charge and 7c/kWh feed in ) and will post date back to my last bill date, which is over two months in my case. I am still doing the maths but think I might stay for a month or so for a new discounted bill and then go to Alinta.

  • just spoke to the agl customer support at the retention team and she offered 26% off electricity and 8% off gas starting today, both direct debit in QLD. I did mention the alinta offer. She said she was unaware of this as she is based in Victoria. (squeaky wheel gets the oil)

    • I was offered 14% by AGL but went with Origin as 14% of $4.18/Mj vs. 8% of Origin's rates (which are already 25% cheaper) just didn't complete.

Seen as the AGL Gas and Electricity Bills aren't combined anyway, there is really no benefit in having the same provider.

      My Rates with Origin:
Plan name: Origin Maximiser natural gas
      Duration: 12 months
8% Guaranteed Discount (Without Direct Debit)
6% Guaranteed Discount (Without Direct Debit)
Usage first 1701.16160 MJ per day cents per MJ 2.7960 ex GST 3.0756 inc GST
Usage next 8305.68770 MJ per day cents per MJ 2.4200 ex GST 2.6620 inc GST
Remaining Usage cents per MJ 2.1580 ex GST 2.3738 inc GST
Supply Charge cents per day 105.9400 ex GST 116.5340 inc GST

  • Click Energy is 27% discount but their energy fees are a lot higher then all, Tariff 31 Inc GST is like 27cents before discount. Am I reading this correct???

    • +1

If you're talking about One Big Switch then be careful. click energy charge extra to big switch members.
      https://www.clickenergy.com.au/energy-price-fact-sheets/ener…
The usage charges for Big Switch Up are 8.90% above the Click Energy Standing offer and the daily supply charge is 8.90% above the Click Energy Standing offer for this distribution area.

  • anyone looked at Powershop? I am in qld. they offer rates 15% off usage and supply.
