Just called them and asked if they ever met Tightarse and they hung up on me. ☹

    • crossing the line? … username checks out! lolz

    TA some deals on X1 Carbon pleasee! :}

  • +2

Great specs for the price, wish it was a little lighter and prettier! Still hoping for a super deal on a 14" Asus Zenbook.

  • Currently posting from one of these that I got one of the other times they were on OzBargain. Only difference is mine has 2x 8GB RAM. Great unit and no joke this has the BEST keyboard I've ever used.

    • +1

I was waiting on a typo in your comment :p

    • it cant be its not backlit

      • I try not to look at screens in a dark room. Bad for your eyes so not an issue for me.

        • But good to have as an option can always turn it off but if it doesn't have it you can't turn it on.

  • +1

Thanks TA! Really appreciate it :)

I just recently bought one for about $85 more (using different deals) as I was desperate and needed something right away, but it did come with 16GB ram - this is probably the best bang for your buck laptop out there, I couldn't find anything close in specs and size to fit the budget !!

    • How did it come with 16GB RAM when you ordered for 8GB?

      • I didnt order this deal through lenovo. Went through ebay and the model available was the 16gb version.

  • +3

E480/E580 should be out in 8 weeks

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274465

    Hopefully has USB-C ports

    • +2

      Hope it has backlit keyboard

  • +3
    • +5

Correct. Was. Unfortunately haven't been able to get 16GB anywhere near that price since. Not for lack of trying though.

      • +3

No probs, just thought people would want a reference point
Total price is $940 with 8+8

      • +1

Heads up, saw the same one at JB Hi-fi on special for ~$1,700.

Just a reference point, this is a fantastic deal, thank TA.

  • Any chance of a 15" model without discrete graphics getting such a sale?

  • i bought lenovo and it crapped out in 2 months. they do not have service center in Perth. Buyers beware. They have been waiting on parts and its bloody slow. they may have to send the laptop overseas!

    • Been happy with my e460 so far. Although like my 360m - I guess this graphics card is pretty useless.

    • Did you buy yours with 3 year NBD warranty? I've had units repaired (motherboard on One, screen on another) within 24-48 hours without issues in Perth.

Anyone thinking of buying one, I'd recommend paying extra for the NBD on-site support coverage where prompt repair is required (only system, etc.).

      • Bought the i7 7700hq laptop for 1400$. I did not purchase additional warranty and thought they would have service center in perth :(.

  • Is the ram extendable

    • +1

      Yes, 8+8 adds $105
      Total $940

      • Thx

        • Whereabouts do you find the option to increase the ram on the Lenovo site? Can't seem to find it. Just want to know for the next deal.

  • +8

TA can you please negotiate a deal for X1 Carbon!

    • +1, TA!

    • +2, TA !

    • +3

    • TA would love to be able to get a deal on the X1 Carbon for the Ozbargain community.
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2606517
Has reference to an Ozbaragin deal that worked for me, took some trying to checkout but it eventually worked.
Got a barebones X1 for $1111 after Amex deal and cashrewards (still waiting for cashrewards - used valid code DEALS so should get it).

  • Got one a few weeks ago. Nice machine, great keyboard. The only downside for me is the screen isn't as bright as other laptops. I don't think it's due to the matte finish, it's just the backlight that's not very bright.

  • How does this compare to the t470?

    • +2

The E470 is slightly heavier, made out of subjectively cheaper material, has worse speakers, a slower SSD, a dimmer screen and moderately worse browsing and video battery life. Keyboards are basically the same except the T470 has key backlighting and the E470 doesn't
It has much better game performance and slightly better battery life at full load than the T470 though
Source: (i5 versions so expect battery life on the i7 to be slightly worse)

We have several of these at work. They look very nice and compact. I think 14" is the perfect balance between carrying a heavy 15.6" brick around and eye strain from a 12.5/13.3" screen that's too small. Specs on this are perfect.

  • worth waiting for 16gb ram? or how significant is the difference between 8gb or 16gb ram?

  • +1

Is this any good for occasional gaming? PUBG? No expecting max setting but at least playable on medium settings

  • Is this okay to edit GoPro footage with ??

    • Yes

    • Yes, but the 7500u processor isn't really suited to heavy workloads.

I suggest the system is configured with 2 stick of RAM so that you're running in dual-channel config, as you're going to want any additional performance boost you can get when running a 15W low-power mobile CPU.

      • I'm currently leaning more towards the Dell 15 7000 still looking.. bit more expensive then this deal tho

  • 835 for 1 year warranty or 3 years?

    • 1 year.

      • Just ordered one.

        • It's a decent model. Bought a couple for family members during their last sale and happy with the performance / quality given the price.

  • OK for the price, but IMHO, you'd be better off to pay maybe $100-$150 extra for something about 300 grams lighter, maybe 13.3 inch screen, with the newer MX150 graphics instead of 940MX. I'm waiting for the new model Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13.3in with MX150 to drop under $1K.

No backlit keyboard and "a contender for best student laptop under $1000"? Fanciful.

    • -1

What's it like always being so negative?

      • +1

It's wonderful. Thanks for the neg, Mr Positive.

Great deal, waiting for a deal on X1 carbon to use a AMEX cash back.

  • I bought it a few months ago and I'm pretty happy with it. However, has anyone else the problem that the fan always spins for just a few seconds (every few minutes or even when just loading a new website)?

    • The fan is activated when the CPU temp reaches a specified threshold to cool as required. Manufacturers at times fine-tune the parameters as required as part of BIOS updates.

Check to ensure you're running the latest BIOS, and update to the latest if required but the fan on/off behavior is normal.

      • Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I've already updated the Bios - didn't help.

I just thought the fan would then at least be active for a (few) minute(s) and not just 5 seconds.

        • The low voltage processor used in this system doesn't take much to cool. Loading graphics intensive sites can also trigger the fan if, say the temps were hovering around the fan trigger threshold when you started browsing.

You can probably force the fan to run all the time if the on/off is bothersome by modifying the active cooling setting so that it's always running, under advanced power management options in windows, but it may adversely effect the longevity of the unit. Best to leave the system as-is.

      • couldn't you use program to control the fan speed? i understand you can't tell the fans NOT to spin up if they need to, but you could probably set the fans to spin at a similar level all the time instead of constantly going from zero to 50% and back again, which is highly irritating.

        • It's been a while since I looked at using an application to control system fan speed (2010 iMac HDD to SSD upgrade with SSD having no temp sensing probe throwing out system fan control comes to mind), but the temp/fan trigger parameters are programmed in to the BIOS, the settings for which are always hidden from user view.

3rd party apps that attempt to control such functionalities need to hook in to system management components on the device. Different manufacturers use differing parts in their build, there's no guarantee the software has been tested with the model in question giving proper control.

For this reason I wouldn't recommend their use generally. It's one thing to modify the active cooling parameters in Windows (1 setting), but another to suggest the use of the fan/system control apps to users (numerous settings that if they work at all can be mis-configured by a novice to potentially damage the unit).

    • Yes, this is the only thing that annoys me about this machine. I wonder why there are not more people complaining about the fan noise and how often it spins up.

      • I guess people who care more about the 'minor' non-usability issues of laptops would be more likely to buy a Dell XPS or Macbook, Surface etc. The design of the Lenovo is kind of like Crocs haha. Practical and great bang-for-buck, but a bit rough around the edges.

        • I still remember my old E430 and a similar issue with the fan caused quite a turmoil on the Lenovo forums. Lenovo then promised to fix it through software but never really delivered. The E470 is quite large and should have enough room inside for a better cooling system.

Would be great to hear if anyone has any tips to minimise this fan disturbance.

  • I don't know why, but the code isn't working for me.

    • +1

      Please see updated OP…

Lenovo has advised coupon has been removed temporarily but will be re-activated at 3PM. This is due to a system glitch.

      • +1

        thanks tightarse! I hadn't refreshed

        • Is it due to 3% extra discount till 3pm on all E series ?

      • also trying to order this for a colleague and its not working. will wait until then.

    • +1

For me the code is cancelling out the DEALS code.

DEALS code takes the price from $1499 to $999

TA-E470-835 code cancels that and discounts $45 off, to make $1454 total.

      • +1

The live chat team seem happy to help.

        • +1

Please be careful if ordering through chat team as you won't qualify for cashback.

        • @tightarse: I've never used Cash Rewards. Does it change anything when you're doing your tax return?

  • Thoughts regarding the extended warranty? Is it worth purchasing the 3 year on site one? Thank you!

    • If you need timely repairs (within a day or two) then yes. If you're willing to wait a few days / weeks to have laptop repaired, and don't mind shipping the unit back/forth (or dropping off / picking up) from a repair center, then perhaps no.

      • Thank you :)

    • I opted for 2 year NBD warranty. Figured it was a good balance between default 1 vs 3 upgrade cost

  • Thanks TightArse.
    Bought one :)

  • Can this laptop support a second display via HMDI as well as own screen?

    • +1

      Yes.

  • Thanks TA, was looking for a laptop for someone, this was a suitable device.

Have the previous one (e460). really really really shitty trackpad. does not work in humid conditions or with oily hands. poor battery life (2.5 hours). good keyboard but i have had a few random events where certain keys stopped working.
would work ok as a stationary student computer but would spend a little more money if otherwise possible.
Do not buy if you are planning to travel. it will frustrate you.

biggest problem is the inertial scrolling which will randomly engage and zoom in/out if you happen to press CTRL.
    can't turn it off either.

    • I hate trackpads, so I use a little tiny wireless mouse :)

  • Unfortunately it looks like this may have ended as link appears to be dead. Live chat couldn't help either. Next time I guess!

    • Yes I checked link about 7am and it had stopped working. So had expired. Wonder how many they sold to ozbargain folks? :)

  • all other laptops also increased in price ?
    X1 is now expensive than 2 days ago… :-(

  • My order has shipped.
