So are these Kogan TVs at least half decent then? I've been told to avoid but honestly I can't imagine what the picture quality difference would be from say, an actual Samsung TV. If it's a bit uglier, that's fine. If the software sucks, that's fine, I have a Mi Box.

    • +1

Based on your comments, it would be safe to say, you will like it. Unless you are very particular, you would be fine with such tellies

    • +6

Panel is only half the equation. It also needs proper circuit driving it - which can be where these fail. Poor up-scaling, post-processing, washed out colours, etc.

    • +9

      It's a $789 65" 4K TV.

Samsung screen or not, its built to a price.
If you accept the price and knowing its not actually a Samsung TV, buy it.

I have a Soniq 55" I just recently bought. Love it, no regrets. I paid $600 delivered. But comparing it to a TV 3 or 4 times (or more!) the price is unfair.

If you want a cheap large screen TV, go for OP's one. Great price. It'll suit your needs perfectly fine.
If you wanted a OLED latest generation TV, you wouldn't even be looking at this one. Price is the main factor, so go buy it on price.

      • I bought that SONIQ too and I'm loving it. Recently watched a Game of Thrones and it looked insane - don't even know if that was 4K or not!

Would it be wise to wait for the aldi Bauhn 65″ UHD TV coming out on the 16th? $849

    • It's actually $797

    • +1

Not sure on which TV is better but for warranty purposes I'd say Aldi would be easier to deal with.

Fair enough, would be a pain delivering to the CBD.

      • +1

Only available for delivery in Melbourne & Sydney metro areas.

        • Why on earth is it only for melb/syd metro areas?
Are kogan considering opening traditional stores in vic/nsw maybe?

  • +3

wait till it gets free shipping. Shipping is around $100, makes it around $900 (these TVs are a complete PITA to move around even if they're light), so average price. I've been keeping my eye on it This TV has been going up and down the $800 mark for quite a few months now. so nothing special.

I just got back from the states and kept my eye on their cheaper 65" TVs at around this price-point and saw HDR in their specs, so i think HDR on the cheaper panels is just around the corner. May be worth holding out a little longer.

If you do get warranty, make sure its onsite, you dont wanna be taking this thing to a service center, could be costly.

    • Yeah I got a 55 Hisense M7000 with HDR and WCG. Nice tradeoff between price and quality

  • I got one of these. The backlight bleed is pretty bad. The blacks are patchy but it's pretty good for a cheap 4k tv

    • That back-light bleed can make or break a TV in my eyes. I've returned a few LCD panels over the years due to this issue.

  • Only available for delivery in Melbourne & Sydney metro areas.

  • Anyone wanna swap for my 65'' Samsung plasma monster?

    • power usage aside, I got a Soniq plasma and I think it has a samsung panel. I like it a lot even though the remote control died. It's always hooked up to a kodi box anyway.

  • But it's not curved!

    • +3

Curved sucks! It makes me want to rip my eyes out! Guaranteed glare from any angle!

      • Yeh, not really sure why curved TV's are a thing. Monitors and gaming are perfect for it, but not large screens in the middle of your lounge room…

        • I can't stand curved monitors either. It isn't like it's wrapping around you anyway. It still only occupies your central field of view. If I want things on the side, I'll use more monitors (e.g. Flight sim or race car sim).

        • I agree with all these comments… I can't stand curved!
It's why they are making less of them- just a gimmic that didn't catch on.
Completely impractical for most locations TV's are installed around the home.

      does it have band28?

  • I'll stick with my FullHD Sony for now.

  • Does anyone know the difference between the KU8000 and 9000 series from Kogan?

    • 1000 ;-)

      • oh thanks

        • +2

          Couldn't resist :P

    • +2

Very little, since we talking about Samsung panels being run by Kogan circuitry.

      https://comparetv.net/samsung-un55ks9000-vs-un55ks8000-diffe…

The difference in actual Samsung TV's though (according to above site), is:

      • Improved dimming and refresh rate technology
      • Slightly better speakers

Remembering that the above is in actual Samsung TV's, and its a safe bet that Kogan isn't changing the internal circuitry for such minor changes.

I reckon if you put the two next to each other you wouldn't be able to tell which is which.

      • Thats fantastic, most of the time people complain about lag with channel changes and other things that they contribute to the Kogan specific brand. This gives me some reassurance

        • Hmmm… it's not supposed to reassure mate :).

They are more laggy! All the cheaper brands are. My Soniq is the same. I love it, but there's definitely a tad more response time when changing channels and the like.

But like I said above… it's about the price. I can take performance hits and lesser features if it means a huge saving.
For a home theater setup I'd be far more particular and budget would have to increase.

        • +1

Depends how much you care about backlight bleeding, blooming, brightness, contrast, the wider colour gammat and overall picture quality. If you're not too concerned with those things you probably won't mind the Kogan TV. Keep in mind that if you don't have much 4K content all the Movies and shows will look worse on this TV as it is awful at upscaling. To be fair you'll need to spend over $1500 for a TV to solve all these issues anyway…. Just don't try and compare it to a big name model as it's not even close

      • +1

The Samsung ks8000 is not anything like the Kogan ku8000. They've tricked people into thinking that it's basically the same thing as they put - Has a Samsung panel and a almost identical model number. Specs from Kogan read like a 2004 Lcd tv whilst the Samsung ks8000 is a top of the line 4k panel with all the greatest features. Only down sight is its edgelit. Don't fall for the marketing gimmick!

  • +3

I keep reading on Kogans ads that they have Samsung panels. But on the TV's spec sheet it says 1200:1 contrast ratio and under 300 nits of brightness. Samsung only have VA panels which have at least 3000:1 contrast and 800 nits brightness. Sounds like the TV's are actually IPS panels possibly from LG as they have lower specs for these ratings. They give a better viewing angle but have a poor picture quality

Haha, I know not entirely relevant, but I was someone on a BSS site trying to sell a 16 month old TCL 60" television for $900. Some people think their items are pure gold.
