Help Need a Suit, School Formal Friday Emergency

Update 2:

Skipped the shoes, as appon inspectin them the quality was low, I'll pull it off with a pair of dark brown shoes.
Bought silver cufflinks and tie pin.

I'm all ready :D, thanks fellow Ozbargainer's :P

Update:

Hey everyone I got a great wool charcoal suit, shirt and a tie all for $259! It's a really beautiful suit for a bargain much less than I though I'd have to pay for a wool suit :D.

Got it at Oxford Harbour Town, it's where they clear out stock at reduced price, so actual price is cheaper than there other stores and website.

Jacket

Shirt

Trousers

Tie

I'd just like to thank you all for all the help in finding a suit on such short notice, you've all been incredibly helpful and awesome :D.

Now I just need to get some cufflinks, tie pin and cologne :).

Will gold cufflinks and tie pin go with my suit or is silver better suited?

Was thinking of the ones from Tarocash.

Rose gold tie pin

Rose gold cufflinks

Silver tie pin

Silver cufflinks

I find the tie pins and cufflinks to be too contemporary, modern for my taste though.
Does anybody have recommendations for tie pins and cufflinks?

I was thinking about these shoes cheapest good pair I could find, or these Rivers shoes are even cheaper but I find rivers shoes sole's collapse in on the inside of the shoe

Shoe 1

Shoe 2

Shoe 3

Does anyone have recommendations on shoes at about $50, and cologne.

Hey all, I have a school formal this Friday and I need a suit and shoe's ASAP, I have absolutely no idea where to get a suit and shoe's at a good price, or hire, and what kind of suit I need?

Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks fellow Ozbargainer's :)

Budget to buy is about up to $300 for the suit but preferably less as I'm a student :)

Edit:
How about these ones for hire from
Peter shearer Hire 1st choice $89
Peter shearer Hire 2nd choice $59

For purchase.

I really like this one.
Tarocash Ledger 2 Button Suit

Hallensteins Black Stretch Suit $199
Hallensteins Capulet Tux
$199

Hallensteins Black Classic Stretch Suit
$199

Is Peter shearer good quality yup buy, or are they just cheap over priced stuff?

Edit: 2
Black is more my color as it goes good with my black hear, I'm more of a stylish smart dresser but don't like those ultra tight diamond? Suits.

Edit: 3
Do I need a vest?

if you are really on a tight budget, try big W, Target or KMart specially if it will be a one off thing. or if you really like quality, a lot of places do formal hire.
    Google is your friend buddy.

    • +1

Thanks for the quick reply :) Yeah if I have to buy I prefer quality as I'll be using it more than once.

      • +13

As long as the vomit washes out.

        • +1

          Hehe, I'm a germaphobe :P no really

      • +2

target is the pick from the above listed.

I would actually suggest Connor in your case. Sure it's not wool but the fit there tends to be fashionable. maybe about $100? edit looks not to be on sale.

        • +1
        • @dasher86: is it possible to get a complete suit at Myer for under $300

        • +2

target suit aren't too bad, $99 mix and match. So you can buy size 40 jacket and size 30 pants.
Conner had buy $199 suit and get a free pair of shoe (RRP $79)on the weekend. Their shirt are bit pricy.
Even better if you have a factory outlet near you then you can have more choice.

        • +1

          @Wystri Warrick:
Yes, go to a big shopping centre and try Myer then visit the other places. You'll get something.
It doesn't have to be black though. It's called a formal but it's not that strict.
My sons formal was last year, he had black and looked great ( was a summer wool suit, not super cheap) but others had blues and great that also looked great.
Are you going with someone, what is she wearing.
Don't for get a shirt tie and pocket square to set it off.
Myer and David jones are good. But I've seen Target, they look fine..

Taro has https://www.tarocash.com.au/au/midnight-harvey-stretch-1-but… it looks nice.

Start now as you need time to try things one.

A rental place may be too late.

    Gumtree

    • Thanks for the quick reply, never thought of that I'll have a look :)

      • +1

I have a formal suit advertised on gumtree that one of my sons wore for his school formal. I am in Sydney. Search for slim fit suit by Hugo Boss.

        • -3

          Richy rich. Lol

A Hugo Boss suit for a school formal! Lucky son.

        • @JB1:
Some are really cheap, seen them new in stores for $399 so not all expensive.

  • +5

    Op Shop

    • +1

Thanks for the quick reply :). I've been to op shops around me before didn't see any suits.

      • +1

Check Rivers as well, they do suits too.

        • +1

Oh yeah thanks I'll check now :)

      • +1

Go to OP shops in classy suburbs.

        • +1

I checked op shops in around the CBD?

        • The homeless will have beaten you to the good stuff.

  • +5

Borrow from a friend/relative? Lot's of people hitting this issue don't all have the function on the same night, so you might have a friend at another school who has bought their suit but isn't using it that night.
I'm not a fan of buying a suit for a formal in the hope it will get multiple wears. I think I ended up doing three formals over a couple of years, then didn't wear a suit again for 4 years (admittedly, I then wore one 4 days a week for 7 years, but certainly not the same style as for a formal!). And some events require a tuxedo, others a lounge suit, and your partners will have their own opinions on how you should dress. If you buy a suit you only have one option.

    • +1

My friends are in the same boat as me.
Tuxedo, lounge suit? I better just check with school what suit.

  • +2

Do you know your measurements? You could possibly get something from ASOS - they have fantastic suits, and do express delivery - check the date they give you. ASOS is especially great if you are of a slender build. You can definitely get yourself a suit for under $300. Do you need help with styling, or just actually finding a suit for under $300?

    • +1

Wow thanks I'll check it out.
Um I take a shirt size 39-40 and jeans are 30-32 slim fit? I suppose this information is useless?
Yeah I need help with styling.

      • +2

Try ASOS. I am a very skinny chap and Super Skinny is too tight for me for pants - so if you're not slender, aim for slim fit. If you're slender, you could probably pull off Skinny fit. Have you got a white colalred shirt? Make sure you take into account the shirt you're wearing underneath. Shoes need to match your belt; so they'd better be black. Have you got a tie as well? With a black suit, sometimes you can pull off a red tie. If you are gonna go a red tie, make sure to heck it's a skinny tie. Guys commonly just wear any old red tie and it does, swear to god, look tacky. But a skinny red one looks ace.

        • +1

Is everything at ASOS all sold separately, or do they also sell complete suits?

        • +1

@Wystri Warrick: Some are, some aren't. If you choose a pair of pants, for example, it will show you the matching jacket. They're not really sold as a whole 'suit' cos a lot of people have different sizing (Medium pants but smaller jacket, say)

        • +1

          @ThithLord: ah, thanks ThithLord :)

  • +2

Connors might be the way to go - they're selling most of last seasons suits. We ended up getting our groomsmen suits there at $150 (suit, shirt, tie and pants),

    • +1

Bearing in mind, every teen and his dog will be wearing stuff from Connors, though. Lol.

  • Go to like yd or tarocash.

You are young. Prople wont know the difference.

You should be able to be suited up for $300z

  • +2

Birkenhead point or DFO outlets. Totally depends on luck, but a win if in your favour.

    • +4

      Worked for Marge Simpson

  • +1

Grrr this is getting stressful! So many options how to find what I like at the best price :(

    • +1

      set yourself a budget.
Don't set it too high, contrary to what you think you will probably only wear this suit a handful of times before styles change, your body changes and you just need a different suit for different occasions.
At all possible times best way to get a good looking suit is to try it on. yes it is cheaper to buy online but if you want a good looking suit it is all about fit.
Given your small time frame free returns will not work.
Ask a girlfriend or a slightly older male to take you out to try some on.

When in doubt black suit trousers (slim), a white dress shirt and a black tie (skinny / slim is in), you may just be cold for the evening.

      • +1

        Thanks dasher86 :).
Yeah about $300 is my budget I could go higher but I'm a frugal a Ozbargainer.
Yeah I think I'll definitely buy one in store so I can try it on, don't want to risk it.
        Thanks for the tips :).

Lowes have a $220 special for a full suit, shirt, tie, and shoes.

    • +1

Thanks GhostZero, I'll check it out :)

  • +2

    Vinneys, yeah

  • +1

If you're in Melbourne, try a place called Dimmeys (there's a few around, even one on Philip Island) for something cheap but good quality. I got a whole suit (shirt, jacket, pants), formal shoes and a tie from there for about $60 normal price.

    • +1

Ooh thanks TransportPosters, I'll have to check it :)

  • ED harry's… full suit… grey/black/navey… 99bucks… bigW for the shoes you will wear once or twice… 20-30 bucks. van hueson is good too… i picked up a 400 dollar suit a few years ago for just over 100 bucks… these are made for 'nervous nights' so i'd probably go brand new… unless you'd find pre-farted-in pants more comfortable and stylish.

  • +1

If you are young I wouldn't go big on buying a suit with plans on future wear, good chance it won't fit in a couple of years. You can get away with a cheap suit by wearing a stunning eye catching tie and expensive smelling after shave. Good luck and have fun.

    • +1

Thanks for the help Birchy :)

Maybe take a look at Bossini Menswear:
    https://www.bossinimenswear.com.au/collections/sale

Sometimes they have some good priced package deals if you are a standard size!
I'm not sure where they're located in relation to you though

  • +5

find your local DFO and go straight into OXFORD. Quality mens suits (i mean proper wool quality) you can get a $800 suit there for less than $250 any day of the week.

If you're in melbourne, the one near crown is best

    • +3

Good tip, agree with this guy OXFORD alwaysssssssss have sales on not even sure how they make money some of there stuff is REALLY good for the price.

    • +1

Yep, i buy my business suits from oxford. Reasonable quality, decent colours, and they last 6 months with 2 days a week wearage! I've never paid more than about $300 for an oxford suit either.

      • +2

What is wearing out within 6 months @ 2 days a week wearage?

I used to wear the thighs out really quickly, but getting silk saddles put in by a tailor (~$25/pair) makes them last much much longer.

        • Yeah that would probably help my pants last longer, thats the main concern

  • +1

Who are you taking to your formal ?

  • +1

    I recommend Peter Shearer.

  • +2

What career are you planning? Are you likely to need to wear a suit in your working life or not?

If you are, then I would consider buying a decent suit and think of it as an investment.

Whilst black is ok for formals, in terms of business/work wear, black is a colour that has been considered "out of fashion" for some years now. So if you plan to wear it for work attire, a good alternative is a nice deep blue/navy colour? You will still look good for evening wear, but it also very usable for work/business.

In terms of brands, none of the ones you have mentioned are known for their good suits. They are more casual-wear clothing brands that make the occasional suit. If you can afford it or find a good special, MJ Bale make some nice suits. For something cheaper, maybe Oxford?

The first thing to look for when trying out suits is fit in the shoulders as that is often the area that is most difficult to adjust. Where the sleeve is attached to the shoulder should be nicely. Actually, check out this link as it explains it a lot better than I can!

    https://blacklapel.com/thecompass/how-should-a-suit-fit/

I have no affiliation to the above, it is simply the first link I found when I googled "suit fit".

Don't be too easily convinced by dodgy suit sales people either. I've listened in to some shockers in my time when I have been shopping. The first suit buyer is particularly vulnerable (which is why I suggested looking at the above link) and I've heard some real garbage being spun by bad salespeople.

If you have any questions, I am more than happy to help in any way.

Good luck and enjoy! To me, this should be one of your first "serious" purchases as an adult so enjoy the experience. It is a rite of passage of growing up!

    • +1

Thanks for the detailed post :)

I'm planning on going in to social work preferably youth, or finance.

Yeah I think your right about black, a navy blue seems nice, I'm leaning towards charcoal and dark gray now with a red tie.

Yeah your right, I went to Oxford today and the suits where much higher quality.

Thanks for the link, it was really helpful.

Haha, I'm always suspicious of sales people, was at Conners today the sleeves where almost down to my knuckles, sales person told me it's a perfect fit!

I've been looking at suits at Oxford as some Ozbargainer's have recommended them, I narrowed it down to 2 jackets, 1 trousers and a vest but what you said makes really good sense.
I'm having trouble understating all the different types of suits and telling them apart, you seem quite knowledgeable about suits if it wouldn't be to much trouble would you be able to recommend me a suit from Oxford, I'd be very grateful?

I'm 6ft and haven't grown in a while, so I see a good suit as a good investment, I'd only need to wear it a few times for it to pay off compared to hiring, and I have a few thousand saved up, I just never spend any money!

Weird question, are wool suits easier to be stretched compared to polyester suits?

      • +1

The first thing I would do is to look for a particular colour or pattern I want. In this case, perhaps a deep navy blue for you, although if you find other colours/patterns you like, then go right ahead! For a first suit, I would recommend something plain with no pattern (no stripes, checks etc.). Colour = deep navy or other darker shades of blue). 2 button (don't get 3 button as it went out about 10 years ago).

In your list of oxford suits, something like http://www.oxfordshop.com.au/m/product.aspx?id=10461&CatId=3… is about as light a colours as I would get for my first suit.

Then, it is all about the fit, which means you have to try in store. The trouble is that good fit is something that is hard to recognise at first, I had to learn it over many years of suit shopping. My eyes would see something I liked but I wouldn't always understand what it was that I liked about it, which is why that link I sent in my first post is useful. It helps define the specific things to look for.

Given how tall you are, it is important to ensure you have the right proportions in your suit. Unfortunately, I don't have rules here to go by, as everything I know is specific for what works for me, so I don't want to give you bad advice. But perhaps if I mention the things I look for you can see if it applies for you or not (depends very much on your body shape). I can tell you that my shoulders are quite broad and that my waist is relatively slim so I need a very slim fit jacket that doesn't make me look like a walking fridge. That has been the biggest challenge for me when suit shopping. Button the jacket up (top button only), check the fit on your shoulders. The jacket should sit comfortably but not be so tight that you get a super "X" crease where the button is barely holding the jacket in place!

My legs are also longer than my body, so I like the top button of my (2 button) suit to be quite low, as a longer "V" look accentuates the body length more so than a high button "v". Then (because I'm fussy) I usually get my waist, pants, and sleeves altered to make them tighter to give that overall slimming effect. Nowadays for the pants, I usually go for no "break" (where your pants meets your feet/shoes) as that is the trend to have a tighter cleaner look. Google "pants break" to see what I mean.

Which leads me to the point that with fit, some things can be altered by a good tailor, however other things are much harder.

For instance, sleeve length can be altered, however, if the suit has buttons on the sleeve, they might need to be moved up. Waist can be suppressed (tightened) a bit, however if the suit starts out as being to baggy, if you tighten the waist too much, you get this effect where it looks like a girls jacket (learnt the hard way). Shoulders are not easy to alter (but can be done…not cheaply), and I've never tried to alter the neck area.

Lastly, Hugo Boss make some very nice suits. I have got them as low as $500 when they are on sale, but someone mentioned $300 below. Just bear in mind that many of those factory outlet Hugo Boss suits will be old stock that they are trying to get rid of. This means that there may be a lot of suits that are designed for older men and body shapes as opposed to a young dude like yourself. So be careful you don't get a baggy, saggy, ill fitting suit. I would definitely check it out however as Boss has some fantastic cuts that really "suit" my body shape. IF you do go there, look for red label "HUGO" as that is a brand that targets the younger styling generation. But I have several of the more traditional Black label Boss suits and they generally look great.

Don't spend more than $500 on your first suit as you will learn more and more as you buy more and may change styles as you go along.

        Good luck buddy!

  • +1

If you're in Melbourne there is a Hugo Boss outlet where you can often get a suit for $300 if you want one for work that will last. Are you pale or tanned? Black suits wash out pale skin a bit so if you are I'd go with a charcoal.

Out of what you posted, I like the 2nd Peter Shearer, the Tarocash, and the first Hallensteins (black stretch suit).

You don't need a vest or a bow tie. Also ask your mates what they're doing, or take a female friend or older male with you if you can. Suggest getting it done ASAP in case you need an alteration.

    • +1

      Thanks for the reply :)

I live in Adelaide, there's a Boss store near me, Yay.

I think I'll get a good quality suit, thought of its not possible to get it in time I'll hire the 2nd Peter shearer as I like the style more than the black one and it's cheaper :).

My friends that don't own a suit are hiring, yeah that's a good idea to take a female friend, I don't have any older male friends though.

  • +2

Hire a suit - Myer have a suit hire place inside their CBD stores.

You won't get anything better for a budget of $300 and the hire suits are decent. It's saved my friends and brothers on a number of occasions.

    • Yeah if I can't get a quality suit on time I'll be hiring.
I didn't know Myer had suits for hire thanks GourmetFoodie :)

  • +2

I would have recommended Hallenstein, since I got a 100% wool suit that is well fitted for just over $110 AUD using discount codes
However since time is not on ur side as the school formal is this Friday, I would recommend Target as the fitting is relatively ok for a suit off the rack.
Since u say it is for a school formal, I'm going to assume you're around 17 and u might still grow taller/wider, so I would advise you not to buy an 'expensive suit' and wait til you're abit older.

    Hope that helps
Wool suits are more expensive as it is a costlier material but they're breathable. Polyester suits are not breathable, so they're cheaper and you'll sweat on a warm day.(still great for a night occasion)

    • +1

      Thanks for the reply mmd.

Wow a wool suit for around $100, if I can't get a good suit on time I'll be hiring, and checking out the wool suits on Hallenstein, thanks mmd :).

I'm unit l unlikely to grow taller, maybe wider though?

Are well suits more fragile, easier to be stretched?

      • +1

Yes it was a great deal especially for a skinny fitted 100% wool suit off the rack. Bought one suit shortly after this expired deal when it was on sale, used a mystery code and paid in NZD. It fits better than my tailored suit!
Fortunately I bought a cheap suit (sub $70) from Hallenstein before, so I knew I was going to fit it with confidence. And the $70 suit got lots of wear out of it.

I'm unit l unlikely to grow taller, maybe wider though?

I would still wait, unless you get an analyst job at Westpac or a great bargain comes up. You never know. Imagine if you bought a nice $300 suit next month and have a growth spurt next year…

Are well suits more fragile, easier to be stretched?

wool? Generally no, infact it is usually more durable than polyster. Obviously depends on quality and what you do.

Have a read of this article :)

  • +2

Haha, This was nice to reaD

    • +2

Are you Broadening something? Hehe :D

  • +1

Where's that floral suit from that deal some time ago? That's why you buy first, think later. You never know what situation might require you to suit up.

  • +2

Op shop. Find a style you like that's not too far away from your size and take it to a tailor. Fit is king. Wool, not cotton. Don't waste your money on a new suit until you've a ongoing job that requires one and you've done a bit more research and have more funds to invest.

Alternatively, hire. Almost everyone I know (including myself) who went and bought their first suit in a hurry regrets it.

    • Thanks Shiny Mew for the reply.

Yeah I've been to op shops but I hardly see any good suits, lots of women's clothes though :(.

Yeah if I can't get a quality suit I'll be hiring.

  • +3
    1. never heard of Peter Shearer so dont know

    2. Navy, charcoal and dark gray are more versatile than black in terms of styling. Unless it specifically asked for black suit, get something else. You do not want to be seen dressed in black jacket, black pants, black shoes and black belt. Add a black leather glove, you can probably apply for the funeral home vacancy haha.

Get a navy instead.Windowpane pattern if you are confident. Then you can pair it with a dark brown shoes or oxblood colour if you can find them. Oxford style is more formal than derby. so get that. If you are game enough, you can wear (single or double) monkstraps.

Your belt can be the same color as your shoes. One shade darker or lighter is also okay. That way you don't appear monotone.

if you want to introduce some vibrant colors into the ensemble, then time to grab some fancy quirky socks. Go crazy with colours, designs and patterns since people will only get a glimpse of it from time to time provided your pants is properly fitted ( half to one break).

you can also go crazy with the tie and pocket square, but that's the advanced level. Choose neutral color with minimal patterns. A simple white pocket square is okay.

    1. it's your preference really. if you are skinny, vest is a good way to add a bit of silhouette to your frame.

    List of stores:
    1. M.J Bale
    2. Saba (website has sales going on , few are below $250 at the moment).
    3. Bell and Barnett outlet
    4. Oxford outlet
    5. Topman
    6. Trenery
    7. Calibre if you are lucky
    8. Jack London
    9. Ben Sherman
    10.Peter Jackson

    Good luck

P.S : please do not use Axe as your cologne. If you don't have any cologne, go to David Jones or Myer, have a chat with the sales assistant and pretend you are in the market of a bottle of perfume. be courteous and some will be happy to supply you with a sample vial, enough for 2-3 wearings.
    4.

    • +2

Haha, yeah your right black can only really be used a few times, as an Ozbargainer it's best to go for Navy, charcoal and dark gray.

Yeah I'm definitely after a red tie and a pocket square.

Yeah I am skinny no matter how much I eat I can very l never put on and weight.

Wow thanks for that list of stores :).

You sir are a true Ozbargainer :)

  • +1

I wouldn't worry about needing a good quality one for job seeking yet. That's a few years away and you'd probably grow a bit more at this age. Just get something cheap.

  • +1

If there's a DFO nearby try that. You'll usually find some really nice suits for a decent price.

    • Thanks BobbyJ for the reply :).

      DFO is that a store?

      • +1

        DFO=Direct Factory Outlets.

There are none in SA but Harbour Town Shopping Centre in Adelaide is pretty much the equivalent.

        • +1

Ah thanks RoughMetaphors :), I learn something new on Ozbargain everyday :)

  • +1

I also think you should try DFO. You can get a decent wool suit for under $300 at Oxford. Look for a cut that suits you.

    • Thanks TailsK for the reply :).

      DFO?
Thanks for the recommendations, I'm looking at Oxford hearing lots of good things.

  • Black suits are for funerals, chick's will be more interested if you wear charcoal.

If it's just for a one off I'd hire and then get a proper suit when you have a bit more cash

    • Thanks for the reply.

chick's will be more interested if you wear charcoal.

      No wonder in single! Hahaha.

I can go higher I'm just frugal, really I like never spend money except bills and stuff.
The only time (if ever) I buy something is for something big, special, and physical that I can keep.

-Go to Oxford. They have a massive sale on now, and you'll get a fairly decent suit for $250-300. Much better quality than YD, Connor etc.

-Don't buy a black suit. Buy a dark navy suit. You want to be able to use it for job interviews and university balls. Black is for funerals only.

-Don't spend more than $350. You'll probably only wear this thing 2-3 times/year until you graduate uni.

    • Thanks chillin222 for the reply :)

Yeah I'm hearing good things about Oxford, and today a friend pointed out one of there stores, they where having a sale, he knows I'm nuts about bargains.

Yeah I want to keep it at that much too.

Buy a really cheap, passable quality one. Then spend the rest of your money getting it tailored.

    • Thanks for the reply zhuang281 :)

      That's a good idea.
I've heard some Ozbargainer's saying that they get tailor made suits really cheap in Asia, I've been thinking of a holiday there next December.

If you have time, go to a few op shops and you can pick up a nice suit jacket for coins. For some reason there are really good jackets at Salvation Army Stores and "Save the Kids" ones, with a bit more effort Good Sammys is cheap. <$50
Ties are about $1 at op shops.
A nice shirt can be found at Connor/Ed Harry/Tarocash. Personally, I would recommend buying a new shirt as they come in handy and tend to wear down quickly.
Business pants in black can be bought anywhere, but target is always cheap ($20)
New shoes would be recommended, buy something stylish and comfortable!

The secret is in how you assemble the look, get a stylish female friend to give you advice.
Personally, I prefer to go black pants, coloured shirt, suit jacket to contrast shirt. Shoes same colour as belt. Tie choice will vary depending on your colour choice.

Got mine from Topman. Think it was 250ish. Won't need to get rid of it anytime soon so think of it as an investment. If your cousin marry's your cousin, you got s suit for that. If your dog dies, you got a suit for that. If you need to chill wit ur homie Putin up in that Russian federation, you got a suit for that.

      • 1 for top man. They have some very good off the shelf fitting suits (so you won't need tailoring).

They have 3 different pant lengths( Short, Medium, Long) - and the jackets come in regular skinny and ultra skinny.

Would highly recommend for a quick cheap/value for money suit that looks good.

If you want quality - go towards MJ Bale etc… then get it tailored. From what it sounds like you don't have the luxury of time.

More importantly than the brand and material is the fit. So focus on that.

      Have fun mate!

I've just bought a suit from Iconic with 25% off + cashrewards. They have express shipping and plenty of suit as well.

Try checking out Connor free shoes with every full price suit. :)

Oxford outlet is my regular place in Sydney and possibly in other cities too. Merino wool super 100 suits with decent shirts, shoes and ties under the one roof. The regular store is often 50-60% off but the outlet will offer even greater savings. You do need to try it on regardless of what you buy.

Can always try lowes … thats where i got mine from for $99 (about 10yrs ago lol). Microfibre so not too hot in summer, and i only ever wear mine to weddings and the races, so the inevitable spilled drinks (why do the drunks never spill on themselves???) wipe off pretty easy

This. Cheap but hey, you're a bloke and can get away with it. Just stay classy and remember not to rape.

H&M have suit jacket and pants going for $145 total, obviously not the best quality but most likely better than Target/Big W and the Aussie high street labels. Add belt, pocket square, tie and dress shirt, and you'll be up for $250 total. Given you'll barely wear it, and might even still be growing, it'll probably be your best option. I have their navy blue slim fit suit, quite a good fit and managed to survive a year of student exchange :D

Bracks or Van Heusen at Myer. Decent quality pants, jackets and shirts you'll actually wear again. Buy charcoal for the most reuse rather than blue or black.

Try Van Heusen outlet. You may be able to get a very decent suit for $199ish
