Always thought portable SSD's were too expensive? Not anymore. Faster than the old T3 and smaller. 5 star review here: https://www.pcauthority.com.au/review/review-samsung-portabl…

Using exchange rate of 0.79 at Citibank to calculate price.

The last iteration of this portable SSD, the T3, proved very popular as a slick, quick and sexy means for sneakernetting files around the place, or hosting media. The ‘sexy’ may be disputed by some, but to us, the nicely palmable shape was lovely to hold and pocket, and set it apart from the great many regular USB key products available. The updated T5 is here, and it is a little smaller (74 x 57.3 x 10.5 mm), a little quicker (up to 540MB/s claimed, vs 450MB/s for the T3), and comes in capacities up to 2TB (2TB/1TB/500GB/250GB available).

The Samsung Portable SSD T5 elevates data transfer speeds to the next level and unleashes a new experience
in external storage. With a compact and durable design and password protection, the T5 is truly easy to carry
and stores data securely.

Fast transfer speeds
With Samsung V-NAND flash memory and a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface, the T5 provides transfer speeds
of up to 540 MB/s*, that’s up to 4.9x faster than external HDDs**. Transfers and backups of
large-sized data including 4K videos and high-resolution photos will be much quicker and faster.

  • Performance may vary depending on host configuration. To reach maximum transfer speeds of 540 MB/s, the host device and
connection cables must support USB 3.1 Gen 2 and the UASP mode must be enabled.
** Based on internal test results compared to a Samsung external HDD 500GB.
    Test system configuration: Asus® Strix Z270E Gaming motherboard, Intel® Core™ i5-7600 @3.5 GHz,
    DDR4 1066 MHz 4 GB, OS-Windows® 10 x64, Performance measurements based on CrystalDiskMark 5.2.1.
    Metal minimalism
The top to bottom metal design and rounded unibody fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. The T5 comes
in two distinct aluminum finishes - an alluring blue for 250 GB and 500 GB models, and a deep black for 1 TB
    and 2 TB models.*

  • 1 GB=1,000,000,000 bytes, 1 TB=1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
Lower capacity may be demonstrated by your computer due to use of a different measurement standard.
    Compact
    and light
Smaller than the average business card,
weighing just 51 grams, and only 10.5 mm thick. The compact,
light and slim T5 is the perfect portable storage.

Solid inside and out
Stay worry-free. The T5 has no moving parts and a sturdy metal body, so it can handle drops of up to 2
meters*. The optional password protection with AES 256-bit hardware encryption keeps your personal and
private data more secure*. It’s all confidently backed by a 3-year limited warranty**.

  • The internal free fall shock test was conducted under controlled conditions.
** For more information on the warranty, please visit www.samsung.com/support
    Management software
The T5 comes embedded with new intuitive software for PCs and Macs* to easily set the password and get the latest firmware updates. You can also download the mobile app for Android smartphones and tablets.**
  • Software requires Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), Android 4.4 (KitKat), or higher. Older versions of the Windows, Mac and Android operating systems may not be supported.
** Firmware update requires PC or Mac connection. Android app available on Google Play.

Connect with ease
Connect the T5 to an extensive range of devices from PCs, Macs, smartphones and other devices.* The included
USB Type-C™ to C cable and USB Type-C to A cable give you seamless connectivity without the hassle of
purchasing additional adapters.**

Is a bit 'wordy'that post hey? Now what I need to know, is can I hack this open for a 200 dollar 500gb ssd to pimp my laptops currently empty storage bay. Hmmmmm. Off to YouTube for a looksee.

Inside is an mSATA drive and a USBC to SATA bridge. So, unless your laptop is 3-5 years old, probably not. mSATA came and died a while ago. You could probably buy and mSATA to SATA adapter and install it in a 2.5in bay though.

There's a photo here, but I couldn't tell if it was actually removable. I'd definitely need a matador to sata adapter, this still seems relatively cheap for a 500gb ssd, especially a Samsung one. I was looking at the cheap 480gb from Umar… Seems slow!

Matador and SATA don't go well together, whatever adapter you may have discovered.

You can get the adapter here for $1.69 delivered. $3.99 for local stock.

      • Sweet, it's looking easier!

        • What laptop do you have? If its 2+ years old most likely will have the mSata slot thus not needing an adapter.

        • @Levity: dell 7567, bought via here! So it's pretty new, it's running a 256gb ssd as primary, but it's also got a empty sata 2.5 bay. I had a Seagate 2tb drive in there, but it slowed the boot time a lot, and was also fairly loud, compared to me laptop being utterly silent when not gaming… So I'm looking for a cheap large ssd for steam game storage. :)

  • Not a bad price

  • I guess the T2 and T4 models failed their new flammability testing and were scrapped.

    • Only the odd ones survived the fire?
