edit again: Looks like it's not a pre-order any more!

edit: I ordered on the 18th and received a shipped notification with tracking number on the 19th… so maybe they're shipping it early.

Fed up with cheap screwdriver kits getting chewed up and stripping your screws? Time to join the big boys with this precision kit by Xiaomi, in conjunction with Wiha. Won't someone think of the screws??

The 24 bits are 60HRC S2 tool steel and come in a sandblasted anodized aluminium case. It looks a bit like the aluminium shell from the original 16,000mAh Xiaomi power banks. The driver handle is aluminium as well.

Here's an overly dramatic video showing the kit.

If you're not familiar with Wiha, they're the ones who can get away with selling $990 screw driver sets.

The bits are magnetically attached to the case.

List of bits:
- PH000 / PH00 / PH0 / PH1 / PH2
- SL1.5 / SL2.0 / SL3.0 / SL4.0
- P2 / P5
- T2 / T3 / T4
- TR5 / TR6 / TR8 / TR10 / TR15
- H1.5 / H2.0
- U2.6
- Y3
- TRI2.3

@Doge: Because the original comment was implying that Xiaomi fraudulently photoshopped their screwdriver onto an image of Wiha's CEO and illegally used wiha's logo on their product.

I thought it was obvious that a company known for screwdrivers would probably have made the screwdriver bits in this screwdriver set. The overall package looks very Xiaomi (it's like their 16,000mAh power bank after all), so that part would probably have been designed or contracted by Xiaomi.

        • @Doge:

Something is fishy. Balatant cash grab by Wiha?

This was my thinking too. This product just doesn't make any sense otherwise.

@shawnsmaggot: Maybe it'd make more sense in China. I've heard that Xiaomi have a very large following in China, where they're regarded by some as the Apple of China. They've put out lots of high-quality items, like the ceramic Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2 which was designed by Philippe Starck. They shook the power bank market with their really cheap but high-quality power banks.

So if Philippe Starck is willing to work with Xiaomi, I see no reason why Wiha should shy away. The Western world would be understandably skeptical though, as they probably don't see Xiaomi in the same light. Xiaomi isn't a cheapo backyard company though, their valuation in 2014 was US$45 billion.

When you look at it closely, how much are those 24 little bits worth? If Xiaomi made a large volume order with Wiha, how much do you think they'd pay for 24 4mm bits? $1? $2? $5? That still leaves a lot of money left over for branding, the case, and the driver, plus a small amount of profit. I think they're big enough to make money from volume rather than margin.

  • Having already owned a couple precision sets including Jackly brand, I must say I'm very tempted at jumping the gun on this one. The problem is that I just don't feel good about this. There's something about it that does not make me 100% sold (at this price point).

I then found another product called "Nanch" Precicion Screwdriver Set. It has pretty good reviews all over (ali, banggood, amazon etc.). No branding at all, but reviews were good on ergonomics and practicality (placement of bits, bit length and in-built extension rod. Also possibly ratcheting feature!?). Steel quality is as dubious as its brand name but going by the reviews a lot of people were surprised it turned out to be of "better" quality (than the average Chinese precision sets?) and has been holding up well.

I know the Xiaomi brand and the usual quality of their products. The Xiaomi one got an aluminium case with a push-in open/close latch, a very neat feature. High quality bits of better grade steel and all. I'd exclude Wiha as a purchasing factor as I believe Wiha only took part in the design process.

Just writing here perhaps any fellow Ozbargainer had come across this "Nanch" set can share their experience.

Here's an unboxing video comparing the two https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2xheGvVAII

It's in Chinese but you get the picture :P

Nanch is a Japanese brand and they ARE high quality.
      Watch out for FAKES!

Get the 100mm long 4mm bits they are awesome!

      • Yeah I think I'm gonna go for the Nanch Tools set!

Do you know how to distinguish the fake ones? Or the genuine has to be "Made in Japan"?

Can you pls also link the Nanch 100mm bits you recommended?

        • +1

Well I can't seem to find the 100mm bits anywhere anymore! Maybe they stopped making them? The standard bits are 45mm long and do a great job getting down small openings. I purchased from Amazon, they are much cheaper on eBay but I have no idea how to pick fakes. Some Ebay sets are shipped from Japan which may indicate they are authentic…

great little thing, ordered. thx op.

  • Says the code doesn't exist?

    • Did you log in? Copy/paste? I just tried it, it still works.

      • Yeah all good now, think the site was bugging out on the tablet.

Hmm interesting, I just got an email from Geekbuying saying my order has been sent out, along with a tracking number. That's a lot quicker than expected.

    • I was surprised as well when I received that email not long ago.

  • The P2 & P5 bits appear to be star shaped (is that pentalobe?), bit hard to tell from the photos.

Does anyone have any other info to confirm if they are/not Pozidriv as geekbuying suggests?

    • I believe they are pentalobe. Pozdriv start with PZ instead of P.

      • Yeah that's what I thought too. Just got excited when I saw the page list them as pozi. Thanks, I'll resist buying this one.

earlier thought I had enough screwdrivers.. then when I saw many positive comment & also reputation build by Xiaomi so far, leads to me for purchasing this… :) thanks OP

  • Looks like it isn't a pre-order any more! Time to start your Christmas shopping?

  • Received mine, it looks and feels just as good as it does in the photos. The bits are WIHA-branded as expected. Build quality and finish are excellent.

    • Great photo! I assume the bits have magnetic ends and they stay in place cos the case is metal? If so, have you tried turning upside down and give it a bit of shake to test if the bits would fall easily?

      • +1

The bits are not magnetic themselves, but the case has magnets inside so the bits stick to the case. You can flip the case upside down and they won't fall out.

When I got the set, all the bits were facing the right way (the designations were all facing up). I thought that was a nice touch.

        • I see. That's very neat. I just received my Nanch set and am pretty happy with it too. It is also S2 60HRC alloy so the bits are also not magnetic. The Xiaomi set is more aesthetically pleasing.

  • who else is selling ? dont think i want to buy from Geekbuying.

Thanks for including the overly dramatic video in the description. It lived up to my expectations haha.

    • I feel like I should move to Melbourne whenever I take something apart now. Maybe chase a red ball of yarn too.

      • LOL, I was also thinking of moving to Melbourne too :P

  • just received mine from this deal
