  • Erm…i don't think this comes with the amex anymore….

Here is the points earning capability of the card:

    Your points earning potential

    1.5 Reward Points

per $1 spent on eligible purchases up to and including $2,000 per statement period

    0.5 Reward Points

per $1 spent on eligible purchases above $2,000 per statement period

    • oops, updated

  • yep no Amex anymore. I got it in Feb with the 60k and will be swapping for something better soon.

    • You still have no foreign transaction fees on this card.

      • +1

But the conversion rate from ANZ is crap, I believe they have their commission baked into the exchange rate itself.

    • +2

      Better?

If you fly domestically at least once a year, there isn't too much "better"

      Unless..:

      • You're thinking of the AMEX Explorer - which is a little different but has the Travel Credit
      • You're referring to wanting an AMEX (in which case you can just keep this and get an AMEX)
      • You're thinking purely of points earn - in which case this card isn't that good
    • +1

Just call them and they waive the annual fee for you. They did for me last year, so free fee + 1 free return flight.

      • How long had you held the card for?

        • 9 months and my card is due for renewal this October.

      • Wow! My card is due for renewal in October too! What did you say exactly to get them to waive it?

        • +1

Just like others said I told them I am about to cancel this card as ANZ axed the Amex and it isn't worth to keep it. Also, I told them I don't want the free flight I just want to earn as much as points I can, they said :"that's ok you can keep that and I can waive the annual fee for your card this year"

Honestly, I didn't call them, they called me and they work in the outbound call canter, not the retention team.

        • @T-man: Oh, interesting! Thanks for that, I will give it a try :)

  • Anyone know if you're eligible for points if you previously held an Anz Frequent Flyer Black?

    • It used to be, I had the black then got the rewards and received points. Not sure if they've updated the terms.

      • Definitely used to be.

        • It is, i got both cards and got the points for both of the cards. However, if you have the black reward card, then you are not eligible for any other reward cards.

  • No more Amex sir
Got rid of mine when they got rid of amex

    • Why though? It's still a good card.

  • I thought ANZ cut its ties with AMEX? If this does actually come with an AMEX card for higher points earning than definitely a good pickup.

    • Definitely no more AMEX
As you said ANZ completely cut its ties with AMEX - none of their cards have AMEX anymore

    Is this offer targeted?

    1. Bonus Velocity Point offer available to new and approved applicants who are specifically invited by ANZ & Velocity to apply for the Bonus Velocity Frequent Flyer Point offer on an ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures account by 31 October 2017 and who make $500 of net eligible purchases within three months of approval. • +1

$500 within 3 months is pretty good. I'm considering picking up this card for the points, free flight and lounge pass.

  • So 1.5 Anz Points per $ = 0.75 Velocity Points per $?

Also with the Free Domestic Virgin Flight can you use Velocity points to upgrade to Business if a Business Saver award is available? Also what does the free flight book into- Getaway, Elevate, or Freedom?

    • It's for the cheapest fare bucket.

      • and availability for reward flights is pretty rubbish, it's even worse than velocity rewards as a basic (red) tier member. i was hoping to take a holiday to cairns with my wife…… nup, we're going to adelaide. leaving on a 6am flight, returning at 6pm flight. it's a very shitty itinerary.

  • +1

Free flight has to be booked 60 days in advance and can only be used by card holder. Not transferable like the AMEX flights

    • Correct and this is probably the most significant limitation of the flight

    • +2

However I found that ANZ's free flight allows more and farther destinations compared to AMEX e.g. Melb to Perth, Darwin, Cairns…

      • Melbourne to Kalgoorlie even - there's a direct flight some days of the week!

  • I closed ANZ Frequent flyer card 3 months ago but I never had ANZ travel adventure card . will i be qualify for points ?

    • as long as you have not held a ANZ Travel Adventures Card or transferring from another card then you should qualify as per terms below..

Not available in conjunction with other offers, packages or promotions, when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures credit card within the previous 12 months.

    • I'd call to ask. I previously had an ANZ rewards card, closed it and then applied for the ANZ travel adventures through the point hacks link. Got told I was not eligible for the 40k velocity points because I had the rewards card within the last 12 months :(

  • anyone able to confirm how to get a invite and if that effects the points signup?

  • Been Thinking to get this one. Any guess what can you do with 60k Velocity points??

    • +1

44600 points for return to Fiji! (Not including taxes)

      • -3

The taxes alone makes it not worth it in my opinion.

        • All points bookings incur taxes as well; Velocity tends to have far lower taxes than flights booked with points on Qantas though, e.g. my wife + daughter are flying business class return to Thailand on velocity points, total taxes ~$235.

        • -3

Did you even read what flight I was replying to.

        • @nightelves: Yes - did you even read what the original question was? I don't care about your flight, but I'm trying to give some more context to the user that originally asked.

        • -1

          @elyobo:

The original question was asking what you can do with 60k points NOT how much taxes needed to be paid for a certain flight. Get your facts straight.

        • -1

@nightelves: Thanks for explaining why your comment was not helpful ;)

        • -1

          @elyobo:

Thanks for not understanding the question properly and going off on a tangent

        • @nightelves:

The taxes alone makes it not worth it in my opinion.

Well someone definitely went off on a tangent :D It was a pretty stupid one though, so I had to help out with some context, but what can you do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        • Meh… $85 one way, $160 the other. Thats $245 for a return trip to Fiji from Melbourne. Find me a cheaper fair… I dare you!

        • @nightelves:

Why did you send me this? That's Etihad converted to Virgin.

I'm not saying it's the best value for money… but if you're paying a $225 annual fee and $245 return… you're essentially paying $470 return to Fiji with 15000 points left over. That's a bargain in my books and well worth the effort to get.

Sounds like you need AMEX points to get Etihad? You can only get AMEX sign up bonuses as a new customer…. which means every 18 months after cancelling a card. These offers are 12 months PER BANK.

        • @dutchcakes:

Flybuys can be converted to Etihad also.

    • -4

Why would you apply for a credit card if you don't even know what to do with the points.

      • Common Sense. Free Return Ticket every year, Lounge access and yea 60k points must be able to get you something.

      • To be fair I think the fact that these sorts of bonus points offers come up on Ozbargain all the time make it somewhat obvious that there's some value in it, even if you're not that familiar with what it can exactly get you :P

    • 65k gets you a business class flight one way Melbourne or Sydney to Bangkok, 70k gets you the same flight return, both actually operated by Singapore Airlines. Taxes are on top of that but are not big, ~130 return for the business class flight.

  • Can anyone see where the "Map" is?

"A complimentary return domestic flight, each year until your card is cancelled2.
So check out the map and start planning your next adventure."

    • +1

When I redeemed this earlier in the year, it was AU wide, and the map was tied up in the ANZ Rewards website portal. I booked Melbourne to Perth return, so it was definitely worth it at the time.

    • +1

      https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/rewards/travel-…

Scroll down, select your departure point.
Being from Darwin, I'd get this card twice if I could just for the return flight.

  • +3

I think its a decent deal still even without the Amex. Earn rate not as good but free domestic flights return (60 days notice), the 2x lounge passes are great (went to the one in Melbourne and thought it was awesome - normally about $65 for entry). NOTE: I was able to use these lounge passes for other people if that helps.

You're already ahead with those two things. No international fees for currency conversion and the bonus points are the icing on the cake. Highly recommended if you travel.

    • +1

Yes it is a good card to travel with and makes me think about ditching my 28 degrees.
the flight points and lounge passes more than pay for the cards annual fee.

  • -3

AMEX got rid of all bank issued cards.
Probably a good thing as last time I checked AMEX Sydney airport lounge was overcrowded…

    • +1

      No they didn't.

All the big 4 had AMEX cards. ANZ is the only one to have scrapped them.

There are still all the direct AMEX issued cards that give access to the Sydney Airport AMEX lounge.

    • I was one of 4 people in the Amex lounge on a Friday last school holidays. Flight was delayed as well so had a 'big' arvo in the lounge.

I used my Anz Black to get in. When I applied it said I had 2 entries to the Amex lounge. Do they still honor that, or is it all over?

If no above, I don't recon my Plat Edge will get me in. What's the next best card now that allows entry in that lounge? Qantas discovery? Westpacs annual fee and spend requirement is too high.

      • You used to ANZ Black to get into the AMEX lounge last Friday? That doesn't sound right because ANZ don't have anymore AMEX cards and I'm pretty sure it's the AMEX version of the ANZ Black that allows you entry.. so not sure how to answer this:

When I applied it said I had 2 entries to the Amex lounge. Do they still honor that, or is it all over?

Because I would've otherwise just said no, because they have no AMEX cards.

I don't recon my Plat Edge will get me in

        Correct

What's the next best card now that allows entry in that lounge?

Probably the AMEX Explorer? It can effectively a fee-free card and it also includes the 2x lounge entries to the AMEX lounge.

        • Friday of the last school holidays mate (July). Thought it would be mobbed, was empty.

          Cheers for info re explorer.

As for Anz..Yep they no longer give out an amex. But I still have mine (albeit inactive.. Though it did work well past august 5) and when I signed up the t&cs said 2 entries p.a. into Amex lounge..and I've only used 1?

        • @tunzafun001:

So.. you've got me really curious now on a few points.

Yes, all ANZ AMEX cards were supposed to be inactive from Aug 5. You used yours past Aug 5, for both purchases AND for lounge access, is this what you're saying? And the last time you tried using it was last Friday?

If you were able to use it once last Fridayish, then the only resno you don't have another entry remaining for the year is if they "properly" stop the AMEX cards so they fully don't work anymore.. otherwise yes it seems like you should have another entry remaining.

        • +1

          @illumination:

I did make purchases on my Amex up to August 20, but I haven't used the lounge since the last school holidays (late July). Friday was just a point of reference for a day that I thought would be busy in the AMEX lounge, but wasn't.

In simple form, has anyone tried using their old ANZ AMEX in the AMEX lounge after Aug 20?

  • how is this targeted? i clicked the link and saw the offer for the 60k points, do they not apply points after the application if you were not invited to the deal?

    • +1

      From the page…

Only specifically invited applicants will be contacted by ANZ to supply their Velocity number once the eligibility criteria is met.

  • +1

Yeah a shame that AMEX isn't a part of it anymore but I have a better velocity amex card to use anyway. The free return flight from East to west coast each year is more than worth the annual fee!

    • Not if you're in the flyover State. 🛫🙄🛬

    • I agree! So worth it coming from WA to East coast

  • Was going to get the 40k points deal so this is definitely a good card to pick up,

  • +1

I got this well before they started including a large whack of points. Feels bad man.

  • +1

This card is a good deal for one year because of the points. However, the flight can be quite hard to use because of the 60 day requirement - you have to be planning quite far ahead.

  • I haven't activated my card with the 40k deal. Anyone know if I can cancel it and reapply?

  • What's the chance of applying through the link above and getting the points? Or is it anyones guess

    • Anyone's guess. Call them and confirm.

      • +3

It could be a fight going via an AFF thread on a previous deal.

        • Probably. I just had a dispute with them and it was not at all easy to get it resolved, although it did eventually end up getting sorted out happily.

  • The below seems like a better deal to me, but I am interested in others' opinions:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/326444

    • +2

I'm personally going to apply for the flyer next month to take advantage of 120k. But the virgin money cards require high spend, and staggered to 3 months. Where as this one (if eligible), only requires a $500 spend.

  • I previously held an ANZ platinum card. I gave it up in June. Would I be eligible for this? I have excellent credit.

  • Anyone knows if we can book the flights and cancel the card before the flight dates?

    • +1

You should be able too, this was with AMEX as-well. It shouldn't have an affect, but just ring and ask.

  • My card is about to renew in Nov, and I'm thinking of cancelling it. I honestly don't use the free flight, and with no Amex I do have to apply for an AMEX again now.

As someone mentioned above, I may call and complain and see if they'll waive the annual fee! I might keep it, it is useless for buying online and paying no international fees but hardly worth keeping otherwise.

    • How did you go? Mine's about due as well and I think if they don't waive then not worth keeping.

    • Just an update on me - I called to see if annual fee can be waived and no go. It's unfortunate as I am actually a heavy user of the card (use it almost daily) so you would think that they would see the account as very active and worth keeping.
They tried offering me another card with a lesser fee but little benefit. My fee is due in 2 days so I told them I'd call back to cancel. We'll see if they offer me anything else but if not I'll cancel.
