  • You need to spend $1500 each months over 3 month to get the 60k.

    • +1

My monthly is easily more than that. Below is some of what counts towards the spend.

60,000 bonus Velocity Points offer is available to new approved Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card account holders who apply by 31 October 2017. 20,000 bonus Velocity Points will be awarded for every month $1,500 or more is spent on Eligible Transactions for 3 months from card approval. Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).

      • Also consider the High Flyer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321933
Extra $225 for another 60k points

        • Yeah, I think the 3k/month is a tougher spend to hit.

        • @Chivalry:

has a pretty good business case though!!! you get x2 lounge access which can be sold for $100 total, brings down the investment to $149 ($249-$100). You get 120k…wow

i just applied for the high flyer card…gonna be overseas for next three months, easy to get this money spent, hoping my multiple earlier applications wont deter…fingers crossed.

        • @Damnsmart: actually I've had trouble selling the lounge passes for even 25

        • @nubix:

ohh ok, i can see qantas lounge access being sold for $50 on average. didnt realize velocity lounge access can be any lower than that….hmmm, may be i can ozbargain if i sell my qantas for $50 and buy velocity for $25 :-)

        • @Damnsmart: qantas passes gets you into their international lounges but virgin only have domestic lounges.

      • I made a typo on my comment above about what counts, I meant what doesn't count towards the spend

Darnit… the bulk of my monthly transactions are Government ones or BPAY.

Virgin Flyer use to be great for me but these changes to their Rewards T&Cs means it's now useless.

Now for the next amex velocity deal.

        • +2

If all else fails you could always buy woolies/coles giftcards or visa giftcards to use on everyday expenses

        • @montorola: I have this card on the way, and that is exactly what I plan on doing!

You can also order cards via places like here I assume: https://www.giftcardstore.com.au/

You could load up 3 x $500 prepaid cards, job done.

I was going to pay my private health insurance annual fee and also the years insurance for my fiancees engagement ring - rang them today, neither count!

  • if you go through points hack it was 120,000 points, got rejected though… sad

    • what do you mean by that, can you explain if you are referring to high flyer card or velocity flyer card….

  • Does anyone know if purchasing giftcards would be considered as the $1500 spend a month? I know some credit cards treat giftcard purchases as cash advances

    • +1

definitely yes, thats a purchase in a retail store/online…. i have done that multiple times

    • yeah just not from AusPost, which is where I normally buy prepaid visa cards.

I will use https://www.giftcardstore.com.au/ for this card, which i will receive in a few days

  • VA may put the 2 lounge passes on your membership, if so they can't be sold or given away.

    • They really should make them transferable to family members at least, so those with status get benefits.

  • QF now also put complimentary passes on the membership, (unless the passes come through a cc sign on via a bank).

  • So I'm in 12month limbo with both ANZ blacks, NAB, St George Amplify, got Amex PE.

Cant find any other no annual fee with bonus points offers (come on Westpac), guessing this is the next best at $64 for 60k. I guess that's roughly 0.1c per point.

  • NAB doesn't necessarily have a 12 exclusion period.

  • $64 for 60,000 points… you can't buy points cheaper than that.

Then cancel after the first year.

    • not to mention $129 VA Voucher. I assume people with Velocity points will fly virgin.

    • +1

      I'll be cancelling in Jan!

If they're anything like Amex, they may even try and retain you with points…fingers crossed. Just flew to Paris in a first class suite, I'm a full points whore now!

  • any referral points?

  • can anyone confirm if the following qualifies as eligible spend? or do they fall under 'semi-government'? i am confused as hell with their long-winded t and c:
    - Energy Australia electricity bill
    - Urban Utilities water bill
    - Brisbane Airport Corporation parking

    • I'd ring them up. They were a bit useless, but in the end I managed to get confirmation that my private health insurance nor my jewellery insurance would be counted. gift cards it is.

      • How is that in connection to government?

        • it isn't, they are private companies. However, they told me they do not count.

Took me a while to get sense out of them, and I did argue the same point. Best they could come up with was ' it has to be like in a shop or online'. The same giftcard I buy at AusPost is available at Woolworths so it's a no brainer for me.

        • @nickyd84: I spoke with their customer service and was told beginning 4 Oct 2017, insurances of any type now counts toward eligible spend to earn velocity points.

        • @iversonjack: good to know, thanks. I've hit month 1 target already and confirmed but useful to know for next month!

    • Fair chance they don't really know what triggers as an actual spend on their system. Better to play safe and say it doesn't count.

All my bills have always counted, but I always use Postbill pay or similar and then take up the 'pay with Paypal' option if available.
