Nice offer but very messy T&C. High level review - NAB issued cards won’t get 20k bonus points until 28 Feb 2026.
Other entities like Westpac or Amex you’ll get within 30 days of those bonus points being sent (should be faster).

For churners, makes the NAB option quite unattractive.

Also, I think all spend requirements need to be hit by 30 Sep.

    • Dang. Only NAB cards are open to me at the moment. :(

I currently hold the High Flyer card; I can assume the Flyer card is no go for me?

    • +4

You don’t need to meet spend requirements by 30 September.

      • The website format appears to have changed. When the offer first went live, it read something like, needing to meet all offer requirements by 30 September which indicated that it was required. Now it is more vague.
Happy to be proven wrong, but I’d just be careful about it.

    • Would Virgin Money fall under cards issued by NAB?

  • I won’t say no & thanks for posting … it seems like a bonus 30k points on the second option as looks like earn 30k, get 60k.

    • But don’t you need to spend $30k for that amount?

      • School fees alone will get me there

        • What kind of school is your kids going to?!

          • @nightelves: One that takes Amex with no extra fees! Not wanting to start the debate on expensive schools in this thread but yeah, school fees aren’t cheap so any extra points like this helps go towards more holidays.

            • +1

@mlakmlak: If it’s the case you should split it up between yourself and your partner to maximise the bonus. Basically 270k points if you both qualify for the Westpac Platinum and meet 60k spend.

    • +2

It reads as 60k bonus points for 60k spend to me. But that does require you to spend $60k…

      • +1

        Hmm you may be right?

      • +1

doesn't he mean spend $30k, get 30k base points, 30k bonus points. A total points of 60k is what he gets

        • +1

Still not clear tbh. I’m feeling it may actually be “earn 60k & double it for a total of 120k”

But strange that marking didn’t capitalise on this & manipulate the bonus to suggest “120k” instead of “capped at 60k”

      • Yeah the Ts & Cs state, “… up to a maximum of 60,000 bonus Velocity Points.“

  • -7

Double earn rate is a much better deal, easy decision

    • +8

Totally depends on how many points you are earning…

    • How much would you realistically spend to get the 60k points though?

    • +10

You’d need to be spending $4-5k minimum per month to make the double earn worthwhile. I think I’ll bank the 20k points within 30 days of hitting the minimum spend and move on to the next card.

    • That would only be if you are spending $20k+ on your credit card in 6 months?

    • +3

Not for me. My spending is not high enough to benefit from the extra earn rate. The 20K bonus straight up is the easier option.

    • Edit: For some cards you only need to spend $10k in 6 months to break even. Everyone's mileage varies of course.

      • Not if that $10k spent would otherwise be on another points earning card, and especially not if that $10k counts towards a sign on bonus for that card.

    • +1

On the face of it I agree with you - since there is the potential to earn up to 60,000 bonus Velocity points.

However, the T&Cs says that for the Double Earn Rate offer, "the bonus Velocity Points will be credited to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account by 30 April 2026". That's 8 months away!

So now I'm undecided which offer is better for myself.

  • +1

Makes that AMEX deal even better… if you can get approved!

  • Does anyone know with AMEX cards if the supplementary card holder can take on new offers for AMEX cards if they haven't got a main one themselves? Thanks.

    • +4

Supplementary cardholders are eligible for the bonus points.

    • +2

yes, they can. I already confirmed with AMEX.

  • I currently have a NAB and Amex. I last closed a Westpac and Virgin Money card less than a year ago.

Is it still the case that there's no time frame for getting the Virgin Money deal again? In the past a "new customer" has simply meant you aren't a current customer.

    • Yeah no time frame but they’re quite strict now.

      • Strict for approvals, or do you think they won't consider repeat customers as new?

        • Instant rejection these days but you might be lucky.

  • are both offers for the new card holders only?

  • +1

If I have a card from ANZ, earning ANZ points. Transfer to Velocity. Which option will I fall into? 1 or 2?

  • Any idea of minimum salary for the amex card?

  • Time to jump on VFF. Thanks OP

    • +4

Virgin Money declined my application right away anyway.

      • +1

NAB (who underwrite the card) have turned off the taps — much harder for churners to get approved for these cards now.

        • And even when we do they're getting stingy with the credit limits (annoying because I throw the 0% balance transfers into my mortgage offset account).

        • From your experience, is there any difference in the process between an actual NAB card vs other brand cards underwritten by NAB (e.g. Citi, Virgin Money, Qantas)?

Similar to your experience, I find that applying for the Citi/VM cards can be hit and miss, where I typically get rejected in the first instance, and once I submit an email for manual approval, it gets approved.
In comparison, my past two applications for NAB cards were approved straight away.

          • @babipanggang: NAB products are fine. They control churners through their exclusion periods (18 months).

Citi and other products have no exclusion period, so they're controlling churners by denying their applications.

It is also important to remember the credit cards reward market is rapidly devaluing atm, so nothing is set in stone.

      • Yeah Virgin has been flagging churners these days.

      • Did you close any virgin cc recently?

        • I normally apply 3 months after of closure Virgin Money cc. But this time round was instantly rejected and a manual review didn’t work either.

          • @nightelves: Thanks, Can you ask for a manual review if not approved? What did they say?

        • Never applied for one before.

          Still in team Qantas atm.

      • Damn… sorry to hear!

  • If applied and not yet approved for one of the eligible cards, if I activate before approval will this be applied?

    • +1

Should be fine. It’s the approval that they usually ask.

      • I just got approved for high flyer card two weeks ago and then this offer comes up. Would they let me tag on ?

        • In the same boat with a different card. What's the harm in clicking through and activating it anyway. Might get lucky and wake up to some bonus points in a couple of months time. Worst case it'll still just be 0 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

        • Call them and ask

          • @31mop: Whom do I call: Virgin Money or Velocity Frequent Flyer ?

        • +1

It’s fine as long as the points get credited within the specified time frame then it’s fine. Many people were in your same situation from past deal and they have been credited with the bonus points.

  • +2

With qantas’ latest rewards downgrade plus the downgrade in planes and service I’m looking to get rid of my qantas amex discovery card. Which velocity card looks like the best deal in relation to yearly fees, points etc? Not looking for a top tier card.

    • Westpac Platinum if you have an account or profile as it’s only $49 for 75k points.

      • +1

Unfortunately I don’t already have a westpac acc

        • +2

You can just book to go into Westpac and get them to create your profile with 100 points ID.

          • @nightelves: Great thanks. (Sorry I just realised I gave u a thumbs down vote rather than up)

        • You can just make a free Westpac Choice debit account and it qualifies you as an account holder for the cc fee discount. There’s also an offer on the debit account where if you spend $50 on it via your Apple/Google wallet you earn $50, which makes it even better.

        • $300 AF from Citi and not part of the bonus.

      • I believe it is 49 plus 75 for the Velocity Rewards Program fee so its 124 all in.

        • Still cheaper than Citibank

          • @nightelves: Definitely is, but I get my citi annual fees pro rata refunded or downgraded with the pro rata fee as credit.

NAB is cheapest by my calcs on both minimum spend and points to annual fee ratio. But having to keep auto sweep until march is no good for me.

            • @cathalm8: When did you last got a pro rata? It’s not as easy anymore as it used to.

              • @nightelves: Yeah its defo gotten stricter. I got a pro rata refund on citi pretige 2 months ago or less. They offered a downgrade and the refund as a credit. Better than nothing.

    • Why do you think Velocity would be any better? Same issues - different name.

  • Fine print says:

" Must stay opted in to Auto Transfer with ANZ or NAB until 31 March 2026. "

That's a long time to stay with the card, ha.

If that condition was not there, I would sign up for it.

    • Hi i am new to this
Question- why wount u stay until april? As in what difference would it make as we would have paid for the card for a year anyway right?

      • +1

Having less credit cards, is better when applying for the next credit card offer, at another bank.

Also, some banks refund the annual fee, for unused months (pro-rata).

        • Thank you, i see.

I read that most banks dont offer refunds anymore

  • Saw this in the T&C

To be eligible to receive either of the Runway Upgrade options available under the Offer, you must:

    1. for an Eligible Credit Card issued by either ANZ or NAB keep the Auto-Transfer opt-in continuously active from 1 October 2025 until 31 March 2026; and
    • +1

Wonder if the bonus points will credit at the end or each months. If each month there’s no reason you can’t get the bonus points within the first couple of months then cancel the card. Pretty sure they can’t clawback the bonus points.

    • +1

And in another section, it says:

For Eligible Credit Cards issued by NAB, the 20,000 bonus Velocity Points will be allocated to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account by 28 February 2026.

I’m completely confused now. Can we opt in for the 20k option, get a NAB card, and then close it after meeting the requirements, and still get the bonus or not?

  • The way I see it is the auto transfer means the points will go across each month so if you cancel after two months you won’t get the full lot of points

    • That’s what I’m thinking as well. They can’t really clawback the points after it’s transferred.

  • +1

FYI As per T&C's, you have to make sure you get the confirmation email from Velocity first, before applying for CC:

    "receive an email from Velocity Frequent Flyer to the email address nominated in your Velocity Frequent Flyer account confirming that the Runway Upgrade selection has been activated (‘Confirmation Email’);
after receipt of the Confirmation Email, apply and be approved for an Eligible Credit Card;"

    • -1

I don't think it is the case because you need to select one of the options and then you get the message:

      20,000 bonus Points*
Hey xxxx, you selected 20,000 bonus Points* on 14/08/2025 - now, it's time to choose your Frequent Flyer partner credit card to be eligible to receive this bonus.

  • A very important part of the information for "Eligible Credit Cards" was missed out.

2nd point (From original terms and conditions) - "American Express Velocity Business Card, excluding applications via the American Express 'Refer A Friend' card referral program"

Looks like application through referral doesn't qualify

    • How do they know?

  • Can I use something like snip to pay the mortgage and qualify for the min spend?

    • Wait how is it possible to use sniip to pay your mortgage?

      • Surely it’s not

      • Some of these cards eg NAB likely will count SNIIP transactions as eligible spend whereas others like Westpac probably won't - the latter just changed their definition of eligible spending. Every card's definition is different.

I think the big issue is whether SNIIP allows it, last time I looked SNIIP required invoices for payments to bank accounts.

        • Was thinking of getting the westpac altitude and use sniip to meet min spend

          Is that not possible anymore?

          • @Jazzzy-b: You can buy gift cards to meet the minimum spend.

            • @whyisave: I know, its just that i already have too many gift cards lying around
So thought sniip might be a better option

Since when do sniip payments not count?

              • +1

@Jazzzy-b: I don't know about Sniip, as I never used it, but I remember that there used to be fees associated with using Sniip as well.

                • @whyisave: Thats correct, i just thought it would be a good way to earn rewards points on these spends which do add up to a lot

  • I only started using one of these cards literally days ago.
Anyway to try and claim this still?

    • +1

Yeah sign up for a new cc that qualifies.

    • +1

If you go through the offer, you will find out that Velocity just registers your velocity number.
My guess is that Velocity gives away bonus points if
      * this velocity number is registered
      * this velocity number receives bonus points from above credit cards in the offer period.

Just register it and see if you are lucky 😁

      • Has this been the case in the past? These Velocity bonus offers do come up at least once a year.

Would be keen to hear other OzBargainer's experience.

  • Can you apply for two of these cards at the same time and if approved get 2x20k bonus points?

  • +1

Was an email meant to come through confirming it? I still haven't got mine…
