Might want to emphasize it's a single SIM phone without an MicrosD card slot, for those who are wondering why it's so cheap. so you'll be stuck with around 10 gigabytes of user accessible storage.

      Really? So is every iPhone

      • +5

But the point is that this is unusual for a Xiaomi.

        • +4

I was being a little sarcastic there. Being single SIM and no MicroSD is used as an excuse why a phone costs only $100. No such excuses for Apple though.

EDIT: No headphone jack on the iPhone either :)

        • +3

@elektron: Sorry, hard to read sarcasm as pure text.

I don't think it was being used as an excuse (particularly not by scrimshaw who knows his phones).

More of a heads up for people seeing Xiaomi (regardless of price) without dual SIM - because as I said it's very common for Xiaomis to have dual SIM.

At the very least, it usually has one or the other - dual SIM or expandable storage.

I'm sure me and many Xiaomi fans around here absolutely cannot understand why anyone would buy iPhones when you can get $200 Xiaomis with dual SIM, expandable storage and great specs though..!

        • +4

@illumination: Not a problem - I said it with a deadpan face anyway.
While I don't have an attachment to Xiaomi (although I do recognise their value proposition), or any other brand for that matter, I also can't understand why anyone would by an iPhone besides the usual status symbol (really?) / peer pressure / invested in the ecosystem / was given one at work etc excuses.

More to the point, even if I had way too much money, I still wouldn't buy an iPhone for some of the reasons already mentioned above and a few others, e.g. no lossless (not to mention hi-res) audio support over Bluetooth? And that's after they removed the headphone jack? No NFC? WTF?

is the camera good at these days standard ?

You can use Flickr to search for photos taken by any device. Try https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Xiaomi%20Mi4

    • not really…
had 2 of these phones for about a year. In the day time in full sunlight they are good… as soon as the lighting falls the photo quality is crap.

subsequent phones after these were Samsung s7's

the built in MIUI is nice to use.

we had 2 phones bought at the same time from the same chinese online retailer.. and got 2 different versions.. one was rooted and the other wasn't.. different firmware and different versions of the MIUI.. had to download it and install myself.

I bought a Note 4x a while back for my mom.

I'm seriously impressed with MIUI. It is way better than standard Android builds from Sony and Samsung, and even the Lineage/Cyanogenmod I use on my phones. It also comes with a built-in Tasker clone and excellent power management.

    • Yes I can vouch for its camera, I really liked the picture clarity when I owned it.

13mp and 8mp are pretty good considering price.

        • +10

          Not all about the megapixels..

        • +1

          @illumination:

Yeah I get better photos set at 8mp than at 20mp on my phone.

Sensor size and aperture are important specs to consider when evaluating a phone camera on spec sheet. Of coarse other factors come into play irl use.

        • +1

@Ronnnie: Pixel size is important in low light… The higher the resolution, the smaller the pixels. That's why the highest res phone camera's are never the best in low light performance.

        • +1

          @elektron:

Indeed it is hence why you get all these flagships using 12mp sensors so that they can have a bigger pixel size.

You will also noticed the V30 is an example of a phone that reportedly offers good low light performance, but uses a small pixel design camera. So it isn't always the case.

Another factor that comes into play is newer flagships moving to dual pixel autofocus.

Edit: Just PMd you the sample pics from my Mi4.

  • NFC ?

    • nope

It's almost 3-4 year old phone, I owned it for a good 2 years. Get the Redmi 4X/ Redmi Note 4x instead of this one.

      Released:Aug-14

  • What's the usual price for these, and is there anything better in the same price range (~$120)?

    • +6

I highly doubt it. 1080p display, snapdragon 801 still very capable (LG G3, Galaxy S5 had this CPU)

      • Yep, the 801 in my Nexus 5 still beats the 625 by 30% in Antutu.

        • +1

Antutu tho. It probably better running the benchmark a few times on each and measure the performance drop. Also the s800 is used in the nexus 5, not the 801. GPU is similar interms of GFLOPS.

According to notebookcheck the 625 can score ~65k in antutu.so you must be scoring ~85k? Ime my 805 powered phone would struggle to score that.

          https://www.notebookcheck.net/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-625-SoC-Be…

        • I got bored and had a look on YouTube and the best people were scoring was around 60k with the nexus 5. So around the same performance as the snapdragon 625. Looking at a lot of benchmarks the two are quite close. Definitely no 30% difference. The old snapdragon 617 might have had a 30% difference, maybe you’re confusing it with that chip.

  • +5

I'd just get a Redmi 4X over this.

    • +4

I'd consider a Mi4 over a Redmi 4x. I realise benchmarks often don't mean a lot in the real world, but as a guide the Redmi 4x has an Antutu score of about 43k, the mi4 is about 61k, so it's no slouch. It also had a flagship quality camera at the time.

      • The Note 4X has a 4100 mah battery, and given the 625 is much more efficient, this results in significantly better battery life. In addition, the GPU is a step up from the 801 (I'm not sure by how much).

        • Also fingerprint reader, it really is a required feature nowdays.

        • +2

          According to this site http://kyokojap.myweb.hinet.net/gpu_gflops/

          Adreno 330 in 801 = 160 GFLOPS
          Adreno 506 in 625 = 130 GFLOPS

It appears the 801 GPU is slightly better.

However the 625 has an advantage of being built on a newer process, so it can maintain performance without throttling as much.

The 625 is a better choice over the 801 imo

        • @sillyhead: not at all, I never used mine, and especially don't need to if I am wearing a smartwatch

        • @sillyhead:

Not for everyone. I have my second phone now with fingerprint reader and disabled that feature on both.

  • You won't be able to use 4G on this phone in AUS.

    2300Mhz (B40) – Optus (Vivid wireless spectrum)

Note the 2300mhz listed above is for Vivid only and is only available in some of the Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane metro areas.

    • what do u mean i have the mi4 and i am on 4g no issues

      • It's not the global version. As stated in the specifications.

4G :LTE band 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300). Those bands don't work in Australia. So you'll only have 3g signal using this phone in Australia.

        • that explains it. i have the LTE version of the mi4 and i have used Telstra SIM cards and OPtus ones with no issues with LTE.

  • Bugger. Looking for a new phone, never had a Xiaomi one but… I really like the headphone jack and microsd card slot.

  • Is it Mi4 "cancro" (that has LineageOS support)? Is double-tap-to-wake supported? Might get one for in-laws.

  • +2

This phone is on the old side. If memory serves me correctly you could also put w10m on it. Nobody would probably want to do that tho. Lol

    • That actually might have been fun to try out, just out of curiosity.

But MS restricted the number of models that would be supported by the Creators Update (fall release coming in 3 weeks), so I would check the xda forums for more info. If not, there's always Android…

      • +1

Yeah this I don't think even supported AU. But you can change registery settings to make it appear to be supported model to get updated to CU. I would do research first though.

  • Anyone manage to use Xiaomi Mi4 to work with Android Auto? Maybe this can be used as a cheap, offline-enabled (download offline map first) GPS unit running on Google Maps, and projected on a car with Android Auto enabled?

    • Based on the specs of the unit, it shouldn't have any issue. May be best way to find about would be go through some linked reviews in the OP.

  • +2

    Memory: 3GB RAM, LPDDR3 933 MHz

  • +1

Thank you OP +1, bought one. As for ShopMonk and their service, it is just top of the World.

  • Probably a stupid question but does anyone know if you can use a MicroSD in place of the sim card? Similar to how many dual sims allow 2 sims or 1 sim + MicroSD.

I ask because the child I'm thinking of doesn't need to use it as a phone, but extra storage would be crucial.

    • Very unlikely. Dont know for certain but it would make zero sense for them to put a hybrid slot on a single sim phone.

      • Yeah you're right, 99% wouldn't make sense. Thanks for your reply.

  • How does one set this up if the list of countries doesn't have Australia or any other English speaking country??

    • +1
      • Thanks, but shouldn't there be a way to set the country to Australia? I've always been able to do it, even with grey import phones.
