200GB Home Wireless Broadband on Optus 12 Month Contract $78 Per Month (Incl. Free Modem) - First 3 Months Free

570

First 3 months free effectively means this works out to about $61 a month. Seems like a good deal to me for anyone waiting on NBN or stuck with substandard adsl speeds. Month to month (free first 3 month offer not available for month to month) and 24 month contracts also available. Terms and conditions available here - http://smb.optus.com.au/opfiles/Shop/All/cis%20smb/Cis%20Doc…

      It's 4G throttled to 12mbps.

Still faster than bad ADSL connections but nowhere near as fast as your mobile.

      • I'm planning on using it mainly for streaming video (various sources, including netflix).

        Would this run ok?

My ADSL was running at best at around 3Mbps and was useless with a house of 7 (esp. at homework time or when all the computers decided to get the same windows update files at the same time).

I decided to try the HWBB modem and have been very happy with it. I have not had complaints since I put it in and it has been very stable. I did put the modem at the highest point in the house at a window facing a base station so have good line of sight. This devie will need to be at a window and it's best you try and find your local basestaion and put in on the same side of the house if you can.

I will say that if someone is streaming HD video, it does slow it down, but as an alterntive to slow ADSL, it is great. I will be one of the last suburbs in Oz to get NBN, so needed an alternative in the meantime.

  • Looking for some advice here for my folks (I pay their broadband 3 houses up the street). Our ADSL speeds is 1 -2mbs.. so I have never bothered with it.

Had Vividwireless Wimax with huge variation in speed. now on Vivid (which is Optus) LTE, 2300. Speed is 3 - 8 mbs (sometimes 10). Quite possible that other Optus frequencies will give better coverage

My folks probably need around ~~60GB t0 100 GB/month. The Vivid plans stepped pricing are not very user friendly 40GB ($59) and then ($89) unlimited.

So either the 200GB or 140 GB deal sound tempting. Only thing in favour of vivid is I already paied for the modem. Maybe I am better off waiting for better deals towards xmas and keep them on unlimited.

    Suggestions?

The optus data sim works in the vivid wireless modem so long as you are in an area with 2300mhz reception. But the vivid wireless sim doesn't work in any other modem.

So you can buy the 140gb sim only plan and put the sim in the vivid modem. You won't have the 12/1 restriction, max speed becomes 150mbps depending on usage and how much optus throttles it to prioritise mobile data.

      • Ahh. Thx
Interesting. Didn't think the world be a sun in the vivid box. But of course. Runs on the same network.

PS. Can I can test with amaysim SIM as Optus mvo ? Check 2300 reception

        • You can try. I don't have one of their sims to test.

  • How does this one Compare to Vivid wireless in Quality of service..

Looking for some inputs on how the respective modems handle multiple devices connected, how's the customer service of Optus and Vivid etc.

I have 6 to 8 devices which needs to Connected to wifi at most times. My ADSL sucks and no NBN till mid 2018.

    • I have used vivid wireless previously and getting 12 referrals (12 free months) and that's the max I can get. Now I'm using this optus home wireless because i can't get any more referral to save money in vivid wireless. I would say optus is more stable. I constantly get 12-13 mbps. As for vivid, I get 10mbps in the morning but night time the speed drops down to around 3mbps. I think this optus is better offer now because you are essentially paying 9 months only. As for vivid if you go with contract will be 24 months, too long. And now vivid is changing the term and charging extra $50 for early termination.

      • Thanks mate. Can either modems handle 6 to 8 wifi devices at a time?

        • Seems to handle devices fine but streaming Netflix/Stan that's when things go pear shaped.

@dins: I had the chance to test both Vivid Wireless and Optus Home Wireless at my home yesterday (borrowed from friends). Strangely I find Vivid working better for me during the peak hours (7:30 PM to 9:30 PM). I couldn't think of any good reason why Vivid could be better than Optus using the same network, frequency etc. and testing being done from same room pretty much at the same time (few mins apart). Possibly Optus allocates some bandwidth for Vivid which happens to be untapped in my area?

          Other Findings
-Vivid Wireless's speed in peak hour varied from 4Mbps to 9Mbps (but most stayed around 8Mbps).
-Optus's speed in peak hour varied from 4Mbps to 11Mbps (but most stayed around 6Mbps).
-Both devices have speed dropped by ~2Mbps when we connect 4 to 5 devices. They suffer more as the devices increase.

So I am not able to go for Optus Home Wireless (even though the deal is quite good). I am gonna go with Vivid Wireless $89 month on month unlimited plan (I have an old Vivid Modem from a friend).

        • @rtgn:

Yeah I'm thinking of changing over to the mobile broadband plan instead. Netflix/Stan not only uses up a ton of data but slows things down big time.

Btw for anyone interested here's more info on this HWB plan

The Optus Home Wireless Broadband WIKI

  • Received everything yesterday and set it up. Did involve moving it around the house to find a good spot next to a window but thus far have got around 12Mbps or a bit over it for the most part. In saying that tho when one or two start using Netflix or Stan then the speeds drop big time. Normal browsing is still ok but speed tests show somewhere around the 1 or 2Mbps mark. That's a bit of a bummer. Plus it seems to eat up data. After playing around with Netflix and different devices around the house for a couple of hours looks like it has chewed through over 6gb of the 200gb already yikes! I wonder if the mobile broadband plan counts Netflix and Stan.

Also anyone know an easier way of keeping track of HWB usage. The Optus site is super glitchy for me. Doesn't seem to work properly on the phone no matter the browser or Safari on MacBook. Downloaded the App that doesn't seem to work with HWB either. Only got it to work on Chrome.

  • considering both the home wireless OR the mobile broadband deal. For the boffins amongst you, does the mobile data chew up quicker than home data? For say Netflix? The portability of the mobile data appeals, however……..
