Western Digital My Book Essential Desktop Hard Drive
$88.00 Each (Save $50)
Starts 28 October - Ends 10 November
One low price. 1TB. 3.5". What it holds. Up to 440 hours DVD or 250,000 MP3s or 200,000 JPGs.

I think these are about $90 at MSY, so for $88 at BigW is pretty competitive for a large chain.

    Cheapest on Staticice is $95

Officeworks should beat $88 by 5%? So that's $83.60 at OW

  • damn cheap

  • Wow, great deal.

  • Hah nicely spotted, maybe it will make a good Christmas present.

  • note, starts in 2 days. don't try OW price match just yet

  • also note: this requires AC adapter for power (included)

    • Yep, it's a 3.5" drive that requires more power and a 12V supply rail that a USB cannot supply. Not sure why some people get confused about this, but they do. Of course, a 3.5" drive is usually heaps faster than a 2.5" laptop drive, and likely to last a lot longer too.

      • 2.5" would last longer, they are generally built with durability in mind since people move them around a lot

This looks like USB 2.0, so the 3.5 drive will be as slow as a 2.5.

  • Great Deal :D

…too bad the finish is glossy..

…oh well, it just a hard drive I guess.

  • Is there an on/off switch on these?

    • Yes.
Only the old ones(the one with a round button) doesn't have switch.

And its cheap but most OW won't price match.

      • Don't quote me but I think the round button was the switch and it is these ones that dont have a switch. But the ones with a round button definitely could be soft turned off.

        • I had both.
The round button was not a power switch. It was a "backup" switch.
The round button model also had no power button.

          The new one does.

        • I can;t reply to grizz directly for some reason. ozbargain bug??

We must have different drives. This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Essential-External-WDG… and the button switches it off and on.

  • Any idea what kind of HD is in the box? 7200rpm? 32MB cache?

    • +1

      It's a WD Green. 5400RPM

  • I bought one of these once but didn't use any of the features.
I dropped this one so I just bought an Elements drive.

    • Good choice. Elements have no crap backup software on them.

  • mln has the iomega 1TB ext HDD for $77. It's 7200rpm drive.

For media playback or rec this is fine. Faster drives are hotter and noisier.

  • Can this one be used with TiVo?

  • i got mine on COTD Iomega 1TB for $49+5.95 =$54.95 :)
