    WD80EZZX. 5400rpm Helium inside.

    • Thanks, would avoid

      • Care to share why? Ta

        • +1

Added complexity to the device, if it leaks your boned.
You want a standard, PMR, 5400rpm drive preferably. No weird SMR writing, no helium - just a plain old hard disk, it's likely to go the distance.

    • I got a couple of WD80EZZX, are you sure they are helium drives?

      • Can't be 100% sure as did minimal research.

    Perfect for storing linux distos.

    • So many Linux distros.

    • +1

Do your distro images end in .flv by any chance? ;)

      • +4

nah .mkv - it's linux shorthand for 'make volume', similar to fdisk.

cheapest price is 180USD. Can't believe they put in a premium quality Helium drive inside for this price! https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/49otf1/wd80ezz…

Great. Bit too big for people who care about size. Two 2.5inch disks is smaller but are capable of 5TB each with a total of 10TB.

  • Is the 8tb version helium?

Can someone explain to a noob why this is worth a 15% premium over the Seagate on the previous page?

    • +3

Wait a sec, I just need to put on a flame suit. Ziiiiiip, there we go.

"Because WD is 10 times better than Seagate"

      But seriously, it is ;).

    • Was using seagates since early 90s… was a big fan… Had to change to WD camp after had a 3TB Seagate NAS failed on me 3 years ago… lucky to recover my pictures from the drive… Switched to 3TB myCloud… currently eying this 8TB drive to use as a secondary drive connected externally to USB port of the myCloud NAS to provide cheap capacity upgrade… don't know the performance implications…

    • Seagate is actually a SMR drive, this is not.

Shucked four of these to run in a XPenology NAS 3+ months ago. They've been running 24/7 for around 2500 hours and they've been rock solid so far.

    • Any shucking advice? Did you remove without breaking the case?

      • Used the 'card' trick as seen in the YouTube videos and took my time. Only really wanted to keep two cases… one to put a different drive into (extra hack required) and one in case of WD warranty claim. Managed to get two perfect but broke the tiny clips on the other two however even with broken clips the vases still fit and stay together fine. Take your time and all should be OK.

    • now I regret buying a new 4tb from futu! Are you running XPEnology in VMWare/HyperV or on metal? What is your pool setup, SHR? Did you enable TLER on the drives?

      • +1

I usually try to start out as 'default' as possible then make changes along the way only if required (my modding/hacking days are well over!) so I simply shucked the HDDs, threw them into an HP Workstation 'as is', installed Xpenology on bare metal then just let SHR do it's magic giving me 21.73TB of available storage all within about an hour. Drives seem to run quiet & cool and access speeds have been fine for my purposes so I haven't even looked into the actual R/W figures. I have a few backups of my NAS data so if I had to pull the drives out to enable TLER on each of them then that's fine I can do that later but they seem to be happy as as they are so I'm not going to bother at this stage. All my previous NAS machines have been setup in a similar way… no fiddling about, just slap it all in and go. I've never had a problem with any of them and I've probably built a good 30 x NAS boxes up over the years for myself, friends & family. Such a rock solid system!

  • Damn I paid ~$650 for the 16TB duo a couple of months ago
Would have got two of these!

  • Is encryption optional on these?

  • Wow. Even though the price is 20usd higher than its low point in May, because of the growth in value of the AUD over the USD this is only about $5 more expensive than it was then.

Also might suggest anyone getting one of these to use Divipay and save on the conversion fees

Seagate Expansion 8TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB8000100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HAPGEIE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WHkY… seems cheaper than this one: US$182.5/AU$230

    • Delivered yesterday - shucked and in my OWC Thunderbay already. Thanks O.P

      • Can you confirm what type/model of drive was inside. Such information would be very helpful in alleviating the guessing game.
