Ego 50cm Self Propelled Cordless Mower $1099 + $100 VISA Card @ Ego Power Plus (1/10)

50

One of the favoured brands of cordless mowers. Still quite pricey, but less maintenance and no fuel. They're having a $100 VISA voucher promo for the top self propelled models during October. They do have cheaper models (down to $649). Prices seem fixed everywhere (hello ACCC?) If you can't buy in store, shipping can be expensive. I found Allmowers.com.au the cheapest shipping of the places I've looked at.

I did find it here with a bonus trimmer, but it looks like a very weak entry level model trimmer. If you can buy in store and they still have the trimmer that would be the place to get it if you fancy that trimmer. Forget shipping from them - $700 plus to me!

Good review of the plastic $999 here (pretty well convinces me):

You might also consider the $799 Victa and $999 AEG (in the 56v and up range) at Bunnings (as well as the Bosch, Ryobi etc). Hard to find good reviews and comparisons as of course most people will only have had one.

Something interesting to note with the TradeTools packs… they don't specifically mention what battery comes in the Steel Deck pack but I assume it's a 7.5Ah. They also sell a Mower & Trimmer pack based on the plastic version of the Self-Propelled Mower for $100 less: https://www.tradetools.com/product-range/cordless-tools/indi… and that clearly states that it comes with a 7.5Ah battery so all good there.

I own the bog standard 'original' Ego Mower and the Trimmer plus a single 4Ah battery I use between them. I only have a small block (which is now mainly just dirt & dust due to no rain over Winter) but absolutely love the products and know they can easily do medium and possibly large yards too. One thing to consider with the above packs though is the battery size & weight! I'm pretty sure the Trimmer is only really supposed to be used with the 2.5Ah battery but it works perfectly fine with the 4Ah battery apart from the extra bulk & weight. The handle is adjustable so you can get the balance right when using the larger 4Ah battery but I really don't think it's design for a massive 7.5Ah battery as per the packs above. I'm sure it would physically fit but it might be so big & heavy it could make the Trimmer unusable so that may be something worth looking into before getting too excited as you may then need to budget for a smaller battery purely to run the 'bonus' Trimmer.

I saw elsewhere (possibly the Ego site) that this does include the battery and charger. Would it kill them to say so?

It seems the only difference between this and the $999 model is plastic vs steel body and 52 vs 50 cm and minor cut height differences.

  • i'm waiting on the self mowing version!

TBH the best thing about a cordless mower is the light weight. A steel deck seems to defeat that purpose. I'm surprised they didn't do an alloy version at this price.

My $250 plastic fantastic Bosch 34Li brushless has been brilliant for several years. It shows no signs of crapping out. I have modded it to run on 2× ryobi one+ packs, and sold the stock pack for $100. So $150 for 6 years of mowing vs $1000.

The thing with cordless mowers is that they are relatively new and in 5 years time the tech will mean you can upgrade to a way better mower for cheaper. Buying this expensive one locks you in.

Yeah, not sure why they went with a Steel Deck either. Odd.

I used a Commercial Grade Honda 4-Stroke for 10+ years when I lived in the 'burbs and it was excellent… even when cutting 250m2 of extremely thick & lush Buffalo once a week during the warm & wet QLD summers. It had a cast alloy deck which I know can suffer cracks or have chunks removed if mowing up rocks but yeah at least it wouldn't rust and was just as light as the flimsy steel deck. To be honest the plastic deck of the original Ego seems very strong so I'm not sure why they decided to release a Steel deck model. Maybe they just found people were scared of using a plastic mower? Dunno.

Maybe they just found people were scared of using a plastic mower? Dunno.

I think that's it. I, on the other hand, am man enough to pull it off.

      • if you google "ego mower broken deck" there are owners complaining about plastic deck getting cracked or broken. I did read somewhere durability of the plastic deck has improved since 1st generation of this mower. Personally it wouldn't worry me - may not be as strong as steel but I only have 3 smallish bits of grass to mow. And I once had a victa back in early 2000's where the deck rusted so badly the engine became lopsided … If you're buying for your lawn mowing business though I'd go for steel.

      Steel is an alloy.

      • Don't know why you were negged.

        You're right.

The manual states the weight is 24 or 27KG for the two models, that's almost as heavy as an internal combustion mower.

      • That's ridiculous. My Bosch is 16kg shipping weight, that includes batt and charger and packaging! No wonder they do these battleships in self propelled.

    • Yes, that’s the plastic body one which you’d go for unless you particularly fancied the steel.

  • Is the $100 voucher cashback across the range - or just the self-propelled model?
Base model for $549 would be attractive enough for me. (I'm kicking myself for not getting one in the Masters sale when they were less than $500.)

    • As supaderp said above looks like only the self propelled ones.

  • As these are self-driven, presumably the drive is through the rear wheels. Does that mean the rear wheels are on the same shaft, and locked together? Wouldn't that make it difficult to turn, or is there a differential or similar mechanism?

Also, it says it has LED headlights. I quite like the idea of being able to mow in the cool of the evening, but is it substantially quieter than a petrol mower?

    • +1

Yeah same shaft, there's no diff on these. I just turn release the lever and manually do the turns to reduce the load on the drive motor.
Yes it is very quiet. Go to a local shop that stocks it and they will turn it on for you.

  • Got the non propelled version of these - they are awesome. Plenty of cutting power. If you have a large lawn (over 300sqm2), plan on having some recharge time or a second battery ready to go (have a 4a and a 2.5, because i got a trimmer with it and they use the same batts)

  • Ah, I was so gonna get one, but just had to go to Bunnings and ended up getting the el Cheapo Ozito $149 corded and a 25 metre extension cord (which can easily reach all my 820m2 place). Once you get used to mowing back and forth and from left to right so you minimise the chance of running over the cord and for moving the cord, it's not bad! 1500 watts,, 360mm and extremely light. You can chuck it about anywhere. I had grass 500mm tall and thick and it was fine on it.

There's also a $189 1600 watt Ryobi. Might have got that, but they didn't have them. I figure if you're going to go for the cheap option might as well do it properly.

Also picked up a nice Ryobi padded harness for clipping a trimmer onto for about $45.
