  • This one at Super Cheap for $125.95 http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/SCA-Welding-Arc-Inv…

Wondering how to determine what is a good welder. Also are these ARC welders?

    • Yes it's an arc welder, no it won't be particularly good. Usable, but don't expect miracles - 15% duty cycle, really only suitable for light, occasional jobs like repairs etc.

    • Copper windings… or aluminium clad in copper… or just aluminium. Copper is better, heavier, and much more expensive.

      • At 4kg it seems unlikely to be a transformer-based welder.

  • Isn't a cordless screwdriver a drill?…..

    • No. 3.6v of power isn't enough to drill anything. It's a sub-category under drills in Bunnings though, but they typically don't have drill bits included.

Yea I just checked it out. It comes with a USB cable for charging… haha…

      • cheers, no doubt the Ozito one will halve in price next week then.

    • No. A cordless drill has a chuck so you can fit a range of drill bits etc whereas a cordless screwdriver has a 1/4" hex drive and usually runs much slower. Totally different beasts.

      Isn't a cordless screwdriver a drill?

In a way, yes. They both rotate and make holes on the wall.

Drill - high speed, low torque
Driver - low speed, high torque
Cordless drill - low speed, moderate torque
Girlfriend - high speed, endless talk

wife - low speed, no talk

Not negging the deal, but be aware of the duty cycle. 15% means you can weld for say 15secs and then need to wait 85 sec, it's simplification but the higher the duty cycle the more welding time you get. Welding at lower amps will increase the duty cycle. Don't waste town with the included mask, pay the $40 extra and get the Auto dimming one.

Oh and if you're keen you can buy a tig torch for these as well, just get bottle of argon and you can do scratch start tig. Great for learning and welding thin materials. Tig is also a much cleaner welding process.

    • 15% duty cycle is very low, but for your newbie welder who just wants to have a go, or even just have fun messing around, it will work.

In saying that, I'm in the messing around department but I got an old MonArc Iron Core arc welder, I'll take that any day. It will probably still be going in another 50 years :)

    • Yes, an auto dimming mask is a godsend when you're learning.

Best deal for argon is Bunnings .
$200 refundable deposit for a tiny D size bottle + $99 for gas,
or if using more than one bottle a year BOC do a deal for D size plus two refills for $108 rental per year
Same for argon+CO2 for mig welding

Course there's an even better deal if you can read between the lines
      for the
      Mega-Bargain

        1) So for the Bunnings deal there is no rental period? If it takes me 5yrs to use a bottle the charge is only $99 (assuming you take it back & get the $200 refunded). True?
        2) Maybe I am a bit slow because I am not seeing what is between the lines. Care to elaborate?

  • Any idea if the double adaptors are left hand and right hand?

    • +1

      Both
      Available in Left or Right

  • Can the cordless screwdriver have an extension bar attached?

  • Also the torque wrench is a killer bargain at $30.

    • only if it's accurate

      • Meh should be within acceptable tolerance. I mean most backyard people don't bother recalibrating their stuff anyway.

        • That's true, $30 is a cheap upgrade for people who don't usually torque their bolts. (p.s I didn't neg you)
