    • They usually have a fan only mode….

      • i tend to see more with just a less hot option , if someone could confirm ( these might be handy for summer :P )

        • +3

Well with some of the days we've had recently a heater may actually come handy in summer :s

        • I have one of the "combination" ones on the right and it has a fan only mode

    Hot deal!

    holy smokes that is cheap!
these things would have cost a fortune back in the 80s.

because it is an instore special i wonder if they would honour it at NSW branches. Perhaps if i kept a copy of the image and took it there?

    • +1

I can post a copy of the receipt if it helps?

    • The reason these fans a so cheap is because from today they have become illegal to sell in NSW, so Target need to dump them to consumers before they have to dump them in the bin.

      • Why are they illegal? Links to info?

          To Whom It May Concern:

Re: CHANGES TO SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR PLASTIC BODIED ROOM/FAN HEATERS

New South Wales Fair Trading is writing to you to inform you of the recent changes to the standard relating to room heaters (AS/NZS 60335.2.30:2009 – Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Particular requirements for room heaters).

Within the new standard are significant requirements for “fan heaters having an enclosure of substantially non-metallic material” (i.e. plastic bodied fan heaters). These additional requirements are considered necessary for safety reasons following a large number of fires throughout Australia caused by plastic bodied fan heaters.

The relevant standards committee introduced these changes into the standard with the view of significantly reducing the incident of fire in these declared electrical articles. These changes will come into effect on 29 October 2010.

New South Wales Fair Trading is requiring all current approval holders issued Certificates of Approval of these articles to provide evidence that the articles subject to current approval meet these new requirements. It is necessary to provide evidence of compliance by 29 October 2010 otherwise the approval issued by this office will be cancelled on that date in the interests of consumer safety.

All current approvals where proof of compliance is furnished will expire on the relevant dates.

Renewal will require testing to the new standard requirements.

I look forward to your urgent attention to this issue.

          Yours sincerely

Fire hazards waiting to happen in my mind, id avoid them personally, plus i bet they suck power. Good price however and worth the +V

    • They use no more power than any other type of small space heater.
Oil or ceramic they all use the same amount of electricity to heat the room to the same temprature

      • no these would use more since it has a fan spinning, but other wise yes in theory they would use similar amounts of energy to heat the room up to the same temp (depending on how thermal conductive the material the heater is made of is.

if you don't mind the noise. Really noisy

  • +3

what do you expect for $3.86 ?? you can only buy a buger in MC

  • +1

It's a bargain. But I wouldn't buy a fan heater without a ceramic element, which is self-limiting in terms of heat. Whereas with one of these, if the fan fails and the thermal cutout is dodgy, they can overheat and catch fire.

  • +1

We have one of these. The fan does not push much air so with the heater off it is not much use.

  • +3

Fan heaters are quite dangerous, don't know whether these el-cheapo heaters have any decent overheating protection.

They'd be good to have in a workshop or garage, but for the bedroom I suggest an oil heater since it's quieter and safer.

    Smokin'

    • +2

First it'd be smokin', then you'd be flaming, and next thing you'll know is you're crispy!

      • +2

Either way they'll work at warming up people!

        • LOL… Hot stuff

  • anyone thought of buying them and mailing them to folks in the southern states? ie. Melb? will have a look here but i doubt it'll be that price…

    • +6

to save postage costs, why don't you northerners just buy the lot of them, plug them in, turn them all on and just point them south?

then that will surely help us melbourners!

  • Wonder if my local store has any? I'll check it out tomorrow/today now :)

  • i'm so buying this and putting it in my office, its freezing cold there

    • If you have a local safety officer, you might have a problem doing that. As pointed out by scrimshaw above these fan heaters are really frowned upon by work safe.

  • perfect for camping! :D

I hope sydney stores have them too!

  • Cheap - but could be there hidden faulty? Beware!!

  • I wouldn't get one, they are likely to cost more than $3.86 an hour to run! Not to mention serious safety concerns.

    • unless ur saying it draws more that 4kWh, it won't suck more than $3.86/hr….
My fridge woyuld take 3 days to that….

  • +3

I heard that the purchase cost is subsidised by the power companies looking for 10% growth in power demand :)

  • Obviously those heaters did not sell well in the previous winter in Brisbane and it's not worth to keep the stock until next winter.

  • Good deal!
