HDD for NAS: Western Digital WD RED 3TB $135 4TB $188, Seagate IronWolf 4TB $167 Delivered @ eBay

200
PICK20UP

i have 5 bay synology NAS and as my 5x hdds (non nas drives) are now between 5-6 years old, maybe its time to get proper NAS hdds or at least spare just in case one is failing.
i only need 4 good hdd (1 in my nas is for torrenting purposes dont care about data loss).

use code pick20up from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/333311

few choices here, probably few $ more expensive than ozb record lowest ever, but not bad.

winner here is the seagate 4TB but for me four of 3TBs (equal to 9TB space after synology SHR/RAID) is enough.
the more space you have the more junk you will put into.

  • Good price for WD red 3TB. Thanks OP.

    • +1

for reference i bought my 3tb WD GREEN for $179, exactly 5 years and 4 months ago

      • The prices of drives has virtually remained stationary over recent years.

For instance the 3TB Red was US$110 in 2014, and is currently …. US$109.95.

If it had followed the progression we saw before, the 6TB Red would now be US$110 rather than US$217 - all due to the consolidation and lack of competition in the market.

PS the 3TB Green were ~AU$120 5 years ago, I know since I bought them for my NAS. And for the OP, look at Toshiba X300 6TB drives (US$169), which is where I'd be if buying today (N300 haven't dropped enough yet).

        • so your saying I should go into business manufacturing HDs?

  • the more space you have the more junk you will put into.

    Hey! My 24TB isn't junk!

    • alright i was meaning "the more space i have the more junk i will put into."

      • Go go data hoarder!! Wohooo

        I need 8TB one

  • Been hoping the Amazon price would drop back to previous pricing levels https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321221 but based on the current Amazon price, futu has a decent price for the 4Tb Red.

  • Can someone recommend a good compact NAS for these drives?

    • synology ftw either 2 or 5 bay depending on $$$

  • Thanks, don't forget cash rewards. Popped on 4x wd red 3tb. Right price point for me. Glad my large store of family photos will have raid backup now (to compliment off sites backup)

    • I assumed you have a nas already? 4 bays? And what will happen with the existing hdds?

      • Yeah an old hp proliant n40l old drives I'll grandfather, one will be put on the shelf other two in external cases.

Unfortunately that one only does raid 0 or 1 at hard ware but hear can do software for raid5 but need to pop more ram in. Unsure. Might upgrade server at some point soon.
