  • Their logistics isn't ready yet. Last I've read was that they managed to open a warehouse in Pellicano M2 Industry Park in Melbourne.

But without their fleet of trucks and other additional warehouses we might not have Amazon Prime services just yet, and probably a very limited inventory of things to choose from.

I read that Amazon making their warehouse in Dandenong, Vic and I read a news article it said it can launch before Christmas.

    • How do you know that? They've been preparing for months and they are in total media blackout. They leased the old Bunnings distribution warehouse and started filling it many months ago. There used to be heaps of Amazon jobs advertised on seek, but those look to have slowed down, so it looks like many positions are fulfilled.

  • Ive also read somewhere they're pushing for christmas but thats a huge task i could imagine.

    • Yeah, but if anyone can pull this it is Amazon only.

      • +5

Surely they could just order a fleet of trucks from Amazon?

        • Sorry Amazon don't sell trucks :(

        • +7

Sorry, that item does not ship to your location.

        • @EightImmortals:

Free shipping of trucks upon purchases of more than $100

I cannot help feeling that a lot of people are expecting too much from the Amazon offering and are in for a big disappointment

    • I was proved wrong when it launched in India. They offer lot of deals there during it launch time, I hope here also it will offer something similar

Amazon Australia will give Australian retail the kick up the bum it needs!

  • +2

I hope amazon sell in Australia very quick for Xmas. Cheap sales for present daily. And eBay have to have more sales too

  • You’d imagine that if Amazon were going to do something before the holiday season this year they’d really need to get their skates on. Considering that customers are going to get cheesed off if their orders aren’t processed if they’re Christmas pressies, and you’d also think that Amazon would at least have been doing some limited viral marketing to promote a late year launch? I kinda feel like they’re not going to do much, but I could be wrong.

  • Got a new payment nuisance today, instead of the "Sorry, this item does not ship to your location" I got "We were unable to process your purchase with your current payment information. Your payment method must be issued by a bank local to the Amazon.com marketplace"

Tried to use my VISA card that I've used plenty of times before. Bloody useless.

      Friday November 24th. 9am.

I also predict Ebay will have a percentage off fit on the same day, thus ozbargian will see the most traffic in it's entire history.

  • News sources have noted that more of amazon.com's stock now "ships to Australia" with "FREE SHIPPING".

We might find that for those companies that have tried to protect overcharging in Australia, Amazon is doing an end run around them and selling from the US to force them to play fair and cut their overpricing.

The examples they found have discounts of 50%+ on the HN/JBHiFi prices.

Timescales for delivery are from this Friday, which could be indicative…

It is a joke, I mean, really, this one part…
"What’s not clear is whether these are still US prices or Australian pricing as Amazon clearly states Shipping To Australia"

It is very clear to me that he is looking at his "David's Amazon.com" page THAT IS IN USD.
Taking one of the items listed - the Sonos 5 - listed as $499 in USD on Amazon.com and on HN for $745, on today's exchange rate @ xe.com of 1 USD = 1.32201 AUD (or 1 AUD = 0.756425 USD) the $499 is ~$660AUD. Then add GST = ~$726AUD, then add shipping.
Just because is says it ships to Australia does not mean it is free shipping to Australia.
When I look it gives me (in USD) "Price: $499.00 + $65.84 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia" so you can add another ~$87AUD for shipping for total of ~$812AUD.
Since the author can't be bothered to do proper reporting then I won't bother checking any of the others.

In the authors blurb at the bottom it states "David Richards has been writing about technology for more than 30 years."…..writing but not comprehending what he is "reporting" on????

Google "Dave Richards Media Watch" to learn more about some of his more "interesting" journalistic endeavors.

There is a reason the Media Watch TV show named a parody award after him. It is actually pretty funny.

Amazon to launch this week in time for Black Friday “soft launch” of the site on Thursday, followed by an official launch on Friday"

  • +2

Email which was sent to sellers confirming a soft launch on the 23rd of Nov

  • +1

So, nothing from Amazon confirming a Friday launch? Just the beginning of a 'testing phase' starting this Thursday?

  • Does anyone know if the Amazon tablets etc will be available on the launch? I'm holding off to buy a Fire 8 Kids tablets from the US just in case but don't want to miss the US sale by waiting 🤔

    • I think these are first thing they will try to sell.

  • +4

I received 6 test parcels from Amazon Australia today as I'm a nominated household for their delivery testing. Each box contained a 2 bars of soap. With another 44 parcels that I'm due to receive in the coming week, stay tuned for Ozbargain's deal of the year on soap!

    • +1

Did you have a method to track their delivery?

      • +1

5 were Aussie Post with tracking via email, the other some random unidentifiable courier that dumped the parcel on the doorstep.

    • +2

All soap bars must be Unbranded

  • How to join Amazon Oz as a Seller? is it too late ?

    • Yea, I'm wondering about this too. I found the sign up form page but that's about it. Who are selling the stuff? Amazon themselves?

      • That will add to the waiting list for call back from Amazon which never happens. Did that 1 month ago.

  • Black friday australian time for sure.

In a shocking development, two of Amazon's biggest potential rivals (eBay and Gerry Harvey) have tried to pour cold water on the launch.

The article features some brilliant insight from Gerry Harvey:

Mr Harvey said he was “a bit flabbergasted” as to why Amazon would launch just before Christmas, when “most people don’t want to buy online because they’re scared” they won’t receive the items in time.

Yes, makes no sense to me either Gerry. No idea why they would want to launch before Christmas.

    • +2

its also why he shuts down his online store during this time right?

    • +1

Amazon Delivery is quite bang on , so I don't think so shipping will be problem.

    • +1

Ah Gerry, the ever-knowledgeable fat cat.

  • Merged from What Happened to Amazon Australia?

Wasn't it supposed to launch today on black friday ?

    • +1

From what i'm seeing, it was a soft launch for a specific few testers. The real launch should happen next week iirc

      • +4

LOL the launch is so soft that no one can see or hear it.

    • +6

Gerry blew up their servers with dynamite.

    • +4

Big fat fake news. By now most people have probably bought their Xboxes, Playstations and Blu Rays and Dvds already. Blunt move from amazon to miss the big sale today.

    • +1

Amazon will crash and burn in Australia the same way they did in china.

      • To be honest, I am not keen on seeing their humiliating modern slavery work culture invade this beautiful country at all. Everyone who ever worked for them will agree. For me ebgames and other retailers here were the real winners of today. Just look at the great bundles they offered.

  • Don't know if this hints at an earlier launch date, however when searching for Amazon AU on Google, this is now showing up. Previously it was just 'Kindle & eBooks' in the short description iirc.
